El Goonish Shive tells the story and deep interpersonal relationships of a group of friends in the fiction town of Moperville. It deals with some pretty serious issues like Gender Identity, Hetero/Bi/& homosexual relationships, self-discovery and more. And I did mention that there's MAGIC? Mind = Yep! There's magic, shape-shifting, space aliens, evil (or at least questionable) otherworldly beings, and the most gender-bending you've (probably) seen this side of Ranma 1/2 (maybe more!). Recently discovered it and almost completely binged this entire webcomic, similarly how I did with Questionable Content a while back. It's an awesome mix of fantasy, sci-fi, slice-of-life, romance, and comedy. It gave me some strong feels at times, and slice-of-life stuff tends to mess me up, but your mileage may vary. If you decide to give it a try, I'd recommend either: - Start around the 400-450 mark, when the art noticeably improves (and continues to due so overtime). (This recommendation starts you at #437, with the chapter Painted Black.) OR - Read from the start, and manage through it. If you decide to start later in, be sure to read a recap of what you missed. The story starts off seemingly nonsensical, but the creator, Dan Shive, manages to pull it all together and spin it into an intriguing and interesting story. It's sitting at ~2400 (the comic started in 2002!) pages at the moment, and in addition to that, there's another ~700 pages of sometimes canon, sometimes non-canon extra strips called EGS:NP. |
