Temple of Kraden News: Welcome to the Temple of Kraden! ------ All worshipers may enter the Most Holy Place in single file, reflecting on the bountiful blessing Kraden hath provided unto him or herself since their last visit. Head coverings are not necessary, as true penitence and humility are found within. The Priests and Priestesses of Kraden endeavor to remind all that fresh orange juice is heavily preferred; only whores use frozen.
Greetings, heathen. Perhaps some fortuitous blessing of Kraden's grace hath led you to our humble Temple, or perhaps you are simply curious about this strange and wonderful cult. Should you be willing - and dare to hope - to achieve enlightenment, the door opens before you. Lo! Leave your old life behind! For once you step through, you become something more than just yourself.

You become a Kradenette.

Are you willing to make the rapturous plunge? Do you have what it takes?

One of my students is a big metalhead, along with his brother, and asked me for a big list of all my recommendations. I was going to write it myself, but I think it's also a good idea for a topic here - the curious can check out new bands, and you all can catch the ones I missed. B)

Let's sort by subgenre, perhaps? If you don't know the subgenre just post them anyway

Classic metal
- Iron Maiden
- Black Sabbath
- Dio

Melodeth
- Dark Tranquility
- Children of Bodom
- Wintersun (are they melodeth???)
- Amon Amarth (are they??? I'm not a huge fan but my student would like them)
- In Flames (Gnarly)
- Soilwork (Gnarly)

Symphonic metal
- Epica
- Nightwish
- Rhapsody
- Blind Guardian??
- Symphony X

Progressive metal
- Dream Theater
- Ayreon
- Arcturus (technically avant-garde yes but)
- Devin Townsend Project
- Meshuggah (LOL don't want to bother making a Djent category)
- Protest the Hero
- Tool
- Amorphis (Slime)
- Between the Buried and Me (Slime)

Folk metal
- Equilibrium
- Eluveitie
- Ensiferum
- Finntroll
- Korpiklaani (Slime)
- Tyr (Slime)

Jazz metal
- Diablo Swing Project
- Cynic
- Gordian Knot
- Spiral Architect (idk to put them here or prog)

Death metal
- Death
- Obscura
- Nile
- Opeth
- Into Eternity
- Augury
- Atheist
- Necrophagist
- Quo Vadis

Black metal
- Ulver
- Emperor
- Borknagar
- Agalloch?
- Chthonic

Trance metal
- Blood Stain Child (Japanese)

Touhou metal (because yes)
- Demetori
- Kissing the Mirror (Slime)

Japanese metal
- Girugamesh (Slime)

Also for me but if anyone knows more trance metal, give me pls

Also I'd like more Japanese bands on there but somehow my knowledge of Japanese metal is p limited <_< >_>

Also my top picks personally:
- Ayreon
- Arcturus
- Obscura
- Opeth
- Epica
- Cynic
- Ulver

My servants never die

wrong, Eluveitie should be on your top picks :p

Korpiklaani and Tyr for more folk metal

as for Japanese metal

what about Girugamesh?

Kissing the Mirror is more touhou stuff
Amorphis is a pretty glaring hole too

Posting a melodeath category and not including one of the fathers of the subgenre, In Flames? Get outta here.

But seriously, throw them on the list. Throw Soilwork in there as well.

Add "Between the Buried and Me" for progressive metal

Oh yeah, I left out In Flames since my student already likes them, but yeah there's them too.

Not a massive Amorphis fan but acceptable B)

kek I looked at BtBaM on my iPod and totally forgot to add it

Added stuff!

Seconding Gnarly with In Flames (edit: ninja'd but I'm going to keep talking). Although maybe only their 90's and early-00's stuff? Only shitlords and Asphodel like their new material. :3

Here's some more melodeath for you:

At the Gates
Disarmonia Mundi
Eternal Lies
Novembre

Also toss Sacrilege his way. Super-underrated 90's melodic death featuring In Flames's former drummer on vocals and percussion. So amazing. And because they share a band name with some other UK metal band, their only two albums are titled Lost in the Beauty You Slay and The Fifth Season, if that helps at all. They also went by Sacrilege GBG in order to differentiate themselves from the UK group.

Agalloch is a must, yeah. Easily one of my favorites, though hard to categorize. Get that question mark out of there!

Anata is great and creative technical metal. I'd add that to the list for sure. I mean, how could you not.

Grievance is good symphonic/black/idk. Their only album is The Phantom Novels.

Myrkur is a female-fronted black metal project that I'd also recommend. Amaaaazing vocals.

Wolves in the Throne Room is also excellent black metal, though their approach to the genre is very different from, say, Emperor. They also do ambient work; their latest album was an ambient reinterpretation of the album that came before.

The Agalloch question mark was for genre placement but yeah they're definitely a keeper
At the Gates is frostbitten as [radio edit], so definitely a good choice

I actually don't know the rest of the stuff you listed so =OOOOO score

I'll put mostly larger name bands to add as it would get cluttered otherwise.

Classic: Testament and Judas Priest.

Melodeath: Soilwork, Scar Symmetry, Mors Principium Est. (Probably my favorite genre and I could list a ton here..)

Prog: Ne Obliviscaris, Byzantine (I know they are more basic heavy metal and thrash but don't tell me they are not, you lie), Disperse, and Being.

Death: Septic Flesh (could be in symphonic as well), The Faceless, Inferi, Carcass.

It's tough to do an overall favorites as it would still be a long list, but some that are almost immortalized there are:

Soilwork
Scar Symmetry
Septic Flesh
Byzantine
Testament
The Faceless
Necrophagist

I'll put in my recommendation on Animals As Leaders. Instrumental progressive metal (yes, put it in progressive).

Actually that crucification thing is kinda lame... But I've never really been big into the whole sacreligous imagery (or lyrical content) of metal and how it is viewed as "cool."

damn, I was gonna say Babymetal.

I think Wintersun is more power metal? I remember hearing them way back when I was first getting into metal, they were touted as the power metal band that would act as a gateway drug to harsh vocals. I tried them. Didn't work.

All I've really got is power metal.

Blind Guardian is pretty classic, and if this kid is a fantasy/LotR nerd, he'd love them even more.

Gamma Ray and Helloween are also pretty solid classic, though I prefer the former.

Within Temptation I've gotten some solid enjoyment out of, and they have a female vocalist, which is always a plus for metal.

And, of course, Kamelot, if you're going to include Epica. :awe:

Also I'd make sure to specify that it's Rhapsody of Fire now.

I know iím making dead posting, but the 2018 for me is a great metal year:
-January-> Obituary
-Febraury->Cannibal Corpse
-March->Evanescence
-April-> Dark Tranquility and Oceans ate alaska
-May-> None
-June-> Iron maiden/Helloween/Jonathan Davis/Shinedown
Summer
-September->Some festivals
-October->Bullet for my valentine/Of mice and men and Attila
-November-> TESSERACT (most hyped show for me), BTBAM, Slayer, Anthrax, Lamb of God, Obituary
-December-> Nightwish
This year is really full of good band, and i had (or i will have) the great opportunity to listen them live all nearly Milan or in North Italy

So Babymetal is really the extent of my metal knowledge but a coworker and I listened to Tengger Cavalry a while back at the office and I don't see that in this topic. Mongolian folk metal:
