Eh, 13 had a fine ost and I'm glad they ventured beyond having Uematsu do all their soundtracks but 8 has some great songs in it, definitely its strong point. Characterization was its weakest point IMO, especially with that reveal relating to everyone's back story. The general idea of the battle system was neat and I liked that status ailments were actually a thing that was useful but holy shit they made them too useful.
Tbh I think FF7 resonates with me more now than it did when I was younger, but it's the opposite case with FF6(used to be my favourite). Both games were pretty damn groundbreaking for their time though, and I think they deserve respect for that, even if games have since developed much more complexity overall. |

The Junction system killed the game the most. It wasn't necessarily a terrible idea, but they dropped the ball when actually making it. When you can have max stats at the end of disc 1 (plus Squall's Lionheart weapon), you know something went terribly wrong. Oh, and Triple Triad was pretty fun. Although Triple Triad is part of the reason why you can have max stats and the Lionheart at the end of disc 1. |

Yeah, I definitely agree. ^_^ I can't speak to FF8's gameplay or music much, since it's the only one I haven't really played. I started to, but the Junction system made me too neurotic - I sat like for ten minutes at the tutorial battle drawing spells because WHAT IF I NEED THEM LATER?? |

THIS. I would've been so okay with FF8 if it weren't for the junctioning. Magic was effectively useless, because it's always a better decision to get 100 spells and allocate them to stats than try to use the magic itself. It's more frustrating because I never learned that you can convert cards into spells, and that you're supposed to use a summon skill to convert enemies into cards so you don't gain EXP, because enemies levels scale relative to your own, so the final boss is WAY harder if you're higher level than if you're lower level. The system was horrifically obtuse, and unless you knew about the cards converted to spells mechanic, you had to spend an hour every fight drawing 100 spells for each character, roughly 5 spells per turn. It was slow and incomprehensible, and I have such negative feelings based on the first play that I can't ever work up the nerve to play it again. |

The final boss scaling to your level doesn't make much of a difference due to a couple of very broken mechanics that you can abuse. Mainly the Aura status, allowing you to continuously spam Limits and end the battle in a matter of minutes. There's also a card you can turn into 10 Holy War items, which if I remember correctly, makes your entire team invincible. I believe it's also possible to gain more than one of that card, so you could get 100 Holy Wars if you wanted and never have to worry about the final boss being able to kill you. If you really want to be as cheesy as can be, you can do both. Cast Aura on your team and then use a Holy War. Then you'll get to spam Limits while being invincible. |
