Well, there is still a little advantage to choosing wisely. Though not necessarily what you were talking about, certain characters are better for certain jobs. I've read that Vaan is apparently the best White Mage in the game for example, so there's still some importance in choosing jobs wisely if you're trying to min/max for Yiazmat. |

I hope they make an NX version. I've played the other Ivalice Alliance games (well, not War of the Lions, but I'm going to get that on my iPhone soon…) because they're Nintendo games. Can't justify shilling out for a PS4, even though I really want to try my hand at the biggest and best of the Ivalice games (not to mention FF7 HD and FFXV). I'm really hoping Cloud in Smash means Square Enix finally wants to play nice with Nintendo consoles again. |

Although I don't think FFXII is great, it's actually impossible for it to be the worst FF games when the XIII trilogy exists. |

It means that I actually beat the game rather than get "pretty far" like I have in the other main series FFs. :'D though if I include spinoffs, all three tactics win for me. lf>new fftactics |

FFXIII is better than FF1-6 (maybe not 3 I haven't played it yet, and idk about 8 but I trust Silvy so he's right). Come at me |

but I ragequit XIII because of the stagger system and I'm pretty sure there's no way the villains in XIII win like Kefka does. |

Stagger system is fine! I also like how quickly you can change strategies/the paradigm system, it makes combat feel pretty fluid. And the fights are pretty cinematic/action-y as well, it looks and feels a lot more dynamic. Well Kefka 'winning' doesn't make it good, and Kefka's a pretty awful character in general I will say the aftermath of that is the best part of VI, even if it's basically the 'gather all your party members again like Pokemon' and then FFXIII-2 gives you the real Pokemon experience with all that cute/cool monster collecting, dreaming of that dank chocobo swag <insert crazy chocobo here> In a sense you spend most of FFXIII fighting for the bad guys but whether the bad guys win or lose or you fight for the bad guys has nothing to do with quality of writing |

...I think I just realized I don't know how to discern "quality of writing". I typically just notice plot events I think are nice/cool/awesome. And entertaining characters. |

FFVI is one of my favorite games of all time, but like yeah there's not a single character (player or otherwise) that I would consider exceptionally well written. Not even close. I just peg it as a product of the times and the limitations of the hardware, whether or not that's actually true. Actually I feel that way about basically all of the NES-SNES era titles. Still love the damn things though. |

Yeah, for the time it was pretty well-advanced and broke a lot of new ground in terms of the kinds of stories games can tell. But because of that groundwork, and the continuing work that was laid, storytelling in games generally improved over time as it became considered more of a 'serious' or commercially viable method of storytelling. That's what I think as a general trend, anyway, but ofc there are still some older games with a great story/writing, and there are lots of newer games that have bad writing. Plot events being nice/cool/awesome is definitely an important part of art and how we experience it, and I think that's also definitely valid - and indeed, a part of what makes something 'good writing.' I think another thing is what we appreciate at different times and different experiences - lol randumb Kefka humour "son of a submariner"??? might be funny and good when we're young, but I think one of the ways you can tell if something's good is that you can keep appreciating it no matter how old you get, no matter how much other stuff you've experienced and your tastes have changed, there's something in it that still says "Yes, this resonates with me." Buuut that's just me, obviously there's no definitive answer to that |

At least VIII has a good OST though. Sure, it might be the only good thing about the game, but that's still one more than XIII has. |

Too bad XIII's OST is one of the best in the series, and is better than the OST's Uematsu composed ~_^ Except maybe FFIX |
