Ha, and I'm in the middle of replaying FFXII now... I'm really glad this is finally happening, anyway. I've always wanted to play the IZJS version. It sounds so good.
there's an english patch for the rom version of the game =p

I will not tolerate Vaan hate.

I will agree that Penelo is mediocre.

Also, this is good news. One of the better FFs, I think. But wake me up when this gets ported to PC, please.

I shall support this.
Also just realized they're changing the license board... I actually liked the sheer open-endedness of that with the ability to use the characters in any way I wanted.

The license board was such a cluster[radio edit] but I guess I appreciate the effort

but yeah the OST is fantastic, so I'm glad they're still leaving the original in. Very Holst.

Seconded.

I thought 12 was average at best, and one of my least favorite FF games. The characters were (mostly) bland, the sheer cheapness of some enemies was ridiculous, and boss battles were unnecessarily long and suffered from HP inflation/artificial difficulty. I didn't like the random chest contents, especially having to run through the Necrohalls 8 times to get the damn spear.

Maybe the IZJS version was better/fixed some of the issues. Maybe I was just bad at the game. Either way, Yiazmat can go eat a dick. [radio edit] that guy.

One chocolate bunny is enough, even if she's basically Chewbacca

I don't mind Vaan/Penelo, they're bland and don't add anything but they're basically the Everyman characters to self-insert onto, so it's easy to just ignore them.

Yiazmat suffers the same problem that Penance did in FFX -- it's a boring, repetitive fight that has very few ways you can approach it and be successful. Square Enix loves to add these "superbosses" to games and then only have a couple of viable ways to defeat them.

Though at least Yiazmat has a few more viable strategies to use against it than Penance does. Penance is either use Yojimbo or spend 50 or so hours min/maxing your stats.

I found Yiazmat more fun to fight personally.

Are you implying I'm not gladly spending 50 hours grinding for superbosses?

I like grinding exp and getting rare weapons for superbosses, both in X and XII.

It's not the exp grinding or weapon making that's the problem with FFX. It's the 30-50+ hours of repeatedly doing the same Arena fights for Spheres so that you can clear out your sphere grid and refill all of it with better stat spheres. You have to fight each of the Arena bosses hundreds of times to get all the spheres you need to min/max each character.

Yiazmat isn't as bad because he doesn't require as much prep work. Getting to level 99 and getting gear good enough to fight him doesn't take all that long. The fight itself is what's long, whittling that 50,000,000+ HP down 9,999 damage at a time takes quite a long time. Which is why I'm glad the International version included being able to break the damage limit. It'll make fighting Yiazmat less of a bore.

I enjoy grinding too, but not when it's as repetitive as that was. FFX was one of the most boring Platinums I've done.

Ah right true true.

lol yeah 2 hours Yiazmat was considered fast. Which I again, personally, was ok with. A 2 hour long fight in a video game is a lost art. When reaaally long boss fights come along it gets noticed. Yiazmat in FFXII, The End (first time) in MGS3 etc.

But yeah long fights, even at the hours marks, I'm ok with. I totally get why people aren't. But I like the feeling afterwards. Post orgasmic glow kind of thing. Like [radio edit] yeah I've grinded my ass off to even get here I'm countning on the fight of my life.

I want to sweat. When was the last time you got sweaty from a boss fight.

as someone who's been playing the IJZS version, it's freaking great.

12 class-based license boards to split between six characters is pretty nice. ALSO MORE GAMBITS EARLIER. Gambits are the reason I love FFXII's battle system.

They did that for the music in FFX which I greatly appreciated. Usually I can't stand when music is remixed, though sometimes they do manage to improve upon the original (the final battle with Seymour comes to mind).
See, I agree with this to an extent, then I take a look at Challenge, which was my freakin' jam in FFX itself, but then we had the version in the remaster which was awful and had none of what made the original good at all. Having the option to swap's definitely a good thing in this case, I'd say.

That aside, super hyped to get to play with IZJS.

Also Vaan's basically just the window through which we watch Basch be the main character, he's harmless.

I still liked the license board and openness to have your characters be whatever you wanted them to be. They all could cover in various areas.

Also I never used Gambits. I preferred to micromanage.

Agreed. Designing your own custom AI scripts is freakin' sweet. The fact you can change and reprioritise them even mid-battle to suit the situation just makes them that more convenient.

I always considered Ashe to be the true main character tbh.

I consider Ashe to be the main character as well. Though I might be a little biased since she's the only character I liked and was the one I controlled when possible.

I'm on the side that is happy about the job classes. One thing I didn't like about XII (same with X) is that everyone could do everything. There was no variety between characters when it came to battle styles, aside from the very early goings of the game.

Regardless of whether you think the main character was Basch, Ashe, or Balthier, I think we can all agree it's not Vaan.

I was always a fan of the Gambit system. I thought it took a lot of planning and strategy to come up with a good system that allows your units to prioritize actions based on the way the fight was designed. If I have any complaint, it's that I didn't need to use the Gambits often enough. You could breeze through most of the game with the same setup on each unit. Hopefully the new version can alter that a bit.

Also, I agree with Dragon Lord. The problem with letting all characters be able to do everything is that you wind up lacking in variety. You want everyone to wield the Zodiac Spear if you can help it, because it is, bar none, the best weapon, and everyone can wield it. Everyone can perform the same spells or attack techniques, and there's no real reason to use someone with lower stats like Fran. I think the class system opens up more variety, and can carve out a better niche for each unit so you don't spend the entire game just using the same three party members that all do the same exact thing.
