That's right you heard me there is a rumor that Nintendo is working on the next generation of handheld codename the MH. So what is your thoughts on this? |

*shrug* It's about as expected as the sun rising in the east tomorrow. Not really something that can be considered merely a rumour. We know it's going to happen. Give me GBA virtual console and more third party support (seriously, I don't care about Zelda, Mario, Kirby, Star Fox or Metroid, and even Pokémon's getting boring for me) and I'll be happy. |

NX was confirmed for a brief presentation at E3. Brief as in new Zelda only. Give me an actual controller. You know, one with analog sticks and four face buttons? No more gimmicks please Nintendo. I know that's your thing but look how the Wii U sold. |

personally i want USB KB/M support but a non-gimmick controller would be fine (gamepad is too heavy for extended play even if it doesn't weigh much for short play sessions) |

This thread isn't about the NX apparently, though. |

MH handheld is a guess by Mitsubishi-Morgan Stanley. They quickly came out and said that there is no confirmation of such a handheld, and the MH stands for "Mobile Handheld" placeholder until they come out with a real name. The guess is pretty solid, given that every Nintendo console has had a hand-held relative NES and G&W, SNES and GB, N64 and GBC, NGC and GBA, Wii and DS, Wii U and 3DS. But until Nintendo announces anything, this is just one investor's speculation. Of course, all of this speculation would fall apart if the NX is both a console and a handheld, or if Nintendo decides to go full-in on Android/iOS apps as their next mobile platform focus. |

Sure, but on the other hand, look how the Wii sold. Granted, the Wiimote functioned pretty well as a regular controller, too, in addition to its motion capabilities. The Wii U gamepad was great as a gamepad, but annoying as a controller. |

Agreed with no gimmicks. Stop with the gimmicks for the love of God, Nintendo. |

I don't mind the gimmicks so long as they're kept in check. They should be side-shows, not the main focus. Everybody loved duck hunt with that silly old gun, or the mouse thing with Mario paint, but those were extras, not the main controllers for the system. Nintendo's great at trying new things, but they'll fall flat on their face again if they keep making one or two gimmicks the standard for the entire system. Also, the Wii-U Pro controller sucks. Even if it's got all the right inputs, it has bad spacing and feel. They should just update the GC controller. It was a little weird, but it was unique, functional, and compact while still maintaining the proper kinds of inputs. |

At this point "Gimmicks" will probably always be a primary part of a new Nintendo platform's early promotion even if it's ultimately not their focus for the rest of the system's lifetime. Aside from Game Boy, all of their largest successes were built on the back of an early gimmick (Zapper for NES in North America, and to a lesser degree ROB though that was more for the sake of getting carried in retail stores than for actual sales. Dual Screens and "casual" software like Brain Age for the DS. Motion Control and associated peripherals, followed by Wii Fit for the Wii.) Now if only we could get Sunsoft to once again embrace Gimmick! |

Although I think this cycle's gimmicks fell flat (gamepad controller and 3D visuals), the last cycle's were excellent. The motion controller was a bit hit or miss, to be fair, but it could function well as a normal controller (albeit one with an unusual shape). The dual screen/touch screen of the DS was such a fantastic addition, though, because almost any game can make good use of that, even if just for a menu/HUD. The gamepad's flaw is that, while it added a great optional element that could be of great use as a second screen, or as a portable console screen, it sacrificed itself as a controller in doing so. Contrast with the Wiimote, which could still be used as a regular controller with ease. Where I think they could take that, though, is by having stronger console/handheld interactivity. They began this with the 3DS being usable as a controller for Smash (possibly with other games), but imagine being able to use the handheld to continue playing console games using its own screen - but still being comfortable to hold. Or having the ability to play with the handheld, using its screen as a second screen, in the vein of what the gamepad offered. I think that'd be an interesting direction to take, since it allows for extra functionality when used together, but can still operate in a traditional, comfortable sense when separate. |

I recall a few games during the Gamecube/GBA SP era doing this. It worked really well for Four Swords and Crystal Chronicles, I was surprised more games didn't give it a shot. |

they didn't because a 4 player setup for those GC games was expensive as hell with wireless connections being a thing though if each player had a 3DS already a game like those would work on wii u |
