personally i think it's terrible when they're done like smash for example i see it less as an incentive for continued play and more like tedious grinding, especially if it matters to gameplay only time i'm ok with it is if it's only costumes for chars |

I like it a lot, or at least I used to, but it's more a product of nostalgia and of a time period where such things were the norm and less because it's actually a good thing to have. In the case of Smash, I like it well enough most of the time for music, mii fighter costumes and other trivial things...but some of the challenges can be absurd to the point where it's not worth me trying. |

Extremely unlock-heavy. As in, every single thing in the game is unlockable, and you'll still be consistently unlocking things hundreds of hours in. First is Legend mode, which is 32 stages in total, each with one heart piece, one heart container, one normal Gold Skulltula and a second Hard Gold Skulltula unlocked after clearing Legend mode once. 15 of the 24 playable characters are unlocked via Legend mode. A few second tier weapons are also unlocked here. Then there's Adventure Mode. This is the meat of the game, and where the majority of unlocking occurs. To start with, you'll only have one map available; the other 9 playable characters are located here, some of them further into the map than others. Along the way you unlock the first tiers of every weapon in the game, as well as a handful of alternate costumes. My Fairy is also unlocked here, and you unlock new outfits and Food along the way. There are also 20 Gold Skulltulas to find here, and many, many, many heart pieces and heart containers for every character. Once you defeat the 'final boss' of the first Adventure Map, the Great Sea Map unlocks. Here you unlock the second tier of every weapon you don't unlock the second tier of in Legend, as well as a new costume for every character. There are another 20 Gold Skulltulas here as well, plus tons of new My Fairy clothes and food, and heart pieces/containers. After beating the 'final boss' of the Great Sea Map, the Master Quest Map unlocks, which has the third tier of every weapon in the game, plus several costumes for a variety of characters, and yet another 20 Gold Skulltulas, and again, My Fairy costumes and food plus heart pieces/containers. Finally, after beating the Master Quest Map, both the Twilight and Termina Maps unlock, with fourth tier weapons spread across both maps. Each map also has a wide variety of costumes to unlock, and another 20 Gold Skulltulas each and each with even more My Fairy costumes/food and heart pieces/containers. Each Adventure Map is huge as well, and can each easily last upwards of 40 hours. It's an extremely lengthy game, and you will consistently be unlocking new things all throughout the 200+ hours you can spend on it. Of course, there's a trade-off there. On the one hand, it takes an incredibly long time to see everything the game has to offer. But on the other hand, there's a constant feeling of progression from start to finish; there's always a reason to keep going. |

Honestly, if it wasn't me being motivated to find and discover unlocks, Hyrule Warriors would lack a lot of its charm. I MUCH prefer the character's level 2 and 3 weapons being hidden on Adventure Maps than giving all three from the get-go like with most of the Season 1 DLC (and with all the Season 2 DLC for Wii U). Also, Hyrule Warriors Legends having most level 2 weapons hidden on the Great Sea Adventure Map, and all level 3 weapons hidden on the Master Quest Adventure Map, makes for a much more tactical path through the game. I've mostly completed the 1st Quest Adventure Map and the Legend Mode on Easy. I'm working through it on Normal, but have tried a few levels on Hard, and it's quite difficult without the Level 3 weapons I had unlocked on the Wii U version by the time I tried Hard Mode. I even tried the first stage on Hero Mode and just barely won it using the skill-sealed (and thus weaker version of the) Master Sword with Link. This game runs on unlocking stuff. I am very pleased by this. I understand the "JUST LET ME PLAY AS THE CHARACTER I WANT", but I agree with Obsidian – I don't think I'd be sinking hundreds of hours into it just to see the characters in different cool costumes with different weapons if those were all there from the get-go. |

I don't mind a game having a ton of things to unlock as long as it's stuff like costumes, accessories, and other things that have no effect on the game play. I actually really enjoy games that have a lot of these to unlock. It gives me something more to do and I just find grinding them all out to be fun. |

Yeah but like, atm Link is far and away my strongest unit because he has a ton of levels from being involved in Legend Mode (which I finished on Normal all the way, so I gotta go through on Hard soon and get all the heart containers/pieces I missed and the skulltulas I missed) and also how broken the master sword's weapon set is - completely aside from the fact that it has 100 more power, at minimum, than any other weapon I've got. Even if I can't unlock either of its abilities yet, it still outclasses everyone else. |

I [radio edit]ing love unlocks. When I finished unlocking the characters and stages in Smash, I basically stopped playing unless it was with other people. I spent a lot of time in Dissidia, too, because of just how much stuff there was. It's hard for me to play an arcade-styled game without shittons of unlocks, because otherwise I tend to get bored without a sense of progress. |

I also love unlocks and never understood why people are against them so much. They give you a lot of incentive to play fighting games alone, and it gives you a sense of accomplishment when you unlock something, especially a hidden character or stage or something. I [radio edit]ing loved unlocking shit in MVC2 back in the day, and of course SSBM. |

I played Soul Calibur V for entirely way too long just to unlock new armor sets and to build characters with them. |

Generally, I'm pretty fond of them. As Raven points out, unlocks always give me further incentive to play a game. I loved playing Melee and uncovering all of the game's fighters, stages and trophies. (Albeit Mewtwo, god damn play for 20 hours >:U) It kept me hooked on it for ages as a kid beyond just the base game play. I think SEGA All Star games also do unlocking content really well in this day and age. Racing Transformed had a fantastic single player campaign that three other players could join in alongside you, with a variety of missions from races to traffic evasion to performing stunts. And you also had a difficulty setting for each mission. The higher the difficulty you cleared, the more stars you got, which you could then use to exchange for characters and unlock secret paths along the campaign. I remember sticking to it for ages. *_* |

This. And it's not like there was all that much else to the game itself, but I had so much fun just doing quick battles for amazing clothes. Soul Calibur 3 was very similar back in the day, too. Unlocks are a great motivating factor for me, basically. |

I tend to like unlocks, yeah. Sounds like Hyrule Warriors basically follows the Dynasty Warriors model, which works for me. It's a great way to add replay value and appreciate what you're earning. |
