I've been reading a few comics lately, come across a few excellent ones I'd recommend to anyone.![]() Southern Bastards Can't recommend it enough. It's about family, heritage, revenge, crime, and the culture of the deep south. Had me on the edge of my seat for the whole thing. Last issue of the 3rd story arc comes out next month. ![]() Snow Blind Beautifully illustrated miniseries about a teenager trying to uncover the past of his family who moved to Alaska for mysterious reasons. Incorporates social media into the mystery in an organic way, something I haven't seen done well before. ![]() The Fade Out A murder mystery set in the late 40s, very stylish and atmospheric, I loved how all the characters were developed. It's also a look into the seedy underbelly of hollywood and the secrets people keep. ![]() Manifest Destiny Another series I can't recommend enough. Lovely art that really serves the adventurous and weird alternate version of the 1804 Lewis and Clark expedition across North America. Surreal monsters and weird diseases are the main attraction, but the characters and drama are also great. ![]() The Private Eye Set in a future where everyone hides their identity in public due to a past event that revealed everyone's private information, a very obvious play on current fears about privacy vs security. Starts with a murder mystery and soon leads into a conspiracy, perhaps the story is a little bland, but the interesting setting makes up for the straightfowardness. |

Does manga count (like, strictly manga, as in manga that does not have an anime adaption) or is it comics only? Also I read Batman:Year One and I remember liking it. You guys should check that out. |

I'd been looking at Southern Bastards before. Good reminder for me. Haven't read anything brand new recently, but kept up with Saga, Lumberjanes, Ms. Marvel, Black Science, and The Wicked + The Divine. I'm on phone so I don't feel like typing up descriptions but I will when I get home. I also need to get back into new TMNT, I fell behind. I had a free month of Marvel Unlimited back in December. Some new stuff I liked from then was Thors, the new Star Wars stuff (except Kanan, don't care about him) and M.O.D.O.K. Assassin. I think there were some others too but I've forgotten. It's not my thread so I won't speak for him, but I would definitely count manga, it's no different really. Related, if anyone knows much about French comics I would love to know more about that. |

Going to check out Southern Bastards. I'm also highly recommending Saga! Skipping the superhero stuff for the moment, might do them later The Walking Dead. I don't think I need to say much about this one. East of West by Jonathan Hickman. An epic dystopian science fiction western set in a world where the american civil war never ended. American Vampire. This one was originally created during the early days of the Twilight craze. The writer, Scott Snyder (Detective Comics, Batman) felt that he wanted to return the monster to the vampire. Pretty cool mythology with vampires being seperated into several different species around the world and the story starts with the first American vampire species. Preacher. About to become a show on AMC. "One of the most celebrated comics titles of the late 1990s, PREACHER is a modern American epic of life, death, love and redemption also packed with sex, booze, blood and bullets - not to mention angels, demons, God, vampires and deviants of all stripes. At first glance, the Reverend Jesse Custer doesn't look like anyone special-just another small-town minister slowly losing his flock and his faith. But he's about to come face-to-face with proof that God does indeed exist. Merging with a bizarre spiritual force called Genesis, Jesse now possesses the power of "the Word," an ability to make people do whatever he utters. He begins a violent and riotous journey across the country in search of answers from the elusive deity." 100 Bullets. A dark and mysterious crime/pulp/noir story about revenge. Y - The Last Man. "A dystopian science fiction comic book series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra published by Vertigo beginning in 2002. The series is about the seemingly only man who survives the apparent simultaneous death of all other male mammals on Earth except the man's pet monkey." Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. The comic adaption of the novel that was the basis for the Blade Runner movie. There was also a prequel comic called Dust to Dust. Deadly Class. Read/Seen Assasination Classroom? The story here follows a school of assassins in training. Bone. One of the best of all times. Just...just read it. Chew. "Chew is an American comic book series about a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) agent who solves crimes by receiving psychic impressions from food, including people." And it's great. |

I've seen Chew recommended a lot, premise sounds interesting to say the least. It's definitely on my list. If you're interested in comics as a medium, I'd recommend Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud. A really accessible look at the history and potential of comics as an art form. Got me into looking at older comics and their precursors, like the worldless novels of the 20s and 30s which are really cool. Gods' Man is probably the classic of the style, all done in awesome panels like this: Spoiler: click to toggle

That reminds me that all of Little Nemo, a comic strip from 1905, is public domain, and there are multiple places to read it online. Great art in those and an almost terrifyingly accurate depiction of what dreams and nightmares can be like. I also like the way the author uses lots of atypical panel shapes and sizes based on the actions of the story. |

Yo, you can get a free month of Marvel Unlimited right now with promo code TEAMCAP or TEAMIM at checkout. You have to put in your credit card info though, and if you're not gonna renew the subscription you have to manually cancel it at the end of the month or it will renew. Fortunately this is an easy process on Marvel's website. http://marvel.com/civilwarmu |

We should make this into a general comics discussion topic. Because I just finished this weeks Justice League, Superman and the highly anticipated DC Universe Rebirth which turned the DC universe upside down and marks the beginning of a relaunch and a new era at DC. And wow. Remember what happened at the end of the famous classic comic "Watchmen" from the 80s? You know, this page? Ever wondered just where the [radio edit] Dr. Manhattan went and what he was going to do? Well, fasten your seatbelts friends, DC REBIRTH HAPPENINGS

You guys should read the new Flintstones comic. It's just two issues in but it's really great. DC publishes it. The humorous social commentary is spot on. Spoiler: click to toggle No seriously it's one of the best books out right now. It's quite surreal. The first issue covers war & ptsd, evil corporations, art. Second issue covers religion, drugs and consumerism. All with that dark humour and that social commentary. And it's in a [radio edit]ing flintstones comic. Read it. Now. |

Hehe well tbh I wouldn't be too surprised if it keeps going. Hopefully it sells well and keeps going forever and ever. They do have inside fourth wall jokes like they joke about https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flintstones_Chewable_Vitamins as drugs. GRAND DAD might be a little too far but the longer it goes...

I don't want to live in a world where someone needs a wikipedia page to tell them what flintstones vitamins are I haven't been reading much lately, kinda fell off the wagon. I did hear about new lawsuits against Archie Comics from old Sonic artists though! They're pretty much [radio edit]ed. |

Vision. It's certainly not your usual superhero comic book you might expect from Marvel. Are the Star Wars books part of Unlimited? The main Star Wars book and Darth Vader are pretty neat. Second half of last year? Hm. I think pretty much all books were part of an event back then. Secret Wars. End of the world and reboot of the entire universe kind of thing. But hey that could be fun to read through in one sitting. Events usually work better like that for me. I'm personally not a really a big fan of Marvel post-Secret Wars tbh so I can't really say what's good or not. Besides Vision. But I guess try out the big Avengers and X-books and see if you like them or not. Spider-Man - Deadpool is the big comedy book I'd say. The two biggest quippers in the Marvel universe team up for maximum quip. You get the deal. I think I liked The Astonishing Ant-Man? But yeah, Vision for sure. So does the Unlimited deal only reach as far back as second half of last year? Because otherwise I'd recommend Hickman's Avengers and New Avengers run (they're connected), leading up to Infinity and Secret Wars. Started in 2013 I think, with Marvel NOW. Also Thor from the same line of releases. |

Unlimited has tons of stuff, all the way back to the first Marvel Comics issue with the android Human Torch and Namor. I was asking about that time frame because the last time I had a subscription the latest stuff that was available on there was from mid-2015. I wanted to see what new stuff that went up since then was worth looking at. I was already going through the Star Wars stuff (though a publication order of all of it is annoyingly hard to figure out) but Vision looks like a good recommendation. |

Alright, I read all of Vision that's up there now. Definitely a little unconventional for superhero comics and I'll try to keep up with it in the future. One question though: is the identity of the person whose brainwaves were used to make Virginia intentionally vague because it has not been revealed (at least, not within the first six issues)? Or is it already known from events in another series and they just haven't said it explicitly here yet? I assume it's Wanda, given what I know of Vision's past, but they haven't said much about it yet. |
