You can always just... not use Fast Travel, right? >_>

Wheey! I've became a human being!! I am very handsam!

Right, but the addition of Fast Travel also leads to a shift in the priorities of the designers. Without fast travel, you've got to make sure the pathways to and from places are always interesting, whether that be through landmarks and geographical features; tombs, caves, and ruins you might find along the way; NPCs with quests; or other unique things to do. That becomes a lot less important with automatic fast travel to any major place of interest, and thus the world becomes more homogenized.

Note that even Morrowind has -some- forms of fast travel, but most of them cost money and can only take you from one predetermined spot to other predetermined spots (e.g. a ferry from one island port to another coastal town, or a teleport service from one city's Mage's Guild to another's). The only free teleportation services are pretty difficult to gain and even once you have them can still be difficult to use!

Yeah, that's generally how I do it. There's mods for both Skyrim and Oblivion that implement an in-universe Fast Travel mechanic, usually movement between cities via carriage or boat. It gives the means of moving between cities quickly, which is often necessary because quests will have you popping all over the place (for the same reason Crash mentioned), but limits the functionality and maintains immersion more.

I'm an immersion whore for Elder Scrolls games.

Yeah, usually what I attempt to do is disable quest markers and try to find my objective using environmental clues or in-game directions/text. Going off of what Crash said, that works in Morrowind, since the game's quests are designed around following specific directions. Try doing that in Skyrim or Fallout 4, which provide no such clues, since the developers are assuming you're following the quest markers anyway.

It was doable in Oblivion, which had a pretty solid quest log, and NPCs were also generally helpful.

It's actually impossible in vanilla Skyrim to not use quest markers - NPCs don't even tell you where to go for a lot of quests in the dialogue that gives it. Without using quest markers, you'd just be given 'what' you're doing, and have zero indication of 'where'.

Fortunately, there's a solution to that, too. For the quest log, at least.

But yeah if you haven't enjoyed the vanilla magic system, Adna, I totally get that, because not only is it kind of boring, it's also useless in comparison to the broken crafting system.
Apparently I've not explored crafting enough, because I haven't made myself into a god with it yet.

Magic is boring to me because my other option that my character has is sneaking up behind somebody with truly minimal effort and left clicking once behind their back. I get a cool cinematic, I get their soul in the process (based enchantment) and I get to move on to the person right next to them, who somehow has not noticed any of this because I've maxed my sneak perk tree and am muffled because of my kickass Dark Brotherhood boots (I also like this set because it increases bow damage by 30%, holy shit this game has such broken equipment).

I'm going to pause here to mention that my Firefox doesn't think that "kickass" is a word. [radio edit] you, internal dictionary. I'm adding that right now.

Mandatory Mods
Based on those screenies on the UI mod, you'd be an idiot not to use it. It's just a straight upgrade. Four utility mods to make mods work makes me a bit nervous, I'll have you know. Seems clumsy and bloated, kinda like how Minecraft mods can quickly become. >_>

General Improvements
"Disparity" looks geared towards veterans of Elder Scrolls games. Granted that racial differences in this game are either anemic or purely cosmetic, but I don't really care about this. The other two mods in this category that caught my attention were the ones that prevent NPC's from running stupidly into danger.

Graphical Improvements
JK's Skyrim interests me. Expanded Towns and Cities also looks neat, but I can't imagine that JK's Skyrim and it play together nicely. RS Children looks good. I was surprised and disappointed to see only two actual character models for child NPC's in the vanilla game. Come on, devs, don't be lazy assholes. Quality World Map is a no-brainer. I'll want to use that. Colored Map markers turn the map from a black and white cluster[radio edit] into a rainbow cluster[radio edit]. The Enhanced Lights and FX definitely makes the game prettier, but as an archer, I rather prefer the vanilla rendering of nighttime. I can still see targets.

Quests/Areas
Every single one of these looks interesting to me.

So, after I get back from this business trip, I'm going to try and teach myself how to mod my client. If it's not rocket science, I think I'll do it. Thanks for the write-up, HJ! :3

To clarify a little:

USLEEP is not just necessary for mods, it is the most expansive bugfix out there and corrects literally thousands of flaws in the game. If you don't grab anything that needs SKSE, then yeah, you can skip it, but do not pass on USLEEP. When I said that every mod assumes you have it, I mean because it's a straight improvement over vanilla with no downsides at all and that it's highly recommended for every player no matter what.

JK's Skyrim has two versions: Full and Cities Only. The latter is designed to play perfectly with ETaC (except for some overlapping crates or something in one area that I forget, but it's completely negligible). There actually is a mod to patch the Full version with ETaC, too, but that's getting a bit too much for you to start, I think (I also haven't tested that yet).

ELFX regular files do not actually change how dark nighttime is, to my knowledge. I messed around with it for a bit and saw no change until I used their Weathers addon, which does make nights darker. So I think you'd be fine with just that (unless the changes to the lighting didn't interest you, in which case you don't really need it).

Modding in general is pretty easy. Download the zipped file, unzip the contents to the Skyrim\data folder, enable the mod from the launcher menu, and go. Most of the complications arise when you start getting more mods, or if you use more complicated management programs.

The Sin Thesis

You want to become a god? Max out your enchanting, and give yourself Fortify Destruction and Fortify Conjuration on all your clothes. Get the dual-cast stun skill (Impact) in the Destruction tree. Get fireball.

You are now able to stunlock everything, forever, without running out of magicka. You also get a ton of minions to summon. It's great.

wait what?

There's no paywall. There was a period about a year ago where Bethesda tried to introduce paid mods; it failed miserably due to severe community backlash. During that time, many mod authors made promises that their mods would remain free, and placed the "Forever Free" images in their mods to display that (and shit on Bethesda). Some of them are still there because people are lazy or making a point or something, idk.

Everything is free, and should be available from the links I gave.

"Downloads above 2MB in size" (lol) "require a premium membership."

EDIT: wait, it's just a very sneaky message that makes it seem like you need a premium membership

Doesn't everyone go on nexus for all their mods anyway, i've literally never heard of a mod that's behind a paywall. [radio edit] that, if there's a paywall it's probably shady as [radio edit]

That's where he was, Shads, it was a Nexus message trying to encourage him to sign up for a premium membership.
