Is it worth trying the modern Shantae games if I didn't like the original? I assume they improve on it a lot but I'm not sure to what extent.

Depends what you didn't like about the original. The two sequels have much smoother and more refined gameplay, in my opinion. You have increased flexibility with attacks and platforming. Doesn't hurt that the games are zoomed out more, meaning you can actually see more than just your immediate surroundings, which I think was a problem in the original.

The second game is pretty short but offers a good reintroduction to the franchise. It's not a bad place to start. The third game adds a whole slew of new gameplay elements and is probably the best of the three.

Most of my problems were with how wonky the gameplay was, yeah. Also didn't really like the stage and boss designs, though I didn't get too far in the game.

The stages and the overall approach to boss design don't change too much as the series goes on, from what I recall. They only become more complex, I'd say, which is about what you'd expect. The wonkiness in the gameplay is definitely rectified, though.

Debating between buying Undertale or Trails FC, then that's my self-imposed limit for this week.
Just get both!

Shantae and the Pirate's Curse is good as heck, I love that game, if someone is on the fence then ol' Santa Gnarly is here to help fill your virtual stockings (srs)

I've always meant to pick up the Shantae games but never got around to it lol. How do they compare to other platformers?

They're definitely of the Metroidvania slant, at least in terms of the variety of abilities you have at your disposal. I'd say there's more of a focus on upgrading and using your abilities and items to fight enemies and solve puzzles than traditional platforming. The games are also very conducive to speedrunning, to give you an idea of their tempo.

I think they're pretty awesome and plenty creative. But maybe someone with more experience with platformers could paint a clearer picture?

That's basically how I would describe it as well, Asph.

Aside from what you mentioned, the game has plenty of character to spare and some humorous dialog in between platforming. Also, if you dig game music at all the music for the game is damn good, some pieces are very catchy. I personally recommend it to anyone who isn't immediately turned off by metroidvania-style games or platforming games in general.

I've only played risky's revenge up through the octopus boss, but I can pretty much confirm everything here from what I've seen so far. The main thing that caught me off guard was how far into the Z plane you can go, giving you a lot more to keep track of in terms of navigation than a typical metroidvania.

Re: Speedrunning: I already plan to look up a speedrun of this game once I finish it. I can just imagine how silly it would look with all the backdash spam they'd be doing. Need to go somewhere fast? Face the other direction.

Even if it doesn't go on sale this season, it's worth the full price!

Though, of course, hopefully you can pick it up less.

All these anime sales @_______@

I picked up Calamity Trigger and Continuum Shift: Extend, because they were like 3 and 7 dollars, respectively. I only have them for 360 so far, and I'd like to have them on PC. And the latter is my favourite game of all time, so...

I also picked up Fault Milestone 1 and 2, at Asphodel's recommendation, and Mushihimesama, on Miral's!

Everyone buy the Umihara Kawase games, they're fun

Also gonna recommend Deathsmiles because I prefer horizontal shooters over vertical. And if Darius Burst is in this sale, get that too. It only recently came out so it might not be on here

Deathsmiles is ok, but vertical shooters are defs better B)
I dunno if -30% is worth it, but if it gets in the $5 range that's probs a good deal. Maybe go up to $10 if you have the extra money

also the final boss is lol

Everything mentioned so far is good

Astebreed is pretty stylish
There's a collection of Raiden games, but I don't know if they're in this sale
One or two Thunder Force games are in those SEGA classics collections

Unfortunately I have to sit these sales out this time around. I already have over $600 dedicated to pre-orders in June, so my spending has to be on the very low side for the next couple of months.

Sucks, because I'm sure there's a decent number of VNs on sale that I would have liked to pick up. Oh well, I'm sure they'll be on sale again at some point, so all I have to do is wait.

if I wanted Shantae, would I have a better experience on 3DS or steam?
