I was planning on doing something like this years ago, even before I took my extended break from the Temple, but I figure there's no time like the present. tl;dr: I'm going to play through XCOM, replacing the name generator with a list of Temple members (particularly those mentioned in the Organization stories) and tell you guys all about it. More specifically: Since I'm still, years later, quite fond of the stuff Hinoa and others did with the Organization setting and all the craziness that a Temple Project entailed, I've decided to dredge it back up again. I'm also coupling this with my own desire to play a round of XCOM - Enemy Within, since while I played through the original version I have yet to attempt to play it through with the expansion. The end result is that I'm going to mash up accounts of my gameplay and what's going on with the occasional narrative piece set with The Organization universe as a kind of background and grounder. To start us off, the first piece of narrative, contained with spoilers for those who don't give a shit (it is the Games forum after all): Narrative: In Which Delfeir is Recalled to HQ So for those who aren't aware, XCOM is a turn-based strategy combat game where you control a squad of trained units in combat against an invading alien force. The missions are broken up with a management system, where the organisation must find and use the funding and resources it gets from missions to arming, training, building and equipping the force to properly fight back against the overwhelming menace they're presented with. It is a classic series by now, though the game I'm playing is the recent remake of XCOM: Enemy Unknown and its expansion Enemy Within. It's also quite notable for being particularly punishing: the original game was relentlessly unforgiving at times, and there are further times where luck just will not be on my side. There's a very real possibility that I won't make it through the playthrough successfully. Nonetheless, gonna give it a shot. This post has my starting narrative, but future ones will have screenshots amidst gameplay accounts as well as any further narrative I write up. Not sure how long it'll take to get through a playthrough, but some of that will probably correspond to how inspired I am to write and how interested people are to nudge me further. Nonetheless, I'll try to keep this relatively constant and take on feedback from people as I play the game, so feel free to help (or hinder!) with suggestions as the playthrough goes. A few points to note: -As mentioned at the top, the Random Name Generator for soldiers has been modified to have only members of the Temple. This includes (almost) everyone who had an Organization profile for narrative purposes, but I've added a few names here and there. Some of these people may be inactive by now, but too bad, they're here. If you're a new member who joined in the last two years or are somebody who didn't get an Organization profile, say so in the topic and I'll add you to the list for future potentials. -Following from the above point, it is important to note that XCOM is notoriously difficult. Soldiers can and will die. Since they're named after people on the Temple, I put this disclaimer here: ANY DEATHS ARE COUNTERPRODUCTIVE TO GAMEPLAY AND ARE THUS COMPLETELY UNINTENTIONAL. IF YOUR AVATAR DIES, I SWEAR I DON'T MEAN ANYTHING BY IT. PLEASE DON'T BE OFFENDED. I doubt this'll be an issue but it's still worth bringing it up, and I'm not petty enough to kill a video game character with someone's name just because they shitposted once or twice, so don't assume it. -I will be playing the game on Classic difficulty (Hard, effectively) with Ironman enabled. Ironman means I cannot reload my save if things go badly: if I mess up or RNG hates me, the results WILL stick. Now, with all that said and done, let's see how this goes. I end this post with a question: the first step in the game has me selecting a continent for my home base. There are bonuses, but I'm not concerned about those - I'll go with popular vote. So, which continent shall I start on? -North America -South America -Asia -Africa -Europe |

Memo to self: ask Chrono to add in Australia as a potential location in the next build. Also, ask him how that 'brain bleach' project is coming, because I kinda need it. Tentacles were only the tip of the iceberg. I'm legitimately surprised I kept a straight face there. o_o Go with Europe, because why not. |

I posted this late-ish last night or else I probably would have remembered to make a Strawpoll for that. Thanks PK. I was legitimately disappointed that Australia wasn't an option for starting. Nonetheless, it's looking like Asia is in the lead with a close follow up on Europe. I can work with that, but I'll give it a bit longer to settle before I start up the campaign. |

North America, because the bonus is useful when fighting UFOs, and UFO-fighting is good for reducing panic. |

Note that Australia is treated as part of the Asian continent for this, so while you can't start there - Asia sticks you in Japan, I think (weeb it up) - you're pretty close. Alternatively, start somewhere else and enter Asia through Australia. It makes no real difference to me! |

Took a bit longer than I planned to get this ready, but we're good to go now. First combat mission complete and following base introduction all set up and good to go. Here's the imgur link to all the screenshots, and I'll link them individually as needed in the narrative. Which, without further ado, we shall commence! Session 1: Operation Blinding Shroud, or Techies Can't Gender and Cars Are MVPs A pretty good first mission if I do say so myself. But the simulation is just beginning and this war could potentially go on for quite a while, with all sorts of twists and turns. The aliens will get stronger and smarter as time goes on, and I will probably just get stronger and stupider. You learn to have fun even by losing horribly in XCOM, and while I hope that's not the case, it could certainly wind up that way. Guess we'll see. Strawpoll for the next session: which rookies should see combat first? I can take up to four, possibly filling them out with the squaddies as I see fit (which is probably going to happen since I want to get some leveled up people fielded ASAP). Here's the list again. I'll give it a couple of days before I go for the next mission. |

I'm all for Raymoo to fight back these aliens. Let's hope they don't suddenly attempt grazing. |
