This is a comic that I've heard a pretty good amount of buzz over in the last year so this afternoon I borrowed the first three volumes from the library. I was done with volume three by 6 PM today because I couldn't stop. This is essentially a space fantasy with light Romeo and Juliet vibes. The protagonists are from different species, whose planets have been warring for so long, nobody knows what they are actually fighting about anymore, and the battle has spread across the entire galaxy. They have a child, and the story is about their life on the run from groups with various interests as they try to raise their hybrid daughter and find a different way of life for her than the violence and hatred they have always known. The character/species designs are pretty refreshing: spell-casting horned people; robots that are essentially human but with grey skin and computer screens for heads; ghost kids, complete with fatal injuries still evident; an egg mistaken for a planet, housing a space-devouring fetus; and a Lying Cat, a cat that can always tell when a person is not telling the truth and will be sure to tell you so. And the artist's work is just fantastic, particularly the colors: Spoiler: click to toggle The writer (who previously wrote Y: The Last Man) is pretty good at blending sci-fi action, personal drama, mundane comedy, political drama, and suspense in the right amounts, so you never get too bored, nor too overloaded. At its heart it is a story about building something you care about, whether that be a child, a life, or a work of art. It's a great comic and the only reason I would ever not recommend it to someone is that it does depict nudity and sex, and uses all the hard swears. There has also been a few instances of slurs, but very rarely and almost always not from people you're supposed to like. If that stuff is a deal breaker then Saga isn't for you, but otherwise everyone should read this. It's published by Image Comics, the comic is published monthly, and there are four paperback collections out so far. |

Saga is [radio edit]ing glorious. Been loving it since issue 1 and they're currently up to issue 25, with 26 coming out tomorrow. I love the surreal character designs and the equally crazy (but not without real life issues, from family problems to war) world. Very imaginative. Many loveable characters. Typical comments is Star Wars + Star Trek + Game of Thrones. Add the surreal design of the characters and all the species. And Ghüs melts my heart.
