We were talking about this on Skype, and I think it'd make a good thread. Don't let me down, folks!

For me, a good final fight is difficult, epic in proportion, and kind of sums up the whole of the game's themes, like gets to the heart of what it's all about.

For my top two favourites, one of them I didn't even play myself, kek, I just watched Silvy do it. But, Final Fantasy 12 and Tales of the Abyss.
FF12

Tales of the Abyss

Final Fantasy X was another good one for me, I'd say. We were also talking about how good Kid Icarus: Uprising's is.

I'm sure I'm forgetting lots, so please remind me by telling me your favourites. 8D

Xenosaga 3 pretty much describes what you said perfectly. Not necessarily the fight itself, but the cutscene leading up to it is amazing. Everything in the series literally built up to that point since

Xenosaga 3 spoilers

I'll mention some more later.

Echoing Kid Icarus Uprising. The amount of phases is insanely epic and really makes defeating the boss feel like a great accomplishment.

My picks are below. Major spoilers for each game.

Bayonetta

The Wonderful 101

Mother 3

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door

My servants never die

I'm not gonna go into detail about what happens in the fights cause I'm lazy and in class, but some of my favorites are the KH ones in general

I really enjoyed all of the ones I've played so far.
KH1 or 2 probably has my favorite sequence though

still doing BBS, on my 3rd (Aqua) playthrough and need to do DDD

Wheey! I've became a human being!! I am very handsam!

So the actual final boss of Metal Slug 3 is kinda crappy, but the entire rest of the Final Mission is tops. For starters, it's almost as long as the whole rest of the game combined. Then the way it repeatedly outdoes itself and pumps up the intensity, going over-the-top right after you thought you already went over-the-top again and again, keeps you on the edge of your seat (or stool, since it was an arcade game). It starts out with an aerial battle against the Rebellion Army which would fit as a typical level in any Metal Slug game. Eventually you battle aliens, team up with the enemy, get your player character captured and have to start play as one of the other three to rescue them, launch into space and fight a battle against motherships, infiltrate the alien base, destroy robots, rescue the enemy general, fight evil clones of the captured character, destroy a giant psychic alien brain, fight evil clone zombies of the captured character, and release the airlock of the alien base, sucking everyone out into the air for the final battle against a mechanically augmented alien brain as you fall through the atmosphere back to earth. As I said the last fight isn't actually that great but everything before it is!

Sound the horn and call the cry: "How many of them can we make die?"

I wouldn't say a final boss has to be epic, but it does have to have gravitas imo. Which is a lot easier to manage on an epic scale, but not impossible. A couple of examples of final bosses I found very well done that I wouldn't call "epic:"

Mass Effect 2

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days

Yeah, gravitas is the actual word for what I meant. I didn't mean the actual term "epic," more like the colloquial usage.

Seconding Mother 3.

I remember being really into the Mega Man Legends 2 final boss, but don't remember many details, but I'll throw it out there.

Skies of Arcadia and Golden Sun TLA stick out the most in my mind (you know, from when I was young and didn't understand how to properly exploit turn-based game mechanics)
And yeah, many KH games have good final boss sequences.

Since HJ brought up ME2 as well, it helps that the segment in question has [radio edit]ing amazing theme music as well.
