Temple of Kraden News: Welcome to the Temple of Kraden! ------ All worshipers may enter the Most Holy Place in single file, reflecting on the bountiful blessing Kraden hath provided unto him or herself since their last visit. Head coverings are not necessary, as true penitence and humility are found within. The Priests and Priestesses of Kraden endeavor to remind all that fresh orange juice is heavily preferred; only whores use frozen.
Greetings, heathen. Perhaps some fortuitous blessing of Kraden's grace hath led you to our humble Temple, or perhaps you are simply curious about this strange and wonderful cult. Should you be willing - and dare to hope - to achieve enlightenment, the door opens before you. Lo! Leave your old life behind! For once you step through, you become something more than just yourself.

You become a Kradenette.

Are you willing to make the rapturous plunge? Do you have what it takes?

Also, some people just like that kind of thing. Doesn't mean they're meant to be realistic. Or complex for that matter. I do get there's a mentality that one follows the other, but that's not necessarily the mindset of every person who enjoys tragedy.

Yeah, by realism I don't mean "this could happen in the real world" because obviously shit like magic would disqualify that. I mean shooting for a realistic approach to what humans would naturally be capable of and how they would act in X situation, overshooting, and landing in "people are horrible and nothing good ever happens" territory. Because it's easy to get hung up on that mentality, and it's an easy substitute for actual complexity.
Wait... why are we talking about Game of Thrones?

The only shows I can think of that tries for that is maybe stuff like Black Lagoon, GitS, Akira, Monster, Lone Wolf and Cub, maybe Psycho-Pass? Is that what he's talking about? In which case there's definitely a lot of Western influence, but hardly the primary influence.

Wouldn't every piece of literature ever conceived be striving for realism if we're using Squee's definition?

Lel yeah, I thought of that too.

http://www2.iath.virginia.edu/elab/hfl0254.html

The first three paragraphs here are a basic summary of aspects of realism, but I can crib note it in addition. In each one, remember that all of these qualities depend on what the reader/author/society believes are realistic.
Realism is:
- An objective split between interior minds of the characters and the world (so no weather reflecting emotions)
- Plots (supposedly) determined by cause-and-effect
- Focusing on the mundane or everyday aspects of reality
- Characters of psychological complexity who (ideally) act based on traceable parts of cause-and-effect.
- In writing, excessive attention to description as a means of producing a "real" and "believable" world.

Keep in mind that this is mostly a movement developed in Western lit, and that the same points come up independently in other literatures.

I think you were talking to Squee, HJ, but it's probably useful for someone to provide a definition.

Sword Art Online is a series specifically created to make nerds think they're cool. The main character is a bishounen with no redeeming qualities, who dons an EDGY AS [radio edit] trenchcoat (Circa. The Matrix) and is surrounded by a mass of useless female support characters.

Anime these days isn't as cool as it was back in say, the eighties, where they could still be original. Hokuto no Ken is a good example of what the eighties came up with, it even broke the "men don't cry" stereotype. In this series, there are badass women too, who kick ass x10 more than any female character does these days.

Now all I see is a lot of innuendos followed by bishonen lead characters who acquire multiple useless female support characters without doing anything to become worthy of them.

But there's plenty of cool anime these days.

I say that as somebody who watches more 80s and 90s anime than basically anybody else on Temple.

See, the thing is... that's the normal opinion about SAO here. Try somewhere else. Like Golden Sunri- No, wait, you already did that there.

Maybe.

We're getting a new J9 series soon enough though, while also having awesome stuff like Symphogear, Gaiking, Scryed, Shin Mazinger, more JoJo's, Sengoku Basara, etc. during this century.

Coolness will never die.

Yeah, I definitely prefer the anime of this century, but I know I haven't seen a lot of last century's stuff. So that's more an opinion based out of ignorance than an educated stance.
