Interesting. I'm looking forward to this: I greatly enjoyed Bravely Default, even if I never completely finished it. Most people who play through it can probably understand why - it just kind of got repetitive towards the end, you know? But I've read up on and watched the conclusion so I'm looking forward to this one.

Seems like they're going from FFV to FFIV now... here we go with the people on the Moon again. Still, interesting to see how it all pans out. If Cat User is a thing I will use four of them, mark my words.

But yeah, Seccy, not once while playing through the game did I think "Huh, this is very Golden Sun-esque", mainly because the entire time I was like "Huh, this is very Final Fantasy V-esque" to the point that any similarity between BD and GS would just get me to laugh. Also, Sakuraba did not compose any of the music, that would be a guy called Revo. That he might have been one player in a concert for that music is incidental and akin to me saying that I was the composer for Chrono Cross because I saw Yasunori Mitsuda once.

You've met Yasunori Mitsuda, or is that just a hypothetical?

But to stay on-topic, I never even got the first game. I was pretty interested at first but the demo didn't grab me, and I feel like it's one of those games that's not gonna be anywhere near as good as it's made out to be (basically just like Xenoblade). I might give it a shot one day though.

I remember reading a comment somewhere, either on GAF or the Temple, which said something akin to "Bravely Default is what Dark Dawn should have been." And my thoughts were basically

[radio edit].

NO.

But then, the fewer cues GS takes from FF or FF-likes, the better, or so I've always thought. Not to admonish BD.

But yeah, Slash, I felt the same way about the demo. As a fan of FFIII and FFV, the job system was right up my alley. But the characters weren't my cup of tea, and the battle system seemed a bit obtuse (why defend and reserve attacks when you can just, you know, attack now?) Bravely Second looks a bit more colorful, though, so I'll be keeping an eye on it just in case.

I was at a concert where the Eminence Symphony Orchestra was playing a bunch of video game tributes and things, as they are wont to do, and for one song Yasunori Mitsuda came out and conducted them. So I wouldn't say I've met him, just saw him as was in my original message. Either way, the point still stands for the purposes of smacking Seccy on the nose for silliness. :3

I still need to finish Bravely Default. I never got back around to doing so because of how repetitive I've heard the second half of the game is and it just turned me off of wanting to go back to the game. Hopefully I can get myself to complete it before Bravely Second comes west though. That trailer was pretty nice though. I just hope they don't make the same mistake in this one.

I'm much the same as you are in that regard, I just can't be bothered to finish it because of the repetition. You're probably better off just viewing it - I don't know any of my friends who were actually able to stick it out to the ending themselves.

Yeah, I might do that. I could probably plow through the rest of the game pretty fast though, since I'm horribly over leveled. If I remember correctly, I'm level 80+ in Chapter 4. Went a little crazy with auto-battle.

The other big problem to me besides the obvious one is how the game kind of punishes experimentation, since a lower job level actually has worse stats than a higher job level. Might as well just stick with all your level 13 jobs and never touch any classes you've kept low, because once you reach chapter 6 stuff is just too strong to be messing around with that, unless you lower your difficulty level. But you shouldn't have to do that.

I tended to switch jobs once they hit level 8, as that is good enough for endgame. As for repetitive, that's only if you do all of the sidequests. You can clear chapters 5-8 in a couple of hours if you just stick to mandatory stuff.

No, it's still repetitive, you just repeat less stuff if you avoid the sidequests. In fact the sidequests end up being the only thing that aren't repetitive, marginally.

I do have to agree with Seccy on the job front though, the game really doesn't punish experimentation, it encourages it. You do have some setups that a lot of people hit on and basically can carry you through the game, but it's really not hard to stick someone in a new job and watch them rocket through the levels lategame while the other party members protect them. Really, the combat system and all the things you can do with it were the main appeal to me, especially once the game got repetitive as [radio edit].

Yeah, the game IS repetitive. It can be mitigated as I said (or not, depenidng on opinion), but the combat system really is fun to do. (Though I remember somebody getting a TPK when they took 9999 true damage on a character with that black mage skill that spreads the damage evenly across the party).

Once I got to the repetition, and realized what it was, I just found it fun to take out every boss in every iteration to experiment with my jobs until I found my favorite combination. And once I found that magic combination, seeing it work so well against all the toughest foes grouped up into one big batter just made it that much more enjoyable.

The repetition at that point in the game may be obnoxious, but there are ways of making the best of it.

What WAS your final combination?

Iirc I had Spiritmaster/White Mage on Agnes, Edea was Ninja/something else, Tiz was Samurai/something else, and Anazel was Dark Knight/Vampire.

Gonna have to check what Edea and Tizs other jobs were.

Iirc I had Spiritmaster/White Mage on Agnes, Edea was Ninja/something else, Tiz was Samurai/something else, and Anazel was Dark Knight/Vampire.

My final team was:
-Tiz: Ninja with Freelancer Commands. Abilities: BP recovery, frenetic fighting, transience, and Katana Lore. He was like my secondary attacker with a few gimmicks

-Agnes: Performer with White Mage commands. Abilities: BP recovery, Holy One. Shield Lore, and Angelic Ward. She Buffed and healed the crap out of everyone

-Ringabel: Time Mage with Red Mage commands. Abilities: BP recovery, Group-Cast All, Shield Lore. He was the core of my strategy. With all characters having BP recovery and him having Group-Cast All, I would poison my whole team twice per turn and get +4BP EVERY turn. I could also subsequently cleanse my whole team, buff my whole team, use Major "single target" attacks on the whole enemy team, etc... I typically used "Quick" (+# of attacks) and "reraise" (auto-revive) on my whole team at once.

-Edea: Ninja with Spell Fencer commands. Abilities: BP recovery, Katana Lore, Frenetic Fighting, Hawkeye. She was my Primary attacker. Duel Wielding Katanas after buffing her attacks with spell fencer magic. with all the typical buffs active, she would usually attack 32 times twice and deal 9999 on each one (especially in the likely scenario where she critted with her Katanas). Add to the fact that she could take 4 actions per turn, and she could deal approximatly 80K per turn given the right conditions.

Even when the final boss 1-shotted my whole team multiple turns in a row, reraise-spam kept my team going, and Edea never let up on the attacking. Good times...
