Continuing from this topic. As someone who has previously had epilepsy and still find viewing flashing lights extremely uncomfortable, seeing a series of posts with an image like this in every other one makes threads practically unreadable. Even ignoring the epilepsy issue, signatures should not be wholly distracting from the purpose of viewing a thread - that is, reading posts. Any flashing images in sigs should be spoiler tagged, and they should be completely disallowed for avatars. |

To be fair, he did ask somebody to hide their sig and this person refused, sparking this topic. |

Why should I have to disable signatures just because of one or two people ruining the whole thing? Most people don't have flashing ridiculous signatures, nor do they change their sig often; it becomes a useful way to identify users, especially when they change avatar frequently. |

Well, it might be hard to determine in a rule exactly what counts as "flashing" or how disruptive a sig is, as people have different standards. We already have rules meant to contain sigs, and it wouldn't hurt to throw in a "watch out for too much flash" in there, but there is still room for conflicts like this. Perhaps the SOP could be 1. Shoot the owner of the sig a respectfully worded PM explaining the situation and requesting a spoiler tag (just because a seemingly offhand comment in PG is easier to brush off. the details of epilepsy and stuff are important to the request) 2. honestly most people would probably oblige but if not, talk to the mods. |

Frankly, flashing/animated images shouldn't be allowed anywhere near text in my opinion. I even find animated Livejournal icons annoying when I'm trying to read comments. I also hate that the Tumblr radar has animated stuff from time to time (actually, I just disable it anyway) I have avatars and signatures turned off myself but I'm sure I'd find animated avatars and signatures pretty annoying too. |

If you have adblock you can block them by putting in its url in the adblock list. |

^Just make sure to only block that specific URL and not that entire image host like I accidentally did one time. |

It would be great if there was a blacklist for such a thing, because I know from another forum that people can really abuse the signature space with all sorts of shit. One of the admins on one of them even made an image that when loaded would change every other image to a picture of a cat, it was spoilered with a bait but it could have been worse. That and things I don't want to see in general, such as ponies. |

I figure it would be like most rules here: Nothing is really enforced until someone complains about it. The rules exist as a means to keep the temple a comfortable place for everyone. If someone's fudging the rules and it's not causing problems for anyone, it doesn't really matter. |

In which time you should be at least 16 and old enough to understand that flashing lights cause seizures in some epileptics. |

I don't think we need a whole new rule change, but I agree that picture should be spoilered or removed. |

Would this also extend to flashing text, Leaf? Like [rainbow]sparkling grape juice[/rainbow] and etc? I see no problem with just spoilertagging flashing images, they do appear on every post. I don't think turning off all sigs because of one person isn't a good solution. Adblock is an option, it just depends whether you want to emphasis people's freedom to use whatever images they like as long as ToS is respected, or people to browse without having to worry about epilepsy. However, given that the former is dependent on having seen the image already, which defeats the purpose, I think the latter might be preferable? But yes: does this extend to any kind of flashing thing, such as text or an image put in a post? Or only sigs? |

As an epileptic as well, I do say that sparkling grape juice does get on my nerves. Though I am photosensitive it is not to a point where it can cause seizures. |

I've had two seizures, though I actually do not know if I'm epileptic or not. I find that flashing images do bother me, but that might be psychologically-induced. |

I think the relevant question is: on whom should the onus be? Should it be the responsibility of the person with the discomfort to raise it with the poster of the offending image? Or should it be something we hold the general community to, to not post/spoiler images that could reasonably pose a problem? On some levels, it seems like a subjective (as opposed to eg. An ideological thing) which makes me think it should be the former, but I think there is value in reinforcing the idea that members need to be considerate of others. |

I like the spoiler tag idea. Some people have epilepsy and that is not fun to deal with. There are also others who get migraines or motion sickness from images like that. Not saying you should ban them, but at least spoiler tag them. Then you could still have your sig, and people who don't want to look at it don't have to so it's a compromise. It's also respectful to those members who have those health issues. |
