Episodes 3-4 Still awesome. Love the Icarus motif turned on its head in this installment. Also liked how EP4 was patently ridiculous. People who don't like this are craven fools. |

So, remind me. What are the criticisms of this series? Aside from "it's not supa-kawaii pantsu~" |

Well, I still don't know wtf it is, for one. The plot summaries I've seen don't look particularly intriguing either. My criticisms remain the same as before: I've only heard vague, unconvincing and noncommittal praise of it so far, and am not willing to invest the time and diskspace to download/watch an anime until I hear a decent pitch of it. Going off of just kinda "Yeah this is good!" got me to watch Kill la Kill, and... no. Not again. |

I don't think I've ever heard of it being 'criticized', so I'm not sure how to answer your question. If you're asking 'why isn't this more popular?' that's a whole separate can of worms, and I wouldn't be able to answer it, I'd have to watch it first and there are just other things I'd rather watch first. |

A college guy is stuck in a two-year time loop. Each episode explores the choice he makes as a freshman regarding the circle/club/society he decides to be a part of, usually ending in self-administered bitter disappointment, until he learns his lesson. @Adna: I don't have any major criticisms for the show personally because I like it so much, but I believe it's more of a "barrier of entry" problem especially when it comes to getting people to watch it. Tatami Galaxy doesn't look like an anime. The quirky animation style can be hit-or-miss depending on your priorities. Hell, it's based on an actual novel rather than a manga or light novel (basically anime plots in word form), so the target demographic is meant to be a much older audience than the average anime fan. Meaning, it's already lost a lot of people by being too different. Another reason I might think about this anime not being discussed a lot is, well, people aren't inherently skilled at discussing things. Even less so when it comes to analyzing media. Everyone I know who has watched Tatami Galaxy loves it, but it's hard to articulate further than "you should watch this, it's great" when you're not used to actually justifying your opinion with analysis or even caring enough to discuss potential themes with someone else of the same interest. Tatami Galaxy in particular falls prey to this because, boiled down, the entire series is hammering in a single message over and over and over and over again until he [radio edit]ing learns his lesson. A lot of its success and positive reception comes from the way the animation brings color and variety to each iteration of Watashi's life, and since nearly no one feels educated enough to talk about animation techniques and cinematography, all there is to talk about is the script. And Tatami Galaxy's script is deceptively simple and perhaps a bit too formulaic once you're able to get past Watashi's motormouth. |

Yeah, I'd put down formulaic and "lack of ambition" in terms of scope as my main criticisms. The latter is purely a matter of preference, however, and others would regard the narrow focus (as Simple said, Watashi -- is his name seriously Watashi? pls) as a strength. Formulaic is really the main one I'd have. The "themes" are also rather simplistic, but not necessarily a bad thing -- they're executed very well. The animation and cinematography definitely makes the premise worth watching. |

I'd offer that it's formulaic by necessity. I mean, it's a time-loop where Watashi makes incremental changes and discoveries that nudge him in the "right" direction (I don't know what the "right" direction is yet, mind you). |

Yeah, it's an unfortunate side-effect of the premise, coupled with the form. I think it would've been better as a movie instead of as an anime series. That would've cut out some of the unnecessary repetition (instead of fluffing out to be a season in length), plus allowed for greater variety in loop length (so sometimes it would be a long loop, sometimes a short loop, depending on the focus. EDIT: I thought the "right path" was pretty obvious. >.> |

Not really. He's never given a name and he only refers to himself as "watashi" which also means "I" in Japanese. Whether this is intended or not, people just call the narrator "Watashi" for simplicity's sake. Hell, MAL lists his name as "Watashi". |

Yeah, I was pls'ing because Watashi just means "I." I can see how it might have been intended in making the story more "universal," because then the viewer can maybe sympathize with his character more? Or that he's self-obsessed, but unable to see who he really is beyond the generic "I," thereby transposing a series of other possible I's onto his name without ever arriving at the one that only refers to him, making him fundamentally empty or a blank slate. |

Episodes 5-8 I had intended to binge-watch the show to completion tonight, but the end of Episode 8 seemed like such a good stopping point that I couldn't justify continuing. Also, I was getting sort of tired of the narrator's spaghetti. |

If you happen to like the visual aesthetic and direction of Tatami Galaxy, feel free to look up other works by the director, Masaaki Yuasa. I recommend Ping Pong: The Animation if that's the case. This anime is hardly the sole pinnacle of greatness that anime has to offer, but it is certainly one of the few that are so notable for their uniqueness. There's certainly more anime out there that may very well be catered to your tastes, and I'll be glad to suggest something should you ever, God forbid, be interested in watching more anime. Be lucky that I just so happen to have perfect taste unlike the rest of the plebians. |
