Thread.

After the unmitigated disaster that was Magica Madoka Puella Magi Girl Magic, I was affirmed in my belief that watching Chinese pornographic cartoons is suffering. But now I look to a more respected source for an animu suggestion: Dimplemild! Yes, Simple believes I should watch a particular show called "Tatami Galaxy." This thread shall serve as my running commentary on the series. In it, I will bequeath upon you unwashed masses my unimpeachable and completely correct Opinions. Hopefully while eliciting a few smiles along the way.

So without further ado, Adnarel watches: Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei (The Tatami Galaxy)!

Well, a single episode of this eclipses the sum total of everything good in Magika Magi Madoka Magoka Puella Magi Kawaii Teen Squad. No, seriously. More good art, more meaningful exposition, and even a better aural environment despite the lack of music. I am genuinely looking forward to watching more of this series.

This strikes me as one of those shows where metaphor and life are meant to blur, and I'm thrilled with that. That sort of characteristic is a hallmark in my favorite books (Phantom Tollbooth, A Wind in the Door, etc.). This show projects the impression, at least thus far, of being able to do that well, so I'm juiced to see some more of it. I think if I had to pick a single aspect of the show that I like the most so far, it would be the pace. Images and exposition blur by at just about my limit of being able to take it all in. The result is not too unlike roaring down the highway with all four windows down and music playing loud: exhilarating.

I don't have too many snarky or absurd things to say thus far, because this episode doesn't give me much opportunity to do so. Very pleased with it.

Glad you like, and interesting that you mention the pace to be the best part about the show so far. Of all the things about this show that people have to be warned about, it's that this show forces people to understand things fast. What happens on-screen and what's being said are not connected in an easy-to-understand manner and if you're slow on the uptake (or just plain bad at reading) things kind of blur too fast for comfort. Though I suppose that's the point of Tatami Galaxy given its subject matter.

You're definitely in for a treat with this one.

rude, I'm pretty sure you said Madoka Magica WAS mitigated.

lel, I knew you'd like Tatami, though. The style is definitely your cup of tea. And the pace of the first episode is pretty fantastic, yeah.

Episode 2

1:45 in - holy shit, is this show groundhog day?

After episode - oh, hell yes. Hell yes. We've got recurring motifs. We've got continuity. We've got clever jokes. We've got more good art. Dis, my friends, gon be gud.

So, really though, why isn't this hyped more? Why don't I see more avatars, sigs, and jokes out of this series? It's objectively better than other series that have had heydays here. I get the feeling this show isn't suffering from a lack of viewership, so what are people's complaints against this? I'm having trouble punching holes in this solid keel of a show.

No cute girls and it doesn't have the kawaii desu appeal to rake in people who want to sit in front of their monitor and turn off their brain for 24 minutes at a time.

Still haven't watched it myself, largely because I've only heard the title and vaguely positive feedback about it.

The damn name is effectively "universe of floormats," which, suffice to say, failed to intrigue me.

That's the English localization, even though the term "tatami galaxy" is still extremely relevant to how the story turns out. The Japanese title is more closely translated as "4½ Tatami Mythological Chronicles", which at least gives more insight to how the anime is structured.

And to answer Adna's question as to why this anime isn't shared more often, it's because, well, it's kind of something you only discuss if you're in the 2deep4u anime club within the anime club. Though you'd be hard pressed to find someone who seriously hated the experience or were too weirded out by the artstyle/pacing to continue further, it's difficult to put positive feelings about Tatami Galaxy into words. This anime is quite dense compared to the average anime, and tackles very different content than the average anime. It also doesn't help that watching Tatami Galaxy is a rather cold experience when it comes to character development, and the majority of anime fans like to attach themselves to characters in order to enjoy a series.

I'm not even sure I'd call it dense, it's pretty straightforward so far.

That title... doesn't really do anything for me, either.

"It's not 'universe of floormats', it's 'legends of a particular floormat arrangement.'

I am shocked to see an example of an anime's title actually influencing its viewership.
