Temple of Kraden News: Welcome to the Temple of Kraden! ------ All worshipers may enter the Most Holy Place in single file, reflecting on the bountiful blessing Kraden hath provided unto him or herself since their last visit. Head coverings are not necessary, as true penitence and humility are found within. The Priests and Priestesses of Kraden endeavor to remind all that fresh orange juice is heavily preferred; only whores use frozen.
Greetings, heathen. Perhaps some fortuitous blessing of Kraden's grace hath led you to our humble Temple, or perhaps you are simply curious about this strange and wonderful cult. Should you be willing - and dare to hope - to achieve enlightenment, the door opens before you. Lo! Leave your old life behind! For once you step through, you become something more than just yourself.

You become a Kradenette.

Are you willing to make the rapturous plunge? Do you have what it takes?

Well, we can touch base and compare schedules on Skype some time. =) I'm pretty flexible so long as it doesn't keep me up late on a work night.

-I definitely got the impression of somebody who claims to be over their past hardships, but puts up a tough front because she's really not over it.
This actually is exactly the case.

It never comes up in the anime, but Kyouko's primary magic is illusion magic. After her family's death, though, she developed a mental block about the whole thing and pretty much locked away her ability to use it.

Huh, neat bit of trivia. It makes sense for that to be the case too, considering the nature of her wish.

because man and God are about to meet, you know? or at least, Godoka and Homura 8D

my biggest nitpick here is Boyd describing and explaining what's about to happen before Squee gets to that part
it's like jfc let the man watch his show

I actually think it is more deep than DEEP and I'm willing to go through it and analyze stuff/answer questions with you if you want, but I think you might be willfully ignoring/missing a lot of subtext. If you don't care though, I don't mind.

Also, Madoka-as-Christ, thoughts? (as critique of Sayaka's worldly chivalry, Kyouko, and Homura's worldly selfishness)
And yeah, I'm curious what you'll think of Rebellion. xP

-Fell in love with a Madoka she hardly knew, put that Madoka on a pedestal, and tried to groom subsequent Madokas into being just like her idealized version.
-I'm reminded of a phrase somebody used to describe Vriska, but applies here as well: "The purpose of her character is to do precisely what is necessary, for all the wrong reasons, in the worst manner possible."
These are actually reasons I like Homura as a character. You don't get tragic characters in this medium and genre nearly at all. She took a childhood crush/loyalty formed during a time of emotional weakness to an extreme. Her efforts achieved results that are measurably better than the outset, but in a way that doesn't signify any kind of emotional stability.

I've seen Sayakas and Kyoukos. The Idealist vs the Cynic is nothing new. Mami is basically Obi Wan. Madoka is more of a blank slate that the other, more interesting characters orbit around. You can draw Kiritsugu/Homura comparisons, but Homura is more complete as a tragic figure.

I have to disagree about the grooming part, though. Her goal wasn't to change Madoka in any way other than the fact that she either dies a terrible death or (comes close to) witching out.

See, I don't mind, but taking this tack gives me the impression that you're just going to go on about how I don't geeeeeeeeet it, or I'm just looking for reasons not to like it.

Messianic archetype is messianic. I liked it, but I didn't see anything special about the way it was pulled off, aside from the fact that it felt a lot more organic than most instances of it I've seen. Which is nice, don't get me wrong--I'd rather see this than "oh she's just inherently loving and kind ^^ we'll never do anything with this" any day.

Fair enough. What I hate about a character, you can like about them.

I could not in good conscience call either Kiritsugu or Homura "more complete" than the other. There are too many parallels and neither, I think, was executed with much grace.

But those deaths were all informed by Madoka's nature. She either sacrifices herself for the good of the world, or becomes a witch after expending all her magical energy to make sure Walpurgisnacht is destroyed. Homura was attempting to avert both of those while keeping Madoka's personality close enough to the high ideal she had set for her, paradoxically requiring Madoka to make a selfish decision when it mattered most and going against her nature.

Rebellion, take 1:
Quote:

ThePhantomSquee: I'm already confused, I don't know what this "law of the universe" or whatever is supposed to be
Necare: aw come on
Reil: STAB HIM IN THE BUTT
Necare: SEE
Dracobolt: LoC is what M does in 12
Necare: not even squee gets i
Dracobolt: Necare, I will stream the show for you so we can watch together.
Peo: Why would you do this right before bed for me
Reil: The law is Madoka
Reil: Madoka is law
Reil: Madoka is life
Dracobolt: Madoka is life
Dracobolt: Madoka is waif-u
Peo: Now I'm never gonna get to sleep at a reasonable hour
Dracobolt: Hiiii, Peo!
Peo: Hello Draco~
Peo: Is this the last episode or...?
Necare: this is Disney on acid
Reil: This is
Lachesis: The movie.
Reil: Rebellion
Dracobolt: This is the movie, nublord.
Peo: aaaaah
Reil: the 3rd moviwe
ThePhantomSquee: this uh
Peo: I was gonna say, I don't remember this scene
ThePhantomSquee: doesn't seem to mesh with the show's ending
Dracobolt: Shhhh
Lachesis: Sure it does!
Reil: ikr
ThePhantomSquee: I guess we'll see momentarily
Dracobolt: Musical number!
Reil: 'momentarily'

Lachesis: Yes. "Momentarily."
ThePhantomSquee: what the *** is going on
Dracobolt: 8D
Lachesis: food party
Peo: They had Madoka figurines at the anime store, Draco.
Necare: that turkey looked like a zombie brain
Reil: POTLUCK
Lachesis: Also best girl
Lachesis: Hitching a ride
Lachesis: (walking is for plebs)
Peo: jesus
Peo: This is more 2deep4me than RahXephon
Peo: oh thank *** it's a dream
Peo: FOR NOW
ThePhantomSquee: ALL A DREAM
Reil: GOOD MORNING
Dracobolt: Anyone who's seen it, no spoilers or warning about what will come.
Dracobolt: I want to see their pure reactions.
Lachesis: [redacted]
Lachesis: [heavily redacted]
Necare: whoa that was dramatic
Peo: I was expecting her to be dead
Reil: Madoka's going to be short
Reil: forever
Reil: if her mom's any indication
Dracobolt: Her pops is tall, though. It'd mak funny future art for Madoka to tower over the ohers. XP
Necare: is Madoka voiced by a young male VA
Reil: wat
Dracobolt: wat
Reil: that's like the opposite of how things go in voice acting
Necare: it totally sounds like a young boy trying to sound like a girl
Necare: and yes I am aware of that
Dracobolt: lolllllllllllllllllll
Reil: are you sure
Necare: yes
Reil: you don't know very young eunuchs
ThePhantomSquee: my guess at the moment is that we're seeing yet another alternate timeline
Reil: and mistake them for boys
Necare: as far as you know
Dracobolt: yesssthe toast thing
Dracobolt: oh man the lyrics for the op
Reil: RUNNING WITH TOAST
Lachesis: Oh right Draco is host and therefore a few seconds ahead.
Reil: this one didn't sub the song
Dracobolt: whoops i am ahead
Dracobolt: i keep forgetting
Lachesis: A few seconds, yeah.
Dracobolt: It's so good.
Reil: WHY ARE YOU ENJOYING YOURSELVES
Dracobolt: hnnnngh sad feelings
Lachesis: But I do remember it throwing me off a lot when Chrono was streaming YU.
Reil: I AM HOMURA
Reil: EVERYBODY DANCE
Dracobolt: Is Homu angst a spoiler?
ThePhantomSquee: never
Lachesis: Being Homu is suffering, that's established.
Reil: HOMURA IS NOT DANCING
Peo: She looks like a shrimp compared to the rest of them
Peo: Is she just sitting
Reil: DO THE MONKEY
Lachesis: It would be a spoiler if she /didn't/ suffer.
Reil: The pot luck
Reil: was delicious
Necare: they cut to that ring like three times in five seconds
Dracobolt: It's Important.
Reil: they're trying to short-hand establish
Necare: yeah I got that
Reil: "This is a magical girl"
Lachesis: You'd know why, Necare
Lachesis: If you /watched the series/
Lachesis: why are you still here
Necare: maybe I will
Necare: it's on Netflix
Lachesis: you'll ruin everything for yourself
Reil: gtfo
Dracobolt: Necare pls
Necare: I just have other things to do
Necare: like play Dork Souls
Reil: then go do them
Reil: instead of spoiling Rebellion
Reil: :U
Dracobolt: I want to know your opinion on it, unsullied by spoilers or having to justify those opinions.
Lachesis: why hasn't he been kicked
Necare: I am omnipotent
ThePhantomSquee: lol mayan apocalypse
Dracobolt: Because I believe in free will and choice.
Dracobolt: Order and stability over desire.
Reil: Nakazawaaaa
Necare: wow this teacher is *** nuts
Reil: higher in popularity polls than kyousuke
Lachesis: Fine then, Necare can stay and spoil everything for himself
Dracobolt: Nakazawa best
Lachesis: Thereby invalidating every opinion on the series he might eventually have.
Dracobolt: Okay, Necare, bye-bye! 8D
ThePhantomSquee: yeah she's off her rocker
ThePhantomSquee: seriously wtf
Peo: Um. She's certainly a lot more expressive than I remember in the anime.
Necaree
Reil: lol
Dracobolt: Uh...
Reil: fail
ThePhantomSquee: INTRODUCING
ThePhantomSquee: THE WORST CHARACTER
Dracobolt: Moemura!
Reil: Homura 4 best character
Dracobolt: Okay, okay.
Dracobolt: The Phantom Squee stays quiet
Reil: FROZEN
Dracobolt: Let it go?
Dracobolt: Oh.
Dracobolt: Is it back?
Reil: naitomeaa

Quote:

playing now
Lachesis: we've entered an endless recursion in Mami already knowing
ThePhantomSquee: and pausing again
ThePhantomSquee: MAMI KNOWS
ThePhantomSquee: SHE HUNGERS
ThePhantomSquee: FOR KEKI
Dracobolt: Round cake?
Lachesis: "Cake"
Lachesis: Ohohoho [redacted]

Quote:

Lachesis: As demonstrated in ep 11, Homura. Attack power: Negligible.
ThePhantomSquee: also lol they sound like they're talking about RPG stats in this scene
Lachesis: (WPN cheats)
Reil: Is Sayaka their tank, then?
ThePhantomSquee: if she is she's a pretty *** tank
ThePhantomSquee: dying in every timeline
Dracobolt: doki doki
Reil: That's the tank's job
Reil: absorb all the damages
Lachesis: Mami is their ridiculous burst damage.
Lachesis: ...or possibly general DPS. Either way, she hits hard.
ThePhantomSquee: yes but they have to survive absorbing all that damage
ThePhantomSquee: clearly their healer is slacking
Reil: What's that make Kyouko? off-tank?

And then the rest is postponed because weather is making Draco's connection bad. RIP Draco's internet.

In lieu of actual log I give you my first words upon being added to meguca chat
