Given the Faust story basically says exactly that (don't be too ambitious, and especially don't be selfishly ambitious), I definitely don't think it's a girl thing exactly, moreso a general human thing. I like to think of the "only girls can be magical girls" as just a dumb/contrived in-universe justification for it being a magical girl show. muh writing flaws Either that, or as Kyle said teenage boys are taught to suppress their emotion instead by society, so you don't get the phase change from hope to despair that's necessary. |

Acceptable. Also, yes, I'm curious to see what you'd think of Rebellion, if you can force yourself through it.

Yeah, like, I fully support not liking Homura because she made a stupid wish/is obsessed unhealthily with Madoka/has no ability to cope with loss/etc. But the idea that she's inhibiting Madoka's free will (to an inappropriate extent) in the series is very, very clearly an extension of external information that's mean to be a development, not a constant. |

So from what I understand, you don't want him making conclusions that aren't true... yet. What is the difference? |

Primary differences between Wraiths and Witches are that wraiths aren't former magical girls, and that wraiths are inherently inferior in terms of harvest potential. And apparently trying to make sure someone doesn't do something stupid == removal of free will, lol. |

If Homura had really wanted to remove Madoka's free will, she would have taken Chrono's suggestion and just literally kidnapped the girl for a month. That would have solved things (although the town would still be [radio edit]ed). 8D

ITT people gettin' mad because I insulted their waifu So, concluding thoughts: Overall -Like most anime I've watched, the beginning and ending were pretty interesting, but it lagged a bit in the middle. -Also like most anime I've watched, the supporting characters were far more interesting than the main ones. -Music was good. Could've used a little more variety instead of using one or two pieces over and over again, but still an outstanding soundtrack. -Inconsistent levels of competence everywhere. Mami was the worst offender, but pretty much everybody got the idiot ball at some point. -Not so much deep as DEEP. Plot was enjoyable enough as a story about the merits of waiting until you have all the facts before committing to something, didn't really need the heavy-handed DESPAIR stuff imo. -Still, a pretty solid anime. Definitely not the revolutionary, life-changing masterpiece I've seen people play it up as, more your standard 2deep deconstruction. But still enjoyable enough. Madoka -Liked her more than I thought I would. -She was characterized pretty well as hiding a sharp mind under a stereotypical "bubbly airhead" exterior. -Definitely not seeing the "oh she does nothing but cry" argument. -Not particularly interesting to me, but still a good character. Mami -Not much to say, she wasn't really around long enough to get a good feel for her character outside of her assumed role as mentor. -I liked her design well enough. -Best transformation music, etc. Homura -Controlling, emotionally manipulative stalker. -I have very little sympathy for her. -Fell in love with a Madoka she hardly knew, put that Madoka on a pedestal, and tried to groom subsequent Madokas into being just like her idealized version. -I'm reminded of a phrase somebody used to describe Vriska, but applies here as well: "The purpose of her character is to do precisely what is necessary, for all the wrong reasons, in the worst manner possible." - ![]() -deal with it waifufuzzy little man-peachs Kyouko -Obviously played up as an asshole from the start, so I wasn't very well-inclined toward her. -Her development was actually pretty logical and organic. -I definitely got the impression of somebody who claims to be over their past hardships, but puts up a tough front because she's really not over it. -Still didn't like her much for most of her presence. -Died of bullshit right when she was starting to get cool. -Seriously, I could maybe have bought it as a redemption thing if her relationship with Sayaka had had a few more episodes to develop, but as presented it just came across as her dooming everyone to death by Walpurgisnacht for poorly-established reasons. Sayaka -HERO OF JUSTICE/10 -For real though, she was probably the most interesting. -Too bad she can't catch a break even in a universe without witches. -Seriously, too paladin for her own good. -Managed to stay interesting and pretty complex even when it looked like she was going to turn into a caricature. Now, to see if I can find somewhere to watch Rebellion. |

Squee, I will undertake the dreadful inconvenience of streaming Rebellion for you if I absolutely must. It will be a tiresome exercise, but I'll suffer through watching it for a fifth time if you need me to. 8D
