Okay, so, here's an idea I've had for a while; since before I rejoined, actually. What if we added certain subforums to the Games forum? Of course, this would only work for games the Temple has a large fanbase for; for example, it's no secret that the Temple's Pokemon and Fire Emblem fanbases are gargantuan. The reason I feel subforums would be worthwhile is because it would allow for more in-depth and focus discussion on specific aspects of the subforum subjects. At present we have a number of generic threads for Pokemon and Fire Emblem, but that's not really conducive to focused discussion on particular aspects of the subject, since over time posts get buried as the topic gets larger and larger, others chip in with their own ideas for discussions and sometimes the topics get derailed altogether. There's a whole ton of possibilities subforums would open up; no one wants the general Games forum flooded with "What's your favourite Pokemon?" or "Your top 5 favourite songs in [game]?" or "Rate this Unit!" or "Most difficult game/map in the series" and all sorts of other things like that. But in subforums, that sort of focused discussion would work. I understand that there are potential problems with subforums, as well. Activity is a potential issue (though I would do everything I could to help keep them afloat; believe me, I'm only too eager to focused discussion!), and I appreciate that if the most recently bumped topic even in a subforum will appear on the site's front page, which could be confusing for some, especially at first. But I still personally think that it would be something worth trying out. Subforums I think would work well at the Temple would be Pokemon and Fire Emblem ones, as I mentioned, and perhaps a Super Smash Bros. one. This is based on my observations as to the size of each fandom present on the Temple; if anyone else has a good idea for a subforum that would also work well on the Temple, feel free to post it. So yeah, just a suggestion. What do you guys think of the possibility of gaming subforums being added to the Temple? |

Feel free to add a poll to test Temple opinion after we've had some discussion, Raven. ^^; This has been raised before, and my main concern still remains: where do we draw the line? I'm sure there are plenty of arguments that could be made for a multitude of forums, as you pointed out. The other thing is that every subforum we add pushes the topic list for Games itself further down the page. So does that in a way reduce the visibility of all the other topics, if we have say, four or five subforums?* *I think, though, we can solve this by creating just one subforum in Games, called like, Specialty Games, that only acts as an index of all the subforums (no posting in the Specialty forum allowed). That way, we can have as many focused forums as we want, but Games general only has one subforum to scroll past -- but all the other forums can still be accessed through that games general page. We did have this problem with separate Music, Art, Literature, Television, and other subforums before. I'm convinced that we can make it work without clutter, though. On the flip side, it means that the specialty forums won't be accessible from the index. Which might be a good thing? If it means that the Games forum itself will still see consistent traffic. |

*pushes glasses up her nose* According to my research, we used to have something like this implemented at the Temple. Please refer to this topic to read up on Communal Forums, which were disbanded a few years later. We're not opposed to trying something along these lines again. The Temple is bigger and more active now, and it wasn't like the last attempt ended in tears. Still, before we make the infrastructure changes, we're going to need a little more discussion. So! Can you give us some evidence that these specialty forums will see use? More users chiming in would go a long way to convincing us. Even more helpful would be to start diversifying your topic-making immediately and showing that more specific discussions would indeed promote active posting. If you (anyone, really) have a specific specialty subforum you'd like to see, we recommend maintaining a list of supporters. Basically, think of it like a GameFAQs petition. Get around 10-15 supporters for a forum, people who pledge that they will likely actively post there, and then we can heavily consider adding it. ALSO this doesn't have to be just games subforums, since Satty hit on a system to keep things from getting cluttered, so if you have other things you'd like to have a subforum, make a petition list for it too. (Disclaimer: We haven't officially promised to add anything; this is mainly enthusiastic interest-gauging.)

[6:58:32 PM] Schrodinger's Leaf: hm, I wouldn't be opposed, and I can see there being merit in such a thing, although I don't personally post often enough in those threads to be a major contributor [6:58:45 PM] Schrodinger's Leaf: in short, "aye," but not signing any petitions [6:58:49 PM] Schrodinger's Leaf: =p |

Games forum is really not especially active as it is. If you want to better organize the threads for big-name series that have multiple threads being created, just make a sticky topic and link them there. |

Indeed. Before I can give my full support as staff to added subforums, I would want to see more topics being created to show that people are invested enough in what they're discussing to make those topics.

Yeah, honestly, this is one of those cases where I think further segmentation only makes the forum more cumbersome to navigate. At the moment, I say nay, but if activity increases to actually warrant these, my opinion could change. |

I don't think the discussion topics for any of these, except maybe Pokemon, are so active that it's impossible to keep up with the conversation, and if a specific line of discussion within that thread doesn't get many responses, it's probably just because few people had anything to say about it in the first place. I know I've made plenty of threads that get 0-2 replies at most, even ones I put some effort into. |

Alright, what I'll do for now, then, is make a poll for a Pokemon subforum. To begin with, I think a Pokemon subforum would probably be the best to test the waters; Pokemon's fanbase here is huge, and if there's any subforum that would garner success, that'd probably be it. It'd be a good way to run it as a test of sorts; only one subforum to begin with, one that caters to a very large portion of the Temple, and one that opens itself to a huge potential variety of discussion. |

Raven, you could just add the poll to this topic. >.> Would you like me to do that, and delete the other topic? Or if you can do it yourself, it's the append a poll button at the top right of your first post. Also, echoing Draco's suggestion of "make the topics in Games you would if there were a private Pokemon forum." It's going to clutter up Games a bit, but if it does prove to be cluttering, that enough would be proof that an exclusive Pokemon forum would work. We can also gauge their activity and see how long they'd survive for. |

Ah, alright... I though its own topic would be better due to discrepancy between the Poll and OP contents, but if you feel that would be best, then that's fine |
