please DO NOT post screamers or jump-scares, ask people out as a joke, come out as a joke, or harass employees anywhere if you need to riase hell, link some rickrolls or cover someones room in sticky notes. Please be a decent human being this April Fools |

Aw man, there goes my plan to harass same-sex employees by asking them out and then screaming in their face when they awkwardly turn me down.

This happened to a friend of mine. She thought it was an April Fool's joke, it was pretty awkward. |

baha aevis I wasn't really going to do anything for April Fool's. Once I successfully tricked my brother into thinking I'd run into our music teacher while on vacation, so now every year one of us says something like DUDE I SAW MRS. TEACHER at wherever we are that year. |

For real though, I can see why some of these would be distasteful, but coming out as a joke? What's wrong with that? |

If I'm understanding that right as coming out as homosexual or some other not-heterosexual sexuality, eh, yeah, I really dislike it when people do that. To me that just reads kinda like, hey, so it's easy to joke about being gay or any other queer umbrella identity without having to deal with all the shit that may come with that, and it makes me feel like, Oh, well we can joke about this because it's not really a real thing that people are and live as. I know that's not the intention but those kinds of jokes even on Facebook, when you get "Facebook hacked" and somebody goes, "I like dicks" on a heterosexual man's status, it's making fun of being gay. Why else would it be a joke, why else would it be construed as a funny prank? Because it's something that that person isn't and, implication, wouldn't want to be. Cue all the, "I'm actually straight guys, this was a hack" or "no homo" jokes. It just contributes to the whole gay = insult culture, and coming out as gay (when you aren't, and as an April Fools prank) is also kind of buying into that, to me. |

That... sounds like quite a stretch to me, because the same train of logic could tell me that, for instance, dressing up as Mickey Mouse for Halloween is bad because it implies that you wouldn't want to dress up as him normally, leading to the conclusion that mice are bad. I mean I wasn't planning on doing anything like that anyway, so it's not like this is a thing that really affects me. It just seems, I dunno, kind of hypersensitive? |

Probably because she's suggesting that we avoid the specified actions for April Fool's day. I mean I guess I could see putting it in Announcements, but I tend to side-eye threads in that forum made by non-staff, so this is probably better. |

Yes that is what I meant in putting it here. People like be can be shaken for quite some time after a screamer. The first time it happened I was 14 and wouldn't be in a room with that computer for a few weeks. It's funny to some of us, very upsetting to others. |

I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to say. No one's discriminated against for being a mouse. People are discriminated against for being queer. I gotta go with Sundancer on this one. I had an idea for a prank, but I kept forgetting about it and now I don't think I'll be able to pull it off. Let this be a lesson to you, kids. :( |

This is what I mean. It's not the same thing as the mouse example because mice... people... people dressed as mice? aren't discriminated against or marginalized in mainstream society in a systemic way. I haven't experienced much discrimination personally in the time that I've been out but I also know people who have, and either way we have a problem with those jokes. It doesn't mean I'm gonna instantly freak out at anybody who cracks a gay joke, but I do find it uncomfortable and I'll voice that, I don't think that's hypersensitivity. And even... that kind of humour at the expense of others -- there are lots of jokes out there, and ways to make jokes about being queer or queer things that aren't microaggressive and don't necessarily create a sense of exclusion. I also don't know about your orientation and I don't wish to comment on that, but I think in these cases it's important to listen to people who are -of- a marginalized identity and don't get to take it off as the ending of a joke after April Fools' is done. Not everybody will agree but at least that conversation is had by those who are most directly affected in some way or form. |
