Awww yeah, spent like five and a half hours playing yesterday, mostly trolling around the Hinterlands. It's super fun, and I'm also playing on casual because well, I am a filthy casual. I might flip back to normal at some point.

There was still this one rift that was absolutely ravaging me even on casual. Like I had no reason to think it was extra hard, but then BOOM suddenly three despair demons and a crapton of those shrieking grasshopper things. Rekt so hard

One reason I enjoy Dragon Age sidequests a lot more than say, Skyrim quests, is that they feel better integrated into the narrative. Whereas Skyrim was like "give me 10 bear pelts," Inquisition has "I need ram meat, otherwise a lot of people in this refugee camp might starve to death." So the "fetch quests" are integrated as consequences of the main plot (Mages and templars at war, therefore these people are displaced, and as part of building your influence/being a good person you should help them out.) I also like the little micro-narratives, or stories hinted at offscreen. Like the mage-templar lover duo.
I was pleasantly surprised when one of my offers to join the Inquisition was rebuffed. I'm glad people have minds of their own.

I wonder if he uses "herbs" before dreaming about the Fade.

I bring Solas with me everywhere I go, actually. Not the most colorful character, but I like where his mind is at, lore-wise. Always very interesting to learn more about the nature of the Fade. Plus, Barrier has saved my ass so many times, especially since I'm playing on hard mode, which often necessitates two mages for that purpose.

Sera is a little shit. She can be amusing at times, but I'm ever so tempted to tell her to gtfo of my inquisition. Too much concentrated Fereldan for my tastes.

All of the other characters range from good to awesome. Cassandra is probably my favorite so far, surprisingly, next to Solas. The exception is Iron Bull, who I've been quite disappointed with so far. He may as well be a human in Qunari cosplay. The way he speak about Qunari culture is so unconvincing. I suppose I miss the deadpan delivery of characters like Sten and the Arishok. But then, I'm still very early on and I probably haven't even scratched the surface of his character.

A took a shitty cell phone picture of my Inquisitor to show you folks. [radio edit]ed up the eyelashes in character-creation, but it works anyway.

Ilyasviel did nothing wrong

She looks completely trustworthy. Also, that's some hardcore Vallaslin.

I've advanced the story a little bit more and I'm very much digging it. I am exceedingly pleased with the characters introduced in the last quest I completed. I'm starting to get somewhat of a Mass Effect vibe, though, and I'm not entirely sure I like that. I was never a fan of Shepard's messianic status in that series (nor Shepard as a character, especially in 3), and I'm definitely seeing shades of that in the Inquisitor. Which is annoying, but at least it can be mitigated in non-story conversations.

Also this happened:

Solas romance initiation

The scene turned me into a blubbering mess of feels. Sorry, Josephine.

Not really surprising, seeing as this is an integral part of the game =P The difference is, as you said, the way you respond to it.

True, Arty. And I've enjoyed the story so far because of it. Or maybe in spite of it? I dislike "chosen one" stories, but this has exceeded my expectations so far.

It's mostly an issue with how I want to characterize my own Inquisitor, I suppose. You can only play the "I'm a fish out of water, help I don't know what I'm doing!" card for so long.

But yeah, as long as you're given ample characterization options within that "messiah" constraint, it's not so bad. I specifically singled out ME3 because for me, it seemed like all responses you could choose for Shepard were just slight variations on the same "war is hell" sentiment. His/her character felt set in stone. You were just making the major decisions. DA always felt more open in terms of how you could shape your character's personality. I like the story so far, but I'm just worried that those options will dwindle as the game goes on.

@Ulta: It's probably the most beautiful game I've ever played. Really gorgeous. Bioware outdid themselves here.

Well, in almost any RPG, you're going to always be a Chosen One, to an extent. That's how tales of heroism work, and they're the foundation of any game that sets you up as a savior, whether you're born, grown, or thrust. :eyebrow: A game with themes like Dragon Age that doesn't make the player a chosen hero of some kind either has to be out of the ordinary, or fall flat on its face. It is a game, after all, and not a work of literature. There's a hard limit to what can be done with its story.

Dragon Age Origins and Dragon Age 2 both have essentially the same heroic storyline with their main characters: The Warden suddenly finds himself in the midst of a situation where he or she has to rise to the occasion, and Hawke stumbles into Championhood while just trying to survive. Both of them become messianic figures. The difference is that in Inquisition you start as a symbol from the very beginning, and it's a slight subversion on the trope anyway - I would talk about it a bit more, but I'm not sure how far you've gotten into the story.

As for how you're limited in responding to the situation the character is placed in, it's inevitable. The story needs a framework to operate within, otherwise nothing would make sense, and you'd end up unable to move forward. Essentially, I see the basis of the story in Inquisition as a skeleton for the rest of it to exist around. I understand what you mean, though, and I wish there were slightly more variation in story in games, but I guess I'm used to it. It's not the main story that I care the most about - it's a game, and the world has to be saved, after all; it's just a question of if you can and how - but the smaller stories within it. That's where the best writing comes through.

I flirted with everyone. It was beautiful, until I ended up having to break up with someone I never agreed to date before I could commit to my intended romance :I It was like origins all over again, where I accidentally romanced Leliana just because I wanted to talk to her about shoes ;-;

Don't you hate it when you just wanted to talk about shoes and people act like you're married?

That happened with me and Ashley in ME1. Mega awks.

I did a lot of flirting with Cassandra, incidentally, and I was wondering if or when the "hey, I'm not interested, gtfo" dialogue would occur. Maybe I should put off pursuing the Solas romance until then, because seeing my Inquisitor get rejected and heartbroken is top priority.

I stared at this for half a minute before I realized it was something I should probably Google.

And thanks. :awe:

In regards to In Hushed Whispers

I've made it past the main quest which comes after that and am currently at a loss as to where to go. And I love it.
