A lot of Kirito's apparent mistakes are inconsequential to the big picture; they only exist to make him seem realistic. But, they do get reeaaaaaal close to being legitimate. So close. The guild incident from episode 3, for one. Kirito obviously feels guilt about being involved with their demise, but the problem is how much blame he allocates to himself. Having guilt is fine. What's not fine in this case is Kirito reasoning that his guild was smart enough to avoid this situation, which they weren't. He DID warn them on time, and they ignored all of his warnings. Yet Kirito still feels as if it's completely his fault that they died. There's a disconnect between how he feels and what actually happened, to a point that the whole thing feels like a cheap source of angst for Kirito to maintain his dark and edgy status. and oh man episode 9 ha ha ha oh wow you guys are gonna love this one

See, I don't get the feeling out of Kirito. He's plenty strong. Strong enough to warrant lying about his level and his Beater status. Even if he actually wasn't strong enough to save his guildmates, the crux of the issue is that he regrets not warning them fast enough. Yet what I'm getting out of the entire thing is that these people died not because of Kirito's power level but because they were [radio edit]ing stupid. And if this particular event is what fuels Kirito's trepidations towards guilds, it only adds to his "waah I'm too strong for my own good" character. Thereby cheapening his guilt.

Ive made my way through the first half, i just need to go back for screenshots and regret. I should have episodes 9-12 done for the next few days. If you want my immediate opinion, well, i thought it was okay. I didnt notice that Yuki Kaijura did the soundtrack until episode 9, so that was a minor plus. The backgrounds were really nice. Everything else though. Oh man, everything else. Ill just leave that for the episode posts.

True Name: simplechild	Episode 9: The Blue-Eyed Demon - I guess it's a bit too late to hope that they are fix the subtitles. - I like that the most intimidating indicator of a boss's power is its numerous health bars, like we're playing Kingdom Hearts or some shit. - Monsters so scary they domesticate strong female characters. - The camera is spinning as they're running away. Wholly off-color and betrays to us too early that they actually get away. - So instead of stopping right outside the boss door, we retreat all the way to some other nondescript area of the dungeon. - Oh man Kirito, [rainbow]Perfect Waifu[/rainbow] calling you out on your "single sword, no shield" bullshit. And he hasn't even been letting Lisbeth polish his sword, if you know what I mean. - I don't understand Kirito's hesitation on the subject. It'll get revealed eventually, I'll bet. - I know this isn't actually the case between Asuna and Kirito but the mere concept of a woman making sandwiches for her man has so much stigma attached to it that I just can't not draw attention to the fact that I'm a terrible person and. - Is there even a term for someone who poopsocks a cooking videogame? - Asuna has a lot of time on her hands for being Vice-Commander of one of the largest guilds in SAO. - Eh, I think you make them regardless. - Oh look, a player entered the area. Better glare cautiously and prepare to draw your sword! - It's just Klein. How the [radio edit] do you not know who this person is, Kirito. - He STILL feels guilty about not joining Klein's party? It's been two [radio edit]ing years, man. - God Klein, don't make it gay. - God Kirito, don't make it gay. - I like that a zerg guild manages to amass similar-themed equipment for their entire army. I'd think that would eventually be unfeasible as it gets harder and harder to acquire materials. - I like how Kirito is the only one to actually introduce himself to the guild when the leader introduces himself. Also, look at all those derp faces. - Looks like he wants the map data for the area. There is only one reason why he would ask that: the location of the boss room. That's really dumb. - Kirito being a decent person for a moment. - "I'm not the kind to trade map data," Perhaps not, but you are the sort of person to enable your [rainbow]Perfect Waifu[/rainbow]'s hooky antics. - Ah yes I see. This zerg guild leader shall be the next in the line of "Kirito is smarter than dumb people" right after Kuradeel. - Oh my god please. It's bad enough that the person with the "old man" ideals is actually an older man, but this is both the kind of stupidity and ignorance that should never have made it to the highest played level insofar. - Klein talks to Asuna as if he were Kirito's goddamn mother. I mean, look at this. He is trying so hard to make this gay. - WELL WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAT. - Teleport crystals don't work? Time for flashbacks from my most favoritest episode ever! - Let's talk about this a bit more. I count at least four times where Kirito has to prove himself stronger/smarter than his opposition: Rosalia in episode 4, Grimlock in episode 5, Kuradeel in episode 8, and this zerg commander in this moment. I'm not really saying that Kirito should be wrong for once (though I'd like that to happen), but the show reinforces Kirito's position of power by making his enemies so outlandishly evil/stupid to the point of disillusionment. The thought stuck in my head right now is that Kirito is only strong because his opposition is both objectively wrong AND significantly weaker than him. Is that in itself wrong? Not really. Insetad, It's the sheer transparency of the Kirito is Righteous circlejerk that bothers me. - Where the hell is this minotaur aiming. Everytime he swings that thing the mooks are heavily implied to be hit but are never really shown to actually get hit. - How did he get flung over there - Wait, it's Asuna that gets bowled over by these people dying? If anything, Kirito should be reacting like this first because of his TRAGIC BACKSTORY. I am given no indication as to why Asuna would go full bishoujo sparkles over some faceless mooks. - As if to agree with me, the minotaur punches her misplaced righteousness right in the righteousness. - Is this the thing Kirito was keeping silent about? Is there a particular reason to hide strength at such a high-level dungeon? - Again, we see flashbacks. I get it. This particular battle is Kirito's chance to redeem himself for what happened to his guild. If he hides his hidden weapon here, it'll be similar to how he hid his level from his former guildmates and that may result in a similar catastrophe. There's very little correlation between the two instances, really, but it can be made into a legitimate excuse to redeem himself. And I can buy that. - Man, the amount of derps in this episode alone is amazing. - DUAL WIELDING. TWO YEARS INTO THIS [radio edit]ING GAME AND NO ONE SEEMS TO KNOW HOW TO DUAL WIELD EXCEPT FOR KIRITO. ISN'T HE SO SPECIAL? - STAR BURST STREAM OH MY GOD HE EVEN HAS SPECIAL NAMES FOR HIS SPECIAL MOVES. SOMEONE KILL ME PLEASE. - OH COME ON HE'S NOT EVEN HOLDING ONTO HIS SWORDS. - This particular sequence perfectly encapsulates how RPGs tend to overload on the slash particles to the point of obscuring everything that is going on. - I do appreciate the bare-minimum variety of ways they show the boss deaths, even though they all end in exploding sparkles. - Here's my take on this whole scene. Kirito was able to save the rest of the zerg guild because he both was willing to risk his life for others and reveal his secret weapon. This signifies that 1. He's no longer afraid of hiding his strength and 2. saving the others meant his sacrifice was worth it. I can dig this. Even if the original episodes was poorly constructed, it served as an anchor for this particular development to gain additional traction. Namely, Kirito was finally able to conquer his long-standing fear of "putting himself out there". I just find it funny that his secret weapon has to be Dual Wielding, of all things. - Oh? Waking up to your [rainbow]Perfect Waifu[/rainbow] crying over your body as your head rests on her lap? Are we doing this, SAO? - Oh. He wasn't resting his head on her lap. - Oh. That's actually worse. - So yeah, despite all the positive things I said about Kirito's personal redemption, it only happened because other people were being [radio edit]ing idiots. - Also how the [radio edit] did these degenerates even make it to the 74th floor of all places? With morale like that I'd have to wonder if this Zerg guild even knows that it's doing. - omg kirito how did u do 2 swod - YOU KNOW I WAS KIDDING ABOUT DUAL WIELDING BEING SPECIALIZED TOWARDS KIRITO ONLY BUT IT'S ACTUALLY TRUE. I MAY BE BULIMIC BY THIS POINT - God Klein, don't make it gay. - Asuna, you've barely known the guy for six months. I'm sure there's plenty of things to do if Kirito were to die. - Asuna then mentions taking leave from the guild. Why, you ask? Do I even have to tell you at this point? - The moment Kirito realizes that Asuna is quite possibly maybe in love with him, we hear the usual chimes strings combo Yuki Kaijura likes to do in literally everything she does, which then leads into my realization that the music was being composed by Yuki Kaijura all this time. I like the execution even if I can recognize the music from a mile away. - Kirito cites his reason for hiding his OP DUAL WIELDING is that people would not stop bothering him about it. I guess that's a legitimate reason? He certainly prefers that to letting a bunch of people die in a boss room, and I commend him for making the right decision. - I see that piling some modest praise on this episode rewards me with literally the best girl getting some screentime. - I'm sorry, I think of the cat when I see this guy. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I'm actually not sorry. I'm so sorry. - Oh, NOW it's an issue. Apparently the original issue of Asuna playing hooky with a solo player has been handwaived for this new development. - it ok bb u don ned 2 say enythin to da bad man EVEN IF SHE'S THE VICE COMMANDER OF HIS GUILD OH MY LORD CAN SHE GET ANY MORE PASSIVE. - AND SHE'S LETTING THESE TWO ASSHOLES FIGHT OVER HER. I wish I was done with this show but I have all the screenshots lined up all the way to episode 14 and oh my god why.
