Normally, I'd say "Jesus Christ", but... I don't think he had anything to do with this. |

Ahahahaha Is this the real life? I have never laughed so hard at something that was supposed to be erotic, not even F/SN. And you're telling me this is canon? |

Canonocity of it is debated since that chapter was never actually published in physical form even if it is by the actual author. But basically, yes. |

Twelve episodes left. One more if you're concerned about the SAO arc. The second arc, ALO, is where most of the interweb shitstorm congregates. We haven't even touched that yet. Prepare your diddlyhole. |

Who was it here that said yui is the worst part about this show? I sincerely disagree. I found yui a likable character, even if she felt incredibly shoehorned in and in need of a lot more time than "a couple episodes" to develop any real emotional attachment. If you want to see the real cancer killing SAO, wait till the second arc. Kirito's sister is literally the worst girl ever. |

Yui shouldn't exist. Not in the first arc. Spoiler: click to toggle She's the worst kind of Deus ex Machina. Kirito's sister is pretty much the 'best' girl in the show. Spoiler: click to toggle

bah. I think the whole first arc was great... until they turned it into an anime that chronologically included a crap load of side-stories with awful overall pacing. XD |

My main issue with Sword Art Online, as I've iterated before, is the narrative's tendency to prove Kirito right in all occasions. But it's a bit deeper than that. Most stories operate in the complete opposite direction, with the main character being shaped by the world they live in. Development occurs when perceptions change and understanding is achieved, propelling them to act upon those changes and validate the time spent changing. That's how I'm used to seeing stories develop over time. However, Sword Art Online chooses to mold its world around Kirito, or more specifically Kirito's dark and edgy lv. 9001 Black Swordsman persona. As a reigning figure in the SAO universe, he has to maintain his position of power by 1. being the most powerful, 2. being morally correct, and 3. expending the minimum amount of energy to prove that he's strong. So the story bends to accommodate and support that image. That in itself is not the problem. The same thing happens in Samurai Flamenco and I find that show to actually be good. What really differentiates those two works is how conspicuously you go about molding their respective universes. In SAO's case, it's anything but subtle. Not only are opponents weaker than Kirito, they're also so morally out of line that they serve as living strawmen for Kirito to strip down as he pleases. That kind of thing only works once, perhaps early on, in order to establish how strong Kirito is. But SAO doesn't stop there. Each successive piece of opposition Kirito faces either has to be outdone in power, stripped down of its comically evil mentality, or at some points both at the same time. Power fantasies are so unrealistic that the story itself has to build around why the main character is so overpowered. The problem with SAO is that it treats is power fantasy, and Kirito himself, normally. As if he were a realistic character. And that's complete bullshit. There are no long-lasting or permanent consequences to Kirito's power creep, and the few attempts the story makes to make him seem realistic manifest as cheap moments of angst to make him look cool. The measures SAO takes for Kirito to remain relevant to the story, the sheer lengths this story bends over backwards for his sake, are so obvious and tryhard that it invalidates his worth as a compelling character. He's not this poor, socially awkward, yet powerful kid who never fails to get his precious friends into trouble, as he seems convinced to identify himself as. Instead, he's a man of no long-lasting faults. Any chances of invalidating his stance as the morally righteous powerhouse of SAO is met by eschewing your ideals and power level to the point of being completely out of line. The SAO universe, in at least the narrative sense, revolves around Kirito. Tell me this isn't a textbook definition of a Gary Stu. |

The strange thing is, upon ending the SAO arc, we learn Spoiler: click to toggle I found that scene to be among the most interesting in SAO, because it's the first time kirito is actually brought into line. |
