Allow me to preface this with a few things about me:

1. I do not play MMORPGs. As such, I may not be able to appreciate and/or be responsive to the anime's attempts to seem like a plausible MMORPG. What I will be focusing on, instead, is the main characters and the story. Much like any other little [radio edit] who sees themselves as above casual anime viewing.
2. While I've heard of the numerous online shitstorms that happened during SAO's airtime, I'm not privy to all the details. Additionally, as much as I am cautious of overwhelming positive feedback, overwhelming negative feedback can also be a misleading notion. SAO, to my knowledge, has its fair share of both.

Anyways.

We're getting this party started.

Episode 1: The World of Swords

All in all, it wasn't bad. It also wasn't amazing. People usually vilify the second half of the show, anyways, so I'm not expecting anything terrible right off the bat. I just want to see if the first half is up to snuff. I can see the potential, in that case.

I'm going to be watching more episodes when I have the time, using this format. I may end up bunching episodes together for the sake of completion if I end up slacking too much.

You should watch alongside him. These reviews are hilarious, but it's no substitute for actually watching.

I do find it quite amusing that SAO was brought up recently in touhou chat, and now simple is watching it, who isn't even in there.

SAO is overrated, but neither is it crap in my opinion.

Those that take the middle ground are rare it seems.

SOA's anime is indeed overrated, but I'd say the SAO light novels are underrated. Or rather, no one really wants to read them because OH LOOK AN ANIME!

The first OP song is awesome. The OPs and EDs are one of the good things about SAO in my opinion.

Episode 2: Beater

I think this arc could have used another episode for depth. I'm not asking for the same amount of depth as, say, the LNs or this superior adaptation, but there were elements that required me to assume things of Kirito that the story has not proven prior to this arc. I have no clue what Kirito's priorities are when it comes to SAO. It's clear that he values the virtual world and his skill as a player, but to what worth does he hold other players to? I'm getting a "lone wolf" feel out of him, but he cares too much about people he barely knows and does too much for them for that to really be true. But the way this episode is structured doesn't let me see in between the lines. The incoherency of his character, at this moment, doesn't work. Feel free to correct me on this, though. I may just be biased because I have knowledge of the way that the manga adaptation expands further on this arc. I just wish the story put more time into it.

>utilizing time well
>MMOs

simple MMOs are about being a big time sink since if people could beat them quickly they'd stop playing

I'll just chalk it up to my inexperience with MMOs. pls discpline me goshujinsama

I guess my real question would be: what makes SAO a timesink? Resources are limited, so you can't grind exp. I'm guessing quests aren't unlimited either because of their rewards. If so, tangible incremental progress isn't what keeps people playing, and certainly isn't the reason why people would take their time to complete the game. Hell, the concept of an assuredly hard-to-find boss room seems a bit insulting to the most dedicated of players.

Arguably, the most sensible answer is that SAO is first and foremost an almost-perfect virtual reality. People may stick around just because they prefer to. Yet I'm not seeing a lot of depth in that department, so I assumed there was a more gameplay-based reason why SAO would be considered as much of a timesink as real MMOs, despite everything it does to coerce people to progress through the floors.

@peo The "she's a girl" thing was made apparent by Kirito himself early on. It's just that the anime seemed to think that her reveal needed as many sparkles as possible for dramatic effect. such bijin.
