That's a good point. But anime arguments always seem to be super heated and if you don't understand what they're talking about it is like a different language. But I digress, asoiaf ftw |

That doesn't explain why this anime encapsulates everything bad about anime. Please explain to me why this anime encapsulates everything bad about anime. |

Episodes 5-7 Let me try retelling a few classic and familiar stories using Madoka's personality to replace that of the usual protagonist: Little Red Riding Hood Once upon a time there was a girl who lived in a cottage in the forest. Her name was Little Red Riding Hood. She had a grandmother, whom she loved very much, who lived across the forest. Every day, Grandmother needed help with the cleaning and cooking, as she was very frail and fragile. But instead of helping her Grandmother, Red Riding Hood cried like a little bitch the entire day and made impassioned speeches to her sister, which would always end in Red Riding Hood staring into the middle distance and uttering her sister's name. Grandmother had to be taken care of by somebody else, and Red Riding Hood never did anything useful with her life, ever. The end. The Quest for the Holy Grail During the Feast of Michaelmas, a Holy Man came in from the Wood. He was garbed in the hair of a goat, and was very old and wise. Seeing him, the guards let the man in at once, as he was clearly sent by God to deliver a message. As soon as he entered the feasting hall, the lights dimmed, and it appeareth to all that the countenance of the Holy Man shone brighter than the sun. A fragrant smell filled the room. "King Arthur, and all the Knights of the Round Table," spake he. "You have brought peace to England, but only your heroism and prowess of arms. Seek Holy Relics of our sweet Lord Jesu; then shall you rule with the blessings and smile of God Almighty. Amen." Then the lights returned, and the Holy Man was nowhere to be found. "Upon my oath, this is a miracle!" exclaimed King Arthur. "Saddle up the horses at once, and bring back all possible items from the Holy Land, that we may rule fairly and justly under the banner of God." But he needn't have even said so, for as soon as the Holy Man had disappeared, every knight to a man present had left his meat and packed his armor. "I shall be the one to find the most relics! Perhaps I shall even find the Grail!" boasted Sir Gawaine, and he rode off on his charger with his Squire in his wake. "Nay," disagreed Sir Palomides, Saracen as he was, "I shall be shriven every day upon this, the most Holy of Quests, and I shall find the Grail!" And he, too, galloped off into the night. But Sir Launcelot was dismayed, and wept bitterly for no goddamned reason. The end. Golden Sun "So," asked the Mayor gravely, "will you accept this - the fate of the world in your hands?" Dora cried out. "They are too young to be asked such a thing!" "That is for the Wise One to decide," spoke the Great Healer. And he looked into their eyes intently, silently asking them. >No. And so the world began drifting towards its destruction... [title screen] Wow, now I can write for this anime too! Wheee! No, seriously, this anime was named incorrectly. I'm over halfway done with it, and the main character hasn't even undergone any development. She has literally been crying and getting people into trouble the entire time. If it seems like I'm putting a lot of emphasis on this, it's because I am. Sayaka is the more interesting character. Sayaka has had more bad things happen to her. Sayaka has had more dialogue. Sayaka has interacted with more diverse characters. Sayaka has had more action sequences. Sayaka is the Magical Girl. Madoka is having mommy-daughter talks about alcohol and trying her best to kill her friends. Meanwhile, she is still delivering tearful soliloquies to Homura, who has the patience of a saint. I'd also like to take a step back for a moment. Could we all agree that ending a scene by saying a character's name in a heartfelt manner and doing a close-up of the face with dewy eyes and a quivering lip is really [radio edit]ing overused in this stale genre in which you are all so steeped? My God, I should start a charity. Each time an anime uses this method to end a scene, I donate $100 to medicinal research. By the end of half a season, I'll have cured [radio edit]ing cancer 12 times over and started on HIV. I don't know what Girl Eating Food is called. I'm sure she has a name, but I'm going call her Jenna with Teeth, because that's who she is. I mean, just look at her. She's got those gnawers and she looks exactly like Jenna. I'm pleased with how she's turned out. The way she was introduced, I expected her to be a mid-dungeon boss that was around for an episode or two, then was written off in a violent death. She, too, is a more interesting character than Madoka. In particular, I liked that they tied her into Japanese Christianity, which is a wonderfully interesting topic. The Church was brought to Japan by Jesuits, where it flourished, against all odds. The Church was driven underground, where it barely clung to life and acquired a good many local flavors. When it reemerged, it was still clearly Christianity, but seen through a uniquely Japanese lens. The way Japan treats the Church fascinates me. For a subset of Eastern culture to embrace so enthusiastically a relatively Western style of thought is a neat anomaly to see. Anyway, back to the animu. I'm still bothered by it. The main character is a complete piece of shit, and I wish she didn't have any screen time, ever. It's basically how I felt whenever I saw Frodo's face in Return of the King. Everybody knows that people watched that movie for Aragorn, Gandalf, Gimli, Legolas - not for Frodo and Sam. Similarly, my interest is being held in this anime not by Madoka, but by Sayaka, Homura, and Jenna with Teeth. Kyubey is finally becoming interesting too, I note. I still think it is overhyped, mind you. I've been skirting around the question of music, because I wanted to get a better idea of what I wanted to say. I think I'm ready to do that now. The style of music in anime strikes me as being more along the lines of musique d’ameublement. That Wikipedia article does a poor job of explaining what musique d’ameublement is. It's basically the idea that the music being played is not really important to what is actually going on; that it's rather a backdrop in the room, and something that is not meant to be actively noticed, much like furniture in an ornamental sitting-room. For somebody like me, I can accept that. One of my favorite composers, Erik Satie, was really big into musique d’ameublement. The difference between his music and the music that I'm hearing in the anime is that his music was actually good. Here is my proof on the matter. There appears to be themes and motifs that are present in discrete episodes and arcs, but I'm not getting a lot of unity between episodes on the music front. I don't know, the soundtrack seems like a disjointed and half-assed effort to me. I'm not impressed, but since I feel that I'm not meant to be impressed by it, I don't mind, on an intellectual level. Looking forward, I continue to anticipate Sayaka's death, and now I predict that it will be the catalyst in Madoka's becoming a Magical Girl herself. |
