Steins;Gate still has a lot of humour that would only be understood by someone who's familiar with anime and it's tropes so I'm not too sure on how good that one would be. Gits would be a good rec as the whole cyberpunk thing isn't too out there for a western audience. I guess Canaan would be an alright choice for someone who's into an action series and Death Note is a good choice if you want to completely turn someone off from anime forever.

Care to explain why you think that? AFAIK, it's a common gateway anime. Granted, the blonde girl is pretty much terrible/10.

I dunno if anyone was scheming to use Madoka to change Adnarel's opinion on anime as a whole. I think it was more like several parties were saying 'Hey Adna, there's this really good show we're enjoying and you might also liek it oh and it happens to be anime'.

These two clauses are mutually exclusive though.

Obvious exaggeration for the lulz but I have a huge beef with the characters of the series being considerably lacking. The premise and first 13 episodes or so of the show are great, but it just starts to go down hill from there because Light is such an unbelievable character with no depth to him whatsoever. He has such a strong sense of justice but there's little back story to "justify" his sense of justice aside from his father being a cop. When a character doesn't even think twice about potentially killing a member of their family, there better be a good reason for why they think that way outside of finding a book on the way home from school one day. They could've done a great job with it by having Light actually think about what he's doing and ask himself "am I going too far with my ambitions?" before he starts to take it to the extreme but instead we're giving a character who's obsessed with killing all criminals from pretty much the get-go.

Misa Misa is equally terrible, having no will of her own and being obsessed with Light, she just becomes annoying and painful to watch. Granted at least she DOES have a reason for being obsessed with him but even then, it would be nice if she had more to her character. L is fun because he's so quirky but there isn't much to him either. His game of cat and mouse with Light goes from being really clever to pretty much rock, paper, scissors later in the series which is major disappointment.

The fact that this show has such flat characters(well, Misa isn't flat physically) over the span of 37 episodes is the nail on the coffin with this one. With a premise like that, I couldn't help but expect a series that would deal heavily with the justice system and whether the death penalty is really too far for some criminals but there isn't any focus on the criminals themselves and whether or not they can be simply pigeonholed as bad people, especially when a lot of corporations do much more immoral things and escape any prosecution.

The music and animation were both pretty nice though. TL;DR It's not a horrible series but it had a lot of potential that was just never realized in a long, drawn-out 37 episodes.

Thinking of some anime that avoids cliche anime tropes, Adna you might like Welcome to the NHK, which is a dark humor laden exploration of the lives of people who struggle to mesh with society. Its the most
western anime I've seen and the best too. I think it was based on a book. Paranoia Agent avoids anything boring and done before, FLCL is wierd but fits in with those, basically shows in that bein might be satisfying for someone who hates some of the japanese tropes which come off as melodramatic to a western audience.

Sound the horn and call the cry: "How many of them can we make die?"

I can pretty much guarantee you that Adna would hate Death Note, Canaan, or Steins;Gate. GitS maybe not, but I don't think he's much of a sci-fi fan.

Which is a shame because it's a [radio edit]ing brilliant genre, but lol opinions.

Let's face it, Adnarel's so deep in the anime-hate that nothing will ever change it. This whole thing's an exercise in how vitriolic his criticism will be. The end result is foregone; he's going to hate it. We're just going to be amused in the meantime.

Which is honestly kind of ridiculous. Adnarel, you're an alright guy and I like ya, but the degree to which you despise anime - based on nothing more than the generic artistic style, is beyond reason.
I agree, he's going to hate it and it's going to be amusing. I don't get the hate-on Adna has for anime either, if he just hated everything, I'd be like "oh, he's just one of those guys that criticizes everything" but the fact that he said it's inferior and from an inferior culture is rather strange to say the least.

must you guys take every single thing he says at face value

even if he may be completely serious
Simple, this is one of the myriad reasons I love you.
You've born in me this active feeling of caution to everything you ever say. I don't know how to feel about this.

Maybe the denser anime are more up your alley, rather than the entertaining ones. I know for sure that I want to see your reaction to Perfect Blue. And The Tatami Galaxy.

Thanks Poui.

The Death Note manga was more enjoyable for me than the anime, but imo the entire series becomes boring right before the timeskip.

seeing that perfect blue and paprika were inspirations for majorly famous western movies, not a bad idea to watch for a non anime fan.

Pick one.

That show encapsulates everything that is bad about anime, and I would recommend it to absolutely no one ever.

I found the humor to be incredibly subpar. It tries to be one of those silly anime with some serious undertones, but it ultimately fails, both at being funny and at seriously doing anything. The characters' situations were grossly exaggerated and/or contrived, often for comedic value, ultimately killing the impact when the story takes a slightly dramatic turn near the end. This is a staple formula: start off with comedic everyday life, then transition into something more dramatic. The issue being, it did neither of these fronts well.

Now, that's not to say welcome to the nhk is the worst anime I've ever seen. That title unequivocally goes to brain powered. However, wttnhk is just so incredibly average, there is nothing about it that would make me recommend it to anyone.

Do you mean the arguing about what's better or not? Since that will happen in literally every aspect of human life where things can possibly be compared. It's definitely human nature. Name a thing and I guarantee you people have argued about it.
