Aye. Sometimes I can't help but wonder if you hold me in lower regard or look down on me or pity me because I like anime. Like, "she has good taste in books, but I cannot believe she actually likes something so stupid like anime. She could be such an intelligent person if she didn't care about that weeaboo crap." I guess you probably don't, but I feel like I'm not worth it or that I'm a lesser friend because of it.

I'd also like to point out that although my avatars have been pretty much exclusively female, they've all been wearing clothes and I'm pretty sure the same goes for 95% of the people here.

Maybe you should quit assuming one bad apple spoils the bunch, mAdnarel

I would totally get a wallscroll though, so long as it was tasteful. And while some anime fans are "intense," some sports fans are also just as intense and cultish. It's just a matter of what's normalized by the society and what's not, but from a distance they're both equally creepy (and I say this as both a sports fan and an anime fan). Swimsuit calendars and "ecchi anime calenders" are both pretty weird objectively, for example.
Yeah, but it's acceptable for men to be creepily obsessed with sports and scantily clad models because it's what society expects of them.
Actually I'm pretty sure being "creepily obsessed" with those things is also considered pretty weird. Carrying around a picture of your favorite athlete half-naked in your wallet is going to get just as many raised eyebrows as a picture of your waifu.

Also I'm pretty sure Adnarel's only going on like this because it gets y'all's knickers in a knot, considering he didn't actually say that all anime fans were freaks in the first place; all he did was agree with Simple that a lot of anime isn't very accessible (which is true by the way).

Maybe I was misinterpreting what he meant, but this exchange made me think that Adnarel was equating anime fans with weirdos, as he put it.

Simple: This topic serves as a reminder that anime is not nearly as accessible as you might think.
Adnarel: *steps out of character*Honestly, so much this. I wish I could get a few more people at this board to believe this.
Bowse: What makes you think people here don't believe that?
Adnarel: I suppose I've been figuring that the lion's share of the animu people don't see themselves as weirdos. I guess I'm wrong, question mark?

Yeah, I realize he's just trying to make us get our panties in a bunch but it's more fun to play along anyways. I can definitely agree that anime isn't very accessible though, probably why it's become such a love it or hate it thing for some people.

I'm still worried that even Adnarel confuses his persona with reality, though. And given that his persona is practically on all the time, I sympathize with Draco that Adnarel probably looks down on me or considers me a "weirdo" for liking anime. What can you do, though.

At the same time, liking anime is such a small part of your identity. It may seem magnified here because of all the [radio edit]ing avatars and signatures, but I don't think people are going to think significantly less of you just because they are in disdain towards one hobby of yours.

no, he looks down on you for being a weirdo for many more reasons than that.

Opened up a tab for it. I expect I'll be able to start it tomorrow afternoon if I'm not too busy.

Wait! This is just a clever ploy to drive me further away from Adnarel, isn't it?!

... *clicks anime anyway* =3c

Nope. I admire the dedication needed to support that.

Also I happen to gel with my weeb friend's taste in anime so it evens out.

NANANA NANA NAAANAAA, I WANNA START A FIGHT
NANANA NANA NAAANAAAAAA, I WANNA START A FIGHT!

But no, seriously. I see that I've actually offended people now.

I stand by my statement that liking animu as a western-bred individual is weird. But I'd like to strip "weird" of its negative connotations. We live on the Internet - are we not forced to embrace our own weirdness? Our own esoteric interests? We're weird. Get over it.

Since particular attention is being paid to my comment about avatars being ecchi calendars, I need to address that as well. Years back on this forum, when anime was still pretty [radio edit]ing new to me, there was a noticeable wave of actual non-nude ecchi avatars here. That constituted a non-negligible chunk of my early exposure to anime. That, coupled with the loli craze, did not really do a great deal in ingratiating me to the genre as a whole. Is that fair? Probably not. But [radio edit] you, life's not fair either. And Simple's right, this forum is a veritable deluge of animu avvy's and sigs. Any casual observer would note this. I'm not asking anybody to change anything, mind you. Just appreciate that whenever I'm here I get to see things that annoy me.

Furthermore, I don't assume that one bad apple spoils the bunch. I just don't care for apples.

I'd say that this "LOL I HATE ANIMU SHIT" is preeeeetty overplayed by me. Think of it as an equal and opposite reaction to a perceived influence I feel when I visit the forum and read the Skypechats. Again, I ask for nobody to change on my behalf, not that you would anyway. :3

So why don't I like anime? For real? Aside from my artistic gripes, which are largely petty, I am not a big fan of stylized melodrama or even drama, which I see in animus a lot. But that's not an issue specific to anime. Now, let no man level the charge of inconsistency against me: stylized and overwrought dramatic tension is why I literally cannot watch most television shows. And beyond my complaints against silly drama, I do have another reason for disliking the entire genre. In fact it's the most important reason of all.

Unfortunately, it's a pretty personal reason (seriously), and I can't share it here. Cue the confusion, ridicule, and dismissals. I suppose I invite it. But if you're feeling reasonable today, accept that anime played a role in inflicting a grievance against me through the actions of a person, and instead of directing my disappointment to the individual, I projected it onto anime instead. It's like that time you ate some food that made you throw up once. In reality, you probably just had a little stomach bug - it wasn't the food itself that made you sick. But you'd rather die than eat that food again, because it [radio edit]ing made you throw up.

Finally, I think all should be able to agree that I've been a good sport in giving the genre a fair shot. To further prove my goodwill, I've decided to watch The Tatami Galaxy, which has been recommended to me by Simplechild. Look for a topic similar in title to this one in the future.

This topic will stay open for more discussion and for Science. Thanks for hearing me out. And remember: I only pretend to be a horrible person. Deep down, I like this forum and its people.

I actually totally missed that last bit until I quoted this. F u Adna

But yeah, thanks for clarifying that. Your persona is so consistent and vitriolic that it even was starting to fool me, who's known you for a long time... I think for our new users, who see you in a position of authority, that explanation is probably useful/hopefully reassuring.
