She was marked to be sort of a shit-for-brains mid-series villain, but instead underwent character development and revealed her heart. And not only did she reveal her heart in a flash to Sayaka, she pretty much kept it out for the remainder of the series. Even in alternate timelines, she retained her strong personality, but was clearly a force of good, and not the mercenary that she was initially written as being. I also enjoyed her "always eating" gag, even when it was revealed to be not so much a gag.

I wish they had made Madoka less of a piece of shit earlier on, but then that may have decompressed the shock of the final 3 episodes to such a degree that they would lose their impact. I think an actual change that I would make is I would change how weirdly attached Madoka gets to Mami. I didn't mind the fact that she became attached, but I did mind that it happened so easily and without even knowing Mami for that long. I'd rather have more Mami + Madoka screentime that does a little better job at justifying why Madoka has such a glistening, throbbing girlboner for Mami.
