Temple of Kraden News: Welcome to the Temple of Kraden! ------ All worshipers may enter the Most Holy Place in single file, reflecting on the bountiful blessing Kraden hath provided unto him or herself since their last visit. Head coverings are not necessary, as true penitence and humility are found within. The Priests and Priestesses of Kraden endeavor to remind all that fresh orange juice is heavily preferred; only whores use frozen.
Greetings, heathen. Perhaps some fortuitous blessing of Kraden's grace hath led you to our humble Temple, or perhaps you are simply curious about this strange and wonderful cult. Should you be willing - and dare to hope - to achieve enlightenment, the door opens before you. Lo! Leave your old life behind! For once you step through, you become something more than just yourself.

You become a Kradenette.

Are you willing to make the rapturous plunge? Do you have what it takes?

If a reliable source were to suggest an anime to you again, what would be your criteria?
Criteria
So basically anime that aren't 'anime'. The Tatami Galaxy is my biggest recommendation. Think "Groundhog Day" over the span of two years in college. Also the music:

[yt-sound]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkmqBSYLfbc[/yt-sound]

These would also be worth checking out:
Perfect Blue (Do you like mind[radio edit]s and hate idols? This is for you.)
Mushishi (Think Gulliver's Travels with more emphasis on worldbuilding and atmosphere than being satirical)
Aoi Bungaku (Adaptations of Japanese classical literature. Personal favorites are Run, Melos and Kokoro)

These are series with a few caveats:
Wandering Son (middle school drama, but is more mature about it plus that whole transgenderism thing)
Kids on the Slope (high school drama, but whatever there's jazz and 60's issues and some Christian themes and shit)
Nodame Cantabile (college drama, but look at all this classical music)

I'm pleasantly surprised that you ended up okay with it, Adnarel! I figured if you didn't like it by the time Jenna with teeth was introduced and then shit went down with Sayaka, you just wouldn't.

How many of his criteria does Fate/Zero meet? :trollex:

a scene end with sobs and somebody's name gasped out tearfully (I don't remember if this actually happens but given the tone of the series it probably does)
an extreme close-up of somebody's quivering eyeball

I... think that's it, actually.

Incidentally, Adnarel deeming it "not a waste of time" does more to convince me to watch it sometime than all the rest of the fanboying combined.

That depends on how much he likes to hear characters spout Japanese D&D jargon for days on end.

I'm really curious now to learn about who was responsible for introducing all those Christian themes. Or perhaps it was just somebody familiar with such themes and he/she decided to detachedly place them in the story, appreciating them for the pure artistic and dramatic merit they hold.
The writer is a bit of a western fuzzy little man-peach, he wrote fanfiction for the science-fiction movie Equilibrium once, and that's where Mami's gun kata-esque fighting style came from.

...Probably why he also did Fate/Zero, in which some of the major characters are western heroes (King Arthur, Alexander the Great, etc)

Most, really. That tends to be a common thing in the Fate series, doesn't it? I can count on one hand the number of Servants from Eastern myths.

The Servants, yeah (since Nasu is a self-proclaimed western myth fan; Urobuchi wanted a Chinese Servant in Fate/Zero but Nasu said "no, more western heroes"), but the setting is still Japan, and the Masters are major characters too, and most of those are Japanese, is what I meant by that.

I've heard its action scenes are very well done, if nothing else.

So sugoi Urobutcher <3

It seems like the Japanese in general love the Western mythology, just look at like every RPG ever and you'll see lots of reference to Western historical and mythological figures.

Glad to see that you thought Madoka was decent in the end Adna, I have to admit I felt the same way about Madoka a lot of the time. I was always waiting for the episode where she grows up and fights her own battles but then the series almost ended before that happened. I found the whole conflict between Sayaka and Kyouko kept me interested enough to keep going though. Nux Walpurgis is indeed one of the better tracks from the ost, I find her soundtrack for Kara no Kyoukai is overall better, but I'm not gonna recommend the series to you because you don't seem to like quivering eyeballs.

I like Equilibrium and it does have a bit of a cult following, but the general consensus of critics is that it's a piece of shit. Critics happen to be dumb as shit 99% of the time so you're better off not listening to them anyways though.

Yes, that one requirement actually makes it surprisingly hard to recommend another anime for him, since a lot of stories typically have someone dying at some point or another, and I can't remember which anime use that trope and which don't. Although I must ask, is it a quivering eyeball crying that bugs adna, or do quivering eyeballs of characters about to die a gruesome horrible death count, too? Because if it's just the former, that should be easy enough to avoid.

I've seen this, yeah. Norse mythology especially seems to get referenced in tons of games. Appeal of the foreign, I suppose.

For western RPGs that wouldn't be using somebody else's culture.

Wow, although considering very little of the movies I've seen recently would actually qualify as "good," outside of comedy stuff, you generally aren't missing out on much.

Also, Kara no Kyoukai definitely has it's fair share of quivering eyes and close ups of eyes, you don't even need to watch more than the trailer to find that out. Plus it has an achronological story which is generally a love it or hate it kinda thing.
