Hey, hey. Everyone who's smart from Ohio goes to space to get as far as they can from the place. The only place they can tolerate talking to while in orbit? That's right. Houston. Mission control. D:< |

Final: Episodes 10-12 Well, it's over. After suffering through the idiotic conventions of this truly deplorable medium, I've been rewarded with the 3 finest episodes I didn't even imagine were possible from this show. I hereby declare my complete and cathartic satisfaction with how the series has concluded. It's a Christ story! How wonderful! What could better appeal to my sensibilities than that? After thinking that Sayaka may be the main character for several episodes, I now see (as should anybody else who has watched this show) that the co-stars truly are Madoka and Homura. If the final 2 episodes didn't pan out the way they did, I'd unwaveringly endorse Homura as the sole main character of the show, but obviously that cannot be. There are a few regrets and disappointments with the series that I need to touch on at this time. 1) Despite Madoka's cowardice and weakness being a by-product of Homura's wish, the writers did not have to emphasize it so much and treat it the way they did. She only ended up being annoying, and explaining it sooner would have created a useful sense of dramatic irony that would give the show propulsive energy earlier on in the series. 2) The only piece of music I liked in the entire show was the anthem that played while Homura fought Walpurgisnacht in the penultimate episode. Everything else was Yawn City. Sorry, but I'm right and that's all there is to it. You're better off just accepting that as fact, making peace with it, and adjusting your opinions to match reality. Oh, and I still have never taken the time to listen to the opening and closing songs, and I never will. Not even mad. 3) The ending arc of rewriting the Laws of the Universe excuse this somewhat, but the pseudoscience regarding entropy still bothers me. If we're going to deal with the supernatural, let's just accept it as the supernatural and be done with it. They didn't have to bring physics into the picture, unless this was a underhanded jab at Science the whole time - I don't know if the Japanese are liable to send such a message, and I don't have the cultural awareness to truly discern what they were trying to say with it. 4) They waited too long to make this into a good show. I suffered through 9 episodes of anime bullshit to get to the crux of the show. [radio edit]. I never again want to see a scene end with sobs and somebody's name gasped out tearfully. I never again want to see an extreme close-up of somebody's quivering eyeball. I never again want two-part speeches made with a dramatic "but" cleanly dividing the part where the speaker delivers a dramatic line and walks away. I never again want to see oversized bloomers on anybody, ever again. I never again want to see fanservice shots up 14-year-olds' school uniforms. I never again want to see dumb hair and eyes colors. I never again want to see cool, athletic, and aloof transfer students. I never again want to see a transition scene of the school bells ringing. I never again want to see rifles, assorted debris, or anything else fall out of a skirt. On a similar note, I never again want to see a bomb thrown up a witch vagina. What the [radio edit] kind of completely useless imagery was that? [radio edit]. Alright, I feel better. Now, then, this crux of the show I just mentioned has redeemed the series in my eyes, though. Despite what you fedora-wearing, snotty-nosed, pampered little drama queens think, everything is all right. What appeared dangerously close to being a melodrama has now concluded as the archetypical drama, and that is as it should be. Madoka's assignation of all curses onto herself and denial of witch creation fits onto my worldview like a silky, sexy glove. It was the appropriate wish for the series to end with, and I'm very pleased they did it that way. I think there was a Christian, or multiple Christians on this writing team. Jenna with Teeth's plot line suggests it. The deliberate use of The Creation of Adam suggests it. The theme of the animu suggests it. I'm really curious now to learn about who was responsible for introducing all those Christian themes. Or perhaps it was just somebody familiar with such themes and he/she decided to detachedly place them in the story, appreciating them for the pure artistic and dramatic merit they hold. Either way, it was a tasteful move, and managed to wrap up the series in a package that is both emotionally charged and possessive of a sound and uplifted message. Ultimately, that is what I ask for in the media I consume. Ultimately, this made watching the series worth it. Ultimately, this was not a waste of my time. And ultimately, I hope following my thoughts in this topic were not a waste of your time. Thank you for reading. I hope you've derived a portion of the pleasure I've derived from chronicling my experience with the show. Now, ask me anything. |

Yeah, the Christ story bit is why I recommended it to you in the first place, and the whole "strength in weakness"/worldly strength isn't spiritual strength thing is why I wanted to see how you reacted to Madoka being annoying. Given the ending, it's a wonderful flip of the standards of judgment (the world vs. spiritual). Re: pseudoscience, I think even if it gets some of the facts wrong, it's still useful to have that language in the discourse, even if used as metaphor. It can provide a bridge and a reason for "artistic" people to learn more about science, to go out and do the research. The point isn't an accurate representation of entropy, which is what a science textbook does, but rather what is the symbolic significance of entropy, and how do we cope with the eventual heat death of the universe. I think sticking purely to the supernatural without any connections tends to reinforce the art-science divide, because we can't just ignore that science is a factor in the world around us. Speaking personally, my love of science and scientific knowledge has been recently (was always?) ignited by its representation in the arts. That's my "reason to learn," and for me, provides a symbolic or emotional context to understand science from. |

If a reliable source were to suggest an anime to you again, what would be your criteria? This interests me because another anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion, is so heavily laden with Christian imagery that it screams to be interpreted that way. However, according to the director, he just used them because it looked cool and shit. |

Keeping in mind that I haven't seen Evangelion*, I think there's a big difference between the superficial use of imagery (OH MAN CROSS-SHAPED EXPLOSIONS, and "let's call our Monsters of the Week ANGELS") and themes enacted through the whole story. I've heard there's new Adam and Eve crap at the end of Evangelion, but from all accounts it's very poorly handled. *Might have to just so I can properly talk about it, even if I have no desire to. |

...I think serial experiments lain fits that criterion? Although it's enough of a mindscrew that I'm not sure whether he'd go hyper analytical on it or just up and hate it. Anyway, I'm glad the last 3 episodes were able to salvage the anime for you, adna. I think that's how a lot of people feel when watching madoka; the last 3 eps are what make the series worth watching. |
