Yeah, that's pretty much Lancelot.

I had the same feeling about Madoka as you did at this point, Adnarel. Keep going~

Your write-ups are hilarious, and your reactions are progressing as I predicted they would. I am interested in what you think of the series as it continues.

And as for the music, I guess ignorance is bliss, because I think it's swell. Must be the curse of being knowledgeable about a medium.

Somehow I feel that your opinion that Erik's composition is better is solely because it's older or more distinguished. I listened to the piece you linked and the No. 2 and I found them really, really boring (actually not the word I'd use but nothing else comes to mind) and worse, too much alike. I can understand having motifs and themes but if you're just going to add in/take off a note or 2 to the main melody and change it to minor what's the point?

I mean it sounds...okay? At least idk how madoka's music is worse.

Yeah, the more interesting characters in the series are the ones around Madoka, you see their struggles through her eyes. Honestly, her reactions to everything shouldn't be surprising considering she's a 14 year old girl, clearly you don't know what it's like to be a 14 year old girl and go through suffering.

I actually like this approach of focusing on the characters more equally, and liked it in LotR as well. It's a nice change from having some overpowered main character that annihilates everything like a lot of action shows have.

I liked the piece you linked but I fail to see how it's as superior to Madoka's ost as you say it is.

I think Satie is more finely-wrought. Its melody has good form and a good contour. Its left hand pleasing to the ear and does exactly what it needs to. Madoka music is fomulaic and relies more on the sounds of the instruments themselves to carry the atmosphere rather than letting the music speak for itself.

Just take my word for it when I say that Satie is better than this animu composer. Seriously.

I honestly have no problem saying that Madoka is the least interesting character on the show. The only one who can really rival that claim is Mami, but she gets more of a pass given how short a time she's in the show. Her purpose is to catalyze, not to keep interest.

Concerning the music, since I have no ear for it, I think part of the reason people might enjoy it so much is by association. The music is certainly tied thematically into the show and scenes, with specific pieces obviously representing characters or themes or stuff. Thus, when people who have watched the show and liked it hear the music, it subconsciously connects their emotions of the show itself to the music.

Personally, I know that is exactly what boosts Magia, the ending theme, up so high to me. There have been several other anime openings that I've wound up liking, despite no particular reason why, other than that they remind me of what I liked from the show.

It could also be why I don't care for the opening theme, Connect, at all - there's little in the show to connect (lol) me to it.

To me, Connect gets a lot more relevance once you realize from whose point of view it's supposed to be, but I'm not going to say anything else about that because spoilers.

The left hand in Satie plays like 3 full notes over and over and is comparable to a bass line in a pop rock song. The melody is just as rigid. It uses more, yeah, but it's still rigid. Sorry but Satie is eh.

Now see, this is assuming that Adna gives even a single [radio edit] for OP/ED themes.

I agree with Adna about Madoka being an extremely static character. I actually don't have much of a problem with static characters, but the main thing that annoyed me was that Madoka is the protagonist. Static protagonists are unbearably boring to watch.

Could you imagine what would happen to Hataraku Maou-sama if Chiho was the protagonist?

I'm dismayed to hear people calling Madoka a static protagonist. That means she must not change much even in the final 5 episodes yet. ._.

I was simply using them as an example of subconscious association, but they can apply to any of the songs in the OST.

I don't actually know the meaning of the lyrics in Connect (or Magia, for that matter, or almost every non-English song I have). I enjoy them solely based on the sound itself (and the association, where applicable).

EDIT: We can't really comment accurately on what happens in the next five episodes. Like, on anything.

At this point, I'd agree wholeheartedly with those people. I expect Sayaka to die shortly, and clearly Homura is not meant to die until a great deal more happens with her.

Madoka music is fomulaic and relies more on the sounds of the instruments themselves to carry the atmosphere rather than letting the music speak for itself.
Wait, this is a bad thing? What's wrong with using certain instruments to help carry an atmosphere?

The lyrics and connection are why I like Magia actually, the song itself is just plain repetitive.

Yeah, I will completely lay the banhammer into anyone who veers into spoiler territory or makes any more ~mysterious~ comments about where things are going from here.

Complete. Ban.

I don't think that's his problem. Rather, according to him, the utilization of those instruments isn't creative enough to satisfy his ear.

I don't actually know the meaning of the lyrics in Connect
I won’t forget the promise we made.
I close my eyes and ascertain it.
Shaking off the darkness that drew close to me, I continue forward.

Will I one day be able find
the future I’ve lost?

I’ll shatter the shadow of anxiety no matter how many times it takes,
I’ll continue to walk in this world.

Time that endlessly passed proclaims a new beginning,
I iron out my unchangeable feelings
and open the closed door.

My awoken heart starts to race, in order to sketch the future.
Even if I’m stranded on a difficult road,
the sky will always be waiting for me with its beautiful blue color.
I don’t have anything to fear,
no matter what happens, I will not be defeated.

As I look back, I see my friends,
and before I realize it I’m tenderly surrounded by them.

In a world where everything was distorted,
I believed in one thing…that there was salvation.

If we share our happiness and sadness, our emotions will grow stronger.
If my voice can reach you,
I’m sure a miracle will happen.

I won’t forget the promise we made.
I close my eyes and ascertain it.
Shaking off the darkness that drew close to me, I continue forward.
No matter how big the wall is,
I’ll show you I can overcome it.
I believe in the future, I pray for the future.

I wandered within a broken world
and as if being drawn out of it, I finally made it.

My awoken heart starts to race, in order to sketch out out the future.
Even if I’m stranded on a difficult road,
the sky will always be waiting for me with its beautiful blue color.
I don’t have anything to fear,
no matter what happens, I will not be defeated.

I’ll always wait for the future.

Anyway, I do want to comment on this since Adna didn't:

I can understand where this line of reasoning comes from. Aren't the rest of the main characters also 14-year-old girls though? You're right that it's a totally reasonable response, but given that nobody else seems to react that way, doesn't that seem rather inconsistent?

Well, did all the people you knew at 14 act the same? >_> Sometimes inconsistency is more true-to-life.
