Thread.

You stupid [radio edit]ers have been trying for ages to get me to watch this p.o.s. TV show from an inferior country with an inferior tradition of storytelling using inferior media, devices, tropes, and music. Naturally, as I'm not a worthless sack of shit, I've flat-out ignored your malicious suggestions for me to watch animu. Shame on you for trying to corrupt me, by the way.

But now an individual who carries a lot of influence with me has decided that it would be best for me to try out a particular Magica Madoka. I honor and respect said individual, even though she is the worst mouse. Ergo, I will watch it. Because my initial reactions attracted a bit of laughter and "wtf" in the [title=Snoutbox]Cancerbox[/title], I decided to serialize my reactions in a topic. For science!

Each post will be a new set of reactions to an episode, or block of episodes.

Also, spoilers.

Episodes 1-3

Thankfully, Jenna immediately realized that if I was made to watch the opening song, I would storm out of the room in a rage and swear on everything I hold dear to never, ever watch any anime again. We skipped it. After 3 episodes, I still have not seen the opening sequence, nor do I ever intend to.

Frankly, I wasn't feeling very good after the first episode. My case that the Japanese are only capable of interacting in 3 places was strengthened, as every single [radio edit]ing scene was either at home, on the green and shady street to high school, and high school. They switched it up by putting things in stores and shit. What-[radio edit]ing-ever. Oh, and there was an absent father, a group of 3 friends that had comically different personalities, and a new girl at the high school who was oh-so "sugoi."

God damn it.

Now, here's the part where usually the tone of the post switches, and I say "BUT, in spite of all that, I enjoyed it, was drawn into the story, etc. etc. etc."

I'm not going to do that. It's still pissing me off; it still sucks. In short, it's still shitty anime. I'm gonna watch the rest of it, though, because there are a few things that are intriguing me. The art style inside labyrinths is really, really cool. It's a refreshing break from the grotesque faces and the impossibly-proportioned limbs. Unfortunately, during the witch sequences there's usually a stupid, tarted up bitch dancing around the screen literally pulling rifles out of her panties. Just for a second, by the way, can we objectively step back and admit, as a group of sane individuals, that her hair is literally worse than Hitler? I mean, systematically eliminating a startling large array of socioeconomic and racial undesirables was a cruel and reprehensible thing to do. I'll give you that. But did the illustrators of this television show really have to inflict upon us the monstrosity that was Mami's hair? [radio edit]. I predicted her dying, by the way. When I called it early on in the episode, Jenna looked at me, aghast, and asked me how I knew.

How did I know? Let me count the ways.

1) Benevolent and kind mentor establishes herself early in the series, marking her for an early doom.
2) She becomes close to our protagonist, setting up her death as a catalyst for change for the protag.
3) She was confident in her abilities. Pride goeth before a fall.

I'm tired of talking about her now. Let's bring up Kyubey.

I dread coming to the Temple because it's soaked in the semen of those who have repeatedly blown their meager loads over this cat thing. Kyubey is not that cool yet. >_> Pretty nondescript little kawaii animal who has only served to serve as a link between the magical girl candidates and the magical girls themselves. I'm told that Kyubey becomes more badass later, but now he's completely pedestrian. Yawn.

I'm going to keep watching the series. I want to see how Madoka and Homura resolve their differences. I'm not as interested in Sayaka, because I've already marked her as another character who will die. But you clowns can look forward to more installments in this thread as I watch the rest of the series. Hey, who knows, maybe it will become good at some point! 8D

Well, I'm not surprised. But props to you for giving it a chance! And I think that, even if you don't exactly love it by the end, you'll probably end up liking it more than you do.

I am in fact looking forward to more updates, whether to see your opinion change over time or just to watch a continuous stream of humorously expressed contempt. However, I resent the implication that I am a clown. That applies to other people, primarily Saturos, the vast majority of which are also evil.

"Badass" is not a word I would consider terribly applicable to that prediction about Kyubey, but the overall point of it potentially getting more interesting to you over time still stands, even if the massive wave of affection it received at the time was overblown.

That said, even if you're ignoring the opening, I am personally hoping for more thoughts on the music as your progress continues.

Honestly, I think this alone will leave you having considered the series not a waste of time, at least.

I shall refrain from commenting, mostly. But yeah, good call in skipping the OP. It almost made me lose hope in the series as I was going through. Or at least roll my eyes. I think you would outright explode.

I think most people didn't see that death coming because up until then, it wasn't "that kind of show." Aka, more of a "kids' show feeling." So maybe that had something to do with it.

*noms Adnarel's head*

Now, watch on, and keep us posted. Your rants are at least amusing, but be honest~

I have a question, though. If it were a male character being as showy and so on fighting witches, would you be as dismissive?

I'd be twice as dismissive, and unleash a tirade of homophobic slurs to boot. >_>

That father seems pretty absent, existing in one of those places where Japanese people interact. You know, at home.

Yeah, I didn't get the absent father remark.

Nor the "three places." Like, let's see, middle schoolers interact at home, at school, in parks, and at shopping malls...
... that seems pretty normal for city life. Where else would you expect, Adnarel?

Anyways, despite loving Madoka and thinking the exact opposite about Japanese tropes and music in comparison with ze west, I look forward to more posts.

That rant about Mami was hilarious and I do agree with you on the artstyle in the labyrinths being the most interesting part of the series for the first part, although that "stupid, tarted up bitch dancing around the screen literally pulling rifles out of her panties." just makes it all the better.
