Temple of Kraden News: Welcome to the Temple of Kraden! ------ All worshipers may enter the Most Holy Place in single file, reflecting on the bountiful blessing Kraden hath provided unto him or herself since their last visit. Head coverings are not necessary, as true penitence and humility are found within. The Priests and Priestesses of Kraden endeavor to remind all that fresh orange juice is heavily preferred; only whores use frozen.
Greetings, heathen. Perhaps some fortuitous blessing of Kraden's grace hath led you to our humble Temple, or perhaps you are simply curious about this strange and wonderful cult. Should you be willing - and dare to hope - to achieve enlightenment, the door opens before you. Lo! Leave your old life behind! For once you step through, you become something more than just yourself.

You become a Kradenette.

Are you willing to make the rapturous plunge? Do you have what it takes?

To me, the difference is that Temple is a de facto public place that everyone should have a right to access. It's something we all share in common. On Skype there are innumerable chatrooms, so that if one doesn't work, there are others; secondly, Skype selectively chooses people to participate in a given chat, so it's more "semi-public" than public.

I don't think less of you for it, Boyd. It's not my place to make moral judgments, but rather to craft a forum that's accessible and welcoming to the highest amount of people. You rightly noted that this is the side I'll take, as admin, because I believe it's the right path. However, to repeat, I don't think less of you, and think you're a great person. I understand your points and recognize how it could be construed as censorship; however, you're right in predicting that I believe the filter to be the lesser of two evils.

I don't think you can really take the ideological high ground on this one. This is hardly censorship in the civil liberty sense of the word - your right to political free speech isn't being impinged upon, and as several people have pointed out, everyone knows what's being said, even if the word itself has been replaced with a different one (the point of which, arguably, is the subversion of the problem word itself, not necessarily the idea being communicated). The post preview system is censorship. This isn't anywhere near that.

I'm not trying to take the high ground. I'm trying to keep it even. The way the opposition has voiced their opinions, THEY put themselves on the high ground and me below. As far as I'm concerned, these are two even opinions. I think I'm right, but I don't think I'm objectively right. Even if they didn't intend this and I'm just misinterpreting, I'm going to make sure that my opinion isn't devalued, especially when it's still 50/50.

Also don't try and define free speech for me. Political free speech=/=free speech.

There are different types of censorship, but censorship is still censorship. For example, if every offending word filtered to [radio edit] (I typed that out), you wouldn't know what I was saying (context clues aside), just that I used a "bad" word.

The censorship/free speech dichotomy only exists in the context of political communication. There's no such thing as true free speech. Everything is censored in some way or another. You can talk about censorship as practice (though it would be worth differentiating it from censorship as ideology), but if you're going to invoke censorship/free speech, be aware of its discursive use.

Well, when it comes down to it, I think it's silly I can't do something on a mostly young adult forum that I could do in middle school.

But what was the policy? Was it okay to use language like that, or was it just not enforced to not do so?

Don't curse. [radio edit], shit, damn, hell, etc all got you in trouble.

Other stuff only got you in trouble if it was bullying.
