I don't think not being able to say a word is as offensive as calling someone a [insert offensive word that targets a minority here]. Well maybe it's that offensive for Gilgamoosh. |

Is "retaged" (typed on purpose) something in particular that you hate, Boyd, or do you say you feel targeted by the filter in general? I don't follow... What even is a retaged is it one of those new fangled animes |

Originally the filter was put in just to mess with me, then left in because I hate "retaged" (not filtered) and now I guess it's still here because some people like it. So yes, I am targeted by it, initially, anyway. And no it's not an anime, it's Saturos being retaged |

oh [radio edit] no, this is wrong and I won't stand for it Also, i've always hated the "just use other words" argument when it comes to swears. When it comes to something like retarded, yeah, don't say it*, it's bad and mean and I legitimately feel this way. But when you go "cursing means you have a small vocabulary" I get pissed because I have a decent vocabulary. Shit, piss, [radio edit], and bitch are all a part of it. You're asking me to shrink my vocabulary, [radio edit] that. *I'd like to make an argument here about the word retarded. Obviously, at this point it's become so strong a part of the vernacular people throw it around without thinking "handicapped persons", they're thinking "lol u so dumb". The interesting thing about language is that it continues to evolve, and retarded is evolving away from being about those with actual handicaps and becoming a generic insult. Eventually, if allowed to follow it's course, it could lose all connection (aside from, you know, the historical) and just be a generic insult with no offense meant to those disabled. The "fight to stop the word" is just reinforcing that "retarded" means a handicapped person Now, I'm all for "stopping the word" or whatever the campaign is called. John C. McGinley aka Dr. Cox convinced my dumbass, and I do my goddamned best to fight using the word that's been so intrinsic since middle school. That and gay. Gay is still an insult, and that's |

I see... well what if we just change the filter to the best insult ever? See everybody wins, because people who dont wanna see the real word dont, and people who want to use the word are automatically supplied with a superior derogotory term. Just don't make it Satterrible im sick of reading that. Though really, my vote in the poll would be "indifferent. " |

No, the filter wasn't put in to mess with you. It wasn't even my idea. Using "retaged" in particular was my idea, since we were censoring "retard" and "fag" at the same time, so to be silly about it we just combined the words and used the same filter for each. However, there's definitely an element of "keeping it that way is amusing." Which is why I said we can use a different filter word if it bothers you. |

The reason why it was filtered had nothing to do with you, or any specific person. I was the one who suggested it. :U I promise it wasn't some drawn-out shitty joke against you. edit: ohai satty |

You should filter it to an empty string " " Then I could call you a goddamned [radio edit]ing , you know? How awesome would that be, you ? It's just confusing. It doesn't make peoples' minds jump to whatever you've set up to be filtered, they just think somebody made huge, ridiculous typos. |

Pls, you sound like some guy I knew in high school that fangirled RATM. I personally don't see [radio edit], shit, ass or anything like that as offensive(seeing as it's part of my vocabulary aswell) but I can see why retag and fuzzy little man-peach would be offensive to some and don't mind if it's censored. |

Fun Temple Fact: "Bitch" was originally word-filtered (to "[radio edit]", I believe), and was removed after much discussion and gnashing of teeth. I will say I don't like the replacement text of "fuzzy little man-peach" simply because it seems a bit more demeaning than "hot hunk of manmeat". But that's just me. Then again, why not go whole hog and have the replacements be "retag(got)" and "fatard(ed)"? For, uh, cadence purposes. Also they sound like words, too. Also for curiosity's sake, Jenna (or anyone else involved in the matter), what was the reasoning behind adding the word currently filtered to "retag" in the first place? |

On a side note, I'd so be down for the empty string as a filter cause it would be lulz. |

To be honest, I don't think "language evolves" is a particularly convincing argument, either. Sure, language evolves. Culture evolves. The connotation of words changes with context. This is, in fact, why some people find certain words and ideas offensive, while others think they're fine or are ambivalent to them. But language is communal, and if the community doesn't agree on the meaning of the term, it's going to be problematic. Arguing about which meaning of the word is "right" or with the times, or whatever, is less productive than acknowledging that words can mean different things to different people, and acknowledging and accounting for those differences where possible. "When I say 'retaged', please understand I don't mean mentally impaired, I just mean stupid' is only half the battle. The other half is "When I say 'retaged', I acknowledge that you could take from this any one of a number of meanings [and depending on how considerate and/or emotionally aware you are, disclaimer as to any personal feelings invoked]". (Conversely, "When I hear you say 'retaged', I understand that you could simply mean that it's stupid, but please allow room for any personal context I may bring to my interpretation".) There was that movement a little while ago where people (okay, we'll lump them in with "feminists") tried to reclaim the word "slut" as a kind of positive label empowering female sexuality, which was an interesting exercise to watch from affair, but probably wasn't successful on the whole. |

Maybe it's only a thing in Canada where we're oppressed by the totalitarian Harper government. It shouldn't be surprising considering one of their most popular songs is about anti-censorship and such though. Also, nope, gotta be nerdy wusses and keep censorship. |
