Pretty sure showing naked minors and two girls having a close friendship are on two different levels, Solbowz. |

I'm not trying to imply that showing Shirabe naked wasn't depraved or anything. However, like I said fanservice is still fanservice. Their have been plenty of yuri scenes in GX that were added just to pander to otakus, and that promote a specific stereotype about gay and lesbian relationships and people, just like the misinformation sequences and losing your clothes when your gear is destroyed are made to pander to otakus and etc. It's all shit. Just because yuri fanservice is lesbians doesn't make it any better written or any less pointless. You can call it "having a close friendship" all you want, there are better ways to portray that than pointless and poorly written yuri scenes. |

No, those are different things. Symphogear's use of "yuri" is implicit, not explicit, so it certainly doesn't represent it in a titillating or sexual way like, say, Sakura Trick or Prisma Illya does. It's hardly even fanservice so much as close friendships, which I can say are more or less accurate to the closeness of friendships in reality (if anything, there's less intimacy in this episode than in reality). You could maybe argue that it's representing stereotypes of same-sex relationships, but it isn't a relationship in the first place - so that's an inference that you the viewer are making. The equivalent to our other fanservice would be someone being naked off-screen instead of on-screen, in that this is only implied. Furthermore, you seem to imply that this "yuri"/close friendship is only to appeal to otakus, but Symphogear has a strong female fanbase (according to Peytral and Boyd, anyway), and I think Draco could vouch for it being appealing for its representation/implication of same-sex relationships. Same-sex bonds don't purely exist for the hetero audience, especially if there's no sexual component here. Speaking personally, I'd be just as happy as if it was a hetero "holding hands and attacking" thing. You're right, yuri being lesbians (which is kind of a tautology) doesn't make it any more or less pointless. There are perhaps better ways to portray it, and we can certainly discuss ways of presenting nuance and conflict in such relationships - but honestly, I think Symphogear does a decent enough (if ham-fisted) job in having inter-personal conflict and not having just a pure and idyllic relationship, but having conflict and disagreements between the pairs. Sometimes handled better than others, but there's some attempt to introduce nuance. I didn't say it was perfect or that it was even good, just that it's far more preferable to sexual fanservice, which generally is completely separate from character and any form of sexual empowerment (which would be weird as a theme anyway), and basically is just a matter of the camera or "plot" being voyeuristic in a way that's separate from the actions and agencies of the characters. |

I disagree. I also disagree that fanservice has to be titillating or sexual, at least in the way that I think you're implying here. It doesn't have to be explicit or obvious that the point is to be sexual like the "lolita concept" outfits in the Music Video here, it's still fanservice and (in a way) sexual despite not being titillating. I'm operating under this assumption based on your examples of Prisma Ilya and Sakura Trick, as well as your complaints about sexual fanservice. So if I'm wrong about what you mean by titillating or sexual, my apologies.
Usually I'd be the first one to say "No, it's platonic." In fact I'm sure that you and I have even argued about it before. Except Edge Works' lyrics are literally about how much Kirika and Shirabe love each other and want to protect each other, and the scene in episode one makes it seem less platonic than Chris (and maybe Hibiki) are comfortable with. I'm not sure what whether it's platonic or not has to do with it being fanservice or not, though. Even if I thought Miku/Hibiki and Shirabe/Kirika had completely platonic relationships I'd still complain about the pointlessness of the scene in episode one, or the lilies on Kirika this episode. I didn't use it in my last post but I'd say Maria/Tsubasa are obviously a platonic relationship but Boyd thought I'd get mad about how gay Tsubasa blushing when Maria grabbed her hand in London was. Personally, I think that was character related and Tsubasa was just surprised by Maria actually doing things, but it -could- be interpreted as yuri fanservice. I'll concede the last point about most sexual fanservice being completely separate from a character's development. I think you're right. I'm not complaining about the yuri existing, I'm complaining about it not being done well and certain scenes or shots being added because certain segments of the fanbase want "muh yuri" or "muh lesbians". If it adds nuance to the characters than yuri scenes are fine, but there's a lot of yuri stuff this season which seems like it was added just for otaku pandering and just because it -can- be done well doesn't make it any better than Maria's boob bounce in the car or whatever. Though I think a decent amount of the yuri scenes this episode were done well. |
