Short series wouldn't be too bad for a newcomer. Something like Baccano would end up being BBC miniseries length, and Doctor Who fans could tolerate longer series if they liked the concept. But movies would definitely be a good way to introduce someone. I remember showing my roommate the first season of Haruhi. I forget if we watched in chronological order or not, but she was pretty confused either way. I think that Haruhi may not be a good introductory series because of how the title character is rather unlikable at first and how all of the sci-fi stuff is just dropped on you very suddenly. ... Well, going back to my first paragraph, maybe it would go over well with Doctor Who fans at least.

Most western stuff is about adults doing things while shows that are about teens doing things are for, well, teens. Anime with a high school setting probably isn't the best place to start for a western hot hunk of manmeat. |

There's also what we know about the people themselves to consider, of course. All of these sound great for people our age (pfft, what even is that anymore?), but for significantly older or younger folks, different kinds of introductions to anime are to be considered. For instance, I'm considering showing Gosick to my mother. She typically likes detective murder mysteries from Europe (english accents and all that), often set in the early 1900's. So there's already a considerable number of factors in it that she'd find interesting. Also there aren't any awkward sexual references thrown around either verbally or physically like you see in a lot of anime, nor any overly dark content. I mean, sure there's murder, but she apparently likes that. XD |

There's a huge difference between the detective work shown in Gosick/UN-GO and the detective work shown in, say, Detective Conan/Kindaichi Case Files. I'd elaborate, but there's already an article articulating this particular difference. |

It looks like I will have to check out this UN-GO series. From what the article states, it seems to be in the vein of the sort of detective fiction I like. I will have to add it to my list and report back. I also just finished watching Madoka. I can't really be analytic right now because I am still caught up in the "feels," as the kids would say, but I enjoyed the series the second time through, and I understood even more than I did the first time.

I always tend to get Outlaw Star, Cowboy Bebop, and Trigun mixed up in my head. I've never seen any of them (well, one Trigun (I think) movie at a con), but for some reason those three are all mixed in my head as being westerns or space westerns or otherwise gritty anime that don't seem like they would fit my taste. /anecdote So anyway, why would Outlaw Star be a good one to recommend to people who don't usually watch anime?

What do you want to say? Despite being a 'Space Western' type of show it's actually quite a bit different from Bebop. I think it's very similar to Firefly, perhaps even more because until now I hadn't really heard Bebop compared to Firefly but I had heard that about Outlaw Star. Of course, I've never seen Firefly so I don't really know. @Draco: They're all very different shows, and their only similarity is their genre, really. I've only seen Bebop and Outlaw Star so I don't really know of Trigun, but I don't think any of them really qualify as 'gritty'. Yes, there's action, and yes there's blood but none of them get too dark. Anyway, Outlaw Star is good for western audiences for pretty much all the same reasons Bebop is. |

Madoka stuff, spoilers, Kyouko and Sayaka Echoing that Fate/Zero would be a great choice to introduce someone to anime with. Why don't you watch it with her, Draco? Also, echoing Silv's point: yeah, sometimes a show that uses a lot of anime tropes could go over well with someone who isn't sick of them. For example, if I saw Haruhi again for the first time, I don't think I'd like it nearly as much as I did. |

actually tbh I think f/z is ok to show to someone new to the anime scene, you need to experience f/sn in order to really appreciate f/z, mostly b/c f/z is written so much better than f/sn, but without prior knowledge of how fate works it'll just be 'good' |

That's only half of it. Since it's a video game and you have to fight witches, the OTHER half is playing Kyubey and choosing when to form contracts. And the magical girl's starting strength depends on her emotional state, so yeah. Basically Homura vs Kyubey, except you play both. Also imo the only issue with F/Z before F/SN is that if they don't read the VN and just watch the F/SN anime instead it'll end up to be a lackluster finale. Then again I guess since I did the VN before Zero I can't really say for sure. |

I did watch F/Z before reading F/SN and the only reason I'd rate Zero above F/SN is because of the different formats. If you gave me a 26 episode anime done by Ufotable of UBW or Heaven's Feel |

I did F/Z before I knew practically anything about F/SN, and it held up pretty fantastically except the very end. But yeah, I would say F/Z and the F/SN VN are fairly equal... F/Z is better written and has much better self-containment, but I feel like F/SN tells a more continuous story. Or that it's F/Z is more about psychology, and F/SN is more about archetypes. F/Z questions heroic deeds, while F/SN fulfills them. |

This topic is basically going to be me tl;dring about Madoka Magica, isn't it? Whoops! 8D Also, Fate/Zero would be a terrible way to introduce someone to anime, I don't know what weeaboo crack you've been smoking. >.>

You have to have some sort of investment in the universe it's set in. There is a LOT of room for activities in Fateverse, as seen in the numerous RPs we've tried to do. |

Yeah, I mean, I'm sure it's pretty cool and all, I just know that if someone sat me down to watch it when I had no idea what anime even was, I would nope right out of there within ten minutes.

Aside from the info dump first episode I don't see how the lack of fanservice, moe high school girls, plots revolving around high school, etc would make it hard for western fuzzy little man-peachs to get into. |
