In this topic we strive for more than just fangirling, although that's okay. I hope that everyone can come together to think critically and delve deeper into what makes a good series or a bad series. You don't have to go full English major, though, unless you want to. Thoughts on my rewatch of Madoka I've still got two episodes to rewatch (this is my second time watching the series, by the way) but I already want to rewatch the series again. I feel a bit nostalgic for the full effect of some of the bombshell plot twists, but knowing stuff like Homura's backstory from the beginning allows me to pick up the foreshadowing that's built into the show. I also have a much better appreciation for Sayaka this time through, though I can't put my finger on exactly what has changed in how I feel, and like with Homura I am very interested in watching Madoka's character develop now that I know the full story. This is a very technically proficient show. You can tell that nothing is put in by accident. In episode ten where Homura first meets Madoka there are some shots that are directly reproducing stuff from the first episode, like the sequence when Madoka walks Homura to the nurse's office. It's pretty sweet. Still, one thing that I am still a bit fuzzy on is the exact parameters of Homura's contract and the time travel she gets. Madoka was already a magical girl when Homura first met her the first time, so how come Madoka isn't a magical girl when they first meet in the main story's time loop? Does something happen between Homura's time resetting and the day she transfers into the school? Stuff like that is why I spent a couple nights (including one some of you may remember from writer's chat) thinking about time travel in fiction and compiling a list of tenets of time travel stories. But yeah.

I probably should, though :U I've been rewatching Welcome to the NHK! recently. I like it enough to buy the DVD; the versions I'm watching now are really low quality, and I'm dumb enough to care about that sort of thing. Watching them in higher quality will be wonderful. Welcome to the NHK resonates with me enough to be one of my favorites stories, but not enough to make it painful to watch. I understand why some people find it hard, though. The amount of NEET and social awkwardness portrayed is pretty impressive, but that's what creates the problems, and character development, that make me like it so much. The characters are so... human.

It seems interesting from what I've read about it, but series that have too much of a focus on embarrassing awkwardness trigger my cringe factor. Still, if it's a more realistic piece, especially with a protagonist who's older than high school, I might check it out. I've been having trouble connecting with the stories in a lot of general anime about high school students as I get older. On a side note, does anyone else feel that way ever?

It's realistic, except for segments where the protagonist hallucinates. The protagonist is at least old enough to go to college; I believe he's in his early twenties. I can't remember if his age is ever explicitly stated. I've not been having trouble connecting with high school student stories, but I have found myself feeling that it's a bit weird to be in my twenties and still watching/reading stories with protagonists younger than I am. Not that I'll stop doing so, at least for a while. I do tend to prefer characters, or at least protagonists, to be closer to my age, or somewhere in their twenties.

On Madoka Spoiler: click to toggle I also found a new appreciation for the attention to detail and foreshadowing in the series after I watched it the second time with my brother. Homura repeating the same time line ad absurdum is really a great example of a plot twist done right in that it has A LOT foreshadowing it but never makes it come across as too obvious. I loved Sayaka even on the first time watching it and found her story very convincing. "Good guys" actually being conflicted about doing the right thing is something I'd like to see a lot more of in other series as it generally makes it much more interesting. Whether they're conflicted about their lack of personal gain from doing what's right or whether what they're doing is actually for the greater good, it makes them much more relatable than someone who's set on being good no matter what and undergoes little change in that. On Madoka not being a magical girl in the timeline that the series takes place in. I believe that's just a result of her being warned by Homura and also the dream about the previous timeline at the start of the series that would have made her more hesitant. Even in the original timeline, Madoka only just became a magical girl not long before when they save Homura, even stating herself that "Mami is the real veteran." Time travel in fiction does seem to be very confusing and hard to believe at times. I don't know if you've seen Steins;Gate yet but it does a great job at providing a more scientific take on time travel. It has a slow start but it gets more interesting the more you keep watching it.

Since you started talking about Madoka I can't bring myself to object to this topic ;; Madoka became a magical girl at some point between when Homura gets out of the hospital and when they first meet. After Madoka asks Homura to stop her from contracting, Homura repeatedly kills Kyubey before he can contact her. I THINK there was a scene in episode 10 with Homura holding Kyubey outside Madoka's window? That's before they met. Also, according to Urobuchi, Homura can't go back in time until the day of Walpurgisnacht and she always ends up back at the hospital, no earlier/later. So if Madoka dies/contracts before Walpurgisnacht, Homura has to stay in that timeline until then even though she already failed. If you read mangos you should read The Different Story, which focuses more on Mami and Kyoko, expands the latter's backstory, and Spoiler: click to toggle goes through one of the earlier time loops.

(Kyouko)" to "omg I'm a dead girl walking" to "what's the point brb becoming witch." Okay, that was a bit silly, but the arc of how she went from idealistic to jaded like that was very realistic. And, yeah, a character second-guessing her own motivations really makes her a lot more human than someone who's always good and never doubts herself. Steins;Gate has been on my to-watch list for a while. I'll have to check it out some time soon! @Gilgamesh Yeah, I remember the scene with Homura holding the dead Kyubey, and that's what I kind of figured happened. It was never made explicit (that I can remember) how much time passed between the loop resetting and the two meeting, but I guess in the original timeline sick girl Homura wouldn't get discharged and then go to school the very next day. I do remember Madoka saying that she had only contracted with Kyubey the week before during the very first timeline, so there's that. And that's cool to know about Walpurgisnacht. I'd wondered if Homura could hit the reset button early, but guess not. I'm going to watch the movies next, but I definitely am eager to check out some of the other materials, so I'll keep that manga in mind. Thanks!

I don't understand why everyone was "wow Rin you're the biggest prick ever" because it explained some of his motivations for why he wanted to beat Haruka so bad... I don't think Rin was even thinking about how Haruka felt, because Haruka exuded "I don't care" about most things, and I think Rin was operating under the assumption that was still the case. but in this ep I'm glad Makoto was able to get Rin to kinda realize there's more to Haruka than that. :') I still wonder why people felt so angry at Rin last ep, though... :/

Also heard the Urobutcher is thinking of doing another series after the 3rd movie? Apparently he'll only do so if he has the inspiration to add onto the story at that point which is great because that means it'll either be good or won't exist, nothing inbetween. Only thing about the other thread is that you can make a post and come back the next day and everyone has already moved onto a different subject because it gets a lot more traffic. So it's nice to have a general anime & manga thread and a more "in depth" one.

Already I'm very much enjoying it because there is a lot of backstory to the two magical girls we didn't see as much of in the anime. I just got to a point where Kyouko took Mami to her house, and her family is still... Well, gotta love dramatic irony. I have a feeling now that this manga isn't going to be happiness and sunshine. (You know, unlike the anime. >_>) I guess this is a sign that I am going to devote myself to becoming a full-fledged fan of this series, in all of its forms.

Like, the ending was good and what it should be, but you just wish there was more you could watch with those characters?
