To me, that's the beauty of the game. Finding all the proper balances--how long to spend training vs. exploring, where to spend your money, which stats to train, the balance of discipline vs. happiness, keeping your digimon from getting exhausted while still doing a lot, balancing your monster's weight, keeping track of the time of day for sleep, feeding, bathroom needs, and events that are only available on certain days/times. |

That's just it, though. As an RPG it's pretty terrible; it's good as a sims game or pet simulator, though. And training stats is terrible. "Yes, allow me to watch my Digimon chillax under a waterfall fifty times" or whatnot. |

I suppose I can see the appeal if you're into sims games but considering the lack of plot and mundane gameplay, DW1 has little appeal to me. It might not be so bad if your Digimon didn't die after all that time and effort you invest in it. |

Breath of Fire GBA. I ended up literally unable to finish that game because it let me sell key pieces of equipment that were apparently necessary to complete the game. And it had like two music tracks. |

What were you selling that made it impossible to beat the game? IMO the biggest issue it had was that it gave you literally no hints about the existence of Agni/the Ultimate Power needed to get the best ending until you were supposed to use it. And the item that you were supposed to use to obtain the equipment that would allow you to get the dragon powers after the first set was unceremoniously hidden under a plain box in Tunlan for no plot reason. BoF had a decent amount of music, but the problem was that the cave and dungeon themes got played a lot. |

At least its translation is actually readable, unlike its sequel. Unbelievable that they didn't retranslate that game for the GBA port. |

It was dragon equipment. I was using a walkthrough IIRC so getting the item to obtain them wasn't a problem, but I guess I sold some pieces of it or something and since I needed it, I couldn't progress...? It was a long time ago (I got the game before even beating Golden Sun for the first time. I was taking a break because the Fusion Dragon was being a pain in the butt...) so I don't remember too well. EDIT: In hindsight, that probably was pretty dumb of me. I was fairly new to RPGs then with little exposure to them besides Pokémon, but the game probably should have ensured you couldn't mess up like that... made it unsellable or something. |

As far as we could tell, the plot is practically non-existent, the character dialogue is generally superficial (mostly to do with what to do next in the game), battles are basically an "autobattle" function with little input from the player, and as Silvy said, no matter what you do your character will just "die of old age" in a few days and then you have to go through the whole process of training, exploring, levelling up, etc again -- which really prevents any kind of attachment to your character, since they're changing constantly. Which works well as a sim thing, but for an RPG, not so much. And yes, I'm aware of porta-potties, but I remember them as being quite expensive -- and it was just a pointless thing to be worried about, you know? I'd rather just set off and go as far as I wanted in that playthrough and focus on exploration, but the game has a built-in mechanic to hamper that. And if you mess up, you get Numemon, which has the worst stats. Yaaaaaay. What did you like about it as an RPG, then? @Crash and Jackal Not really saying it's a bad game, just that as an RPG it's awful. |

Porta-potties were one of the cheapest items in the game actually, 300 Bits. As for battles, if the Brains stat is high enough you gain more options for how to direct them in battle; Digimon who specialize in Brains will get the stat high enough to be able to be told exactly which techniques you want them to attack with at any time. And even if the species doesn't specialize in Brains, an Ultimate level will still give a pretty good degree of control just because all its stats become so high. Oh, and the Numemon problem. Here's what I think happens with most people who screw up in this area. They spread their stats too thin. Which Digimon you get at digivolution is primarily based on what level your stats are at (e.g. If your Agumon has high Speed and Attack, it will become Meramon, if it has high Defense and HP, it will become Monochromon). A rookie mistake is to try to keep things generally equal. There are Digimon you can get for having generally high -everything-, but these are pretty tough to get early on, before the city has grown to give you ways to improve your training. Lots of care mistakes can lead to Numemon too, but the amount necessary is so high that you pretty much need to be trying to get it. If you train it hard enough Numemon can become Monzaemon, one of the best Ultimates in the game, but it requires constant training. But if you've got a Numemon, what else are you gonna do anyway? As an RPG, I like the constant sense of progression. As long as you are exploring the island regularly, the city will keep growing. Almost every new addition to the city will make it easier for you to have a powerful Digimon, whether it be a new way to make money, new kinds of items you can purchase, improvements to the training gym, or other unique services. When your Digimon passes away, a percentage of its stats are passed on to the baby. This percentage increases as you improve, meaning that your new Digimon will probably be a little bit stronger than your last one. As you raise different species and battle new species, your list of learned moves always increases, unless you treat your Digimon so horribly that it dies an unnatural death. You gain access to more and more of the island as you improve. If anything, I think your attachment to your Digimon should be even stronger after how hard you work for it to become so powerful, over multiple iterations. Unless you're re-naming it every time it dies which might play some mindgames on you, which I suppose it does give as an option, but I've never known someone to actually use that option except sparingly. And you should know already that plot is approximately dead last in my list of concerns for a game's level of quality, including RPGs. After all, Final Fantasy V is the best FF and people regularly say it's got no plot. |

You don't need the Dragon equipment to beat the game, but that's still rather stupid that the game would let you sell it, considering how important it is. o_O |

You're not alone. Aw man, I hated the little kid's voice so much. That wasn't the only thing I disliked, the graphics, while not terrible, were infused with so much gamma that it made my eyes literally hurt (same for Infinite Undiscovery.) |

If you've access to Toy Town you also get the ability to get a Monzaemon for basically free as long as the Toy Town sidequest isn't done, and maybe after that too. |

I think you can only use that once, period. Maybe not since you need a Monzaemon to get into that one building, but I've always just done it with that first free one. You can't use it after you clear that stuff though, I know for sure. |

You can use up until you do it, yeah, since you'd have to have a Monzaemon to get into Toy Town in the first place; if he fades away you can get another one from the same place. I know this because I used to be really bad at the game so I always had Numemon and then Monzaemon. |
