As i'm sure some of you know; I tried getting into rp-ing in the temple about a year ago or so. I learnt the hard way how NOT to RP Fortunately, insul stepped in and, for want of a better description, mentored me in RP-ing furthermore, I would also like to host an RP, but given my experience in RP-ing alone; it's unlikely this dream will ever surface What i propose is: some mentoring system that allows the inexperienced to learn from our more experienced RP-ers. This should also apply for hosts What do you think? (...chances are i'll be told that such a system already exists, but here goes...) |

Hmmm... I'm not sure if there would be enough demand for a formalized system, but I think a simple topic asking for someone to help you out, either in Battlefield or in the Discussion forum, could help matters. Kradenettes are pretty nice, and I imagine if you asked and they had the time, probably anyone would be a mentor. And you can always make a topic in discussion asking people to describe what, in their eyes, makes people a good RPer, or a good GM. =) There's definitely a space for RPs at Temple right now! |

What about the intermediate RP-ers? They are experienced, but arent noobs either.... who is going to mentor them!? They could possibly mentor themselves. Idk though. Seems a bit off. |

Honestly, most of what makes a good RPer is fairly simple. -Don't try to be the center of attention (unless it's an arc for your character). -Don't control anyone else (unless you've talked to them). -Be flexible with what's going on. From there, the rest is really just writing ability. Keeping characters in-character, providing realistic reactions, being creative. The benefit is that one doesn't need to be a great writer to be a great RPer (though it usually helps). Once you've gotten the hang of the things you shouldn't do, the rest is really just experience and practice. GMing, though, is a completely different beast. Maintaining player interest in the RP is the single most crucial skill, and yet also one of the most complicated. |

I think just RPing with other people, and asking people to provide criticism if they can, is a great way of mentoring -- and that way, you get lots of input. =) |

Hm. Maybe not a mentoring system, but with Belinsk proper coming up, maybe we could get some of our more prominent/devoted roleplayers to do a panel on the subject?

I'd be down. And if we do text-based, we can post the transcript to the topic. =) |

There are several people here who could benefit from something like a panel or something. Thus, it is a good idea. inb4somebodythinksI'moneofthosepeople |

A panel is a great idea. I think a voice chat would be great, if you can work out the logistics of it (also, I think, easier to control the discussion amongst panelists, rather than having a general chat with everyone), ideally with a transcription, but maybe I'm dreaming too big, lol. |

Yeah, transcription would be a nightmare... I think we tried recording one once, but there was a software problem and it ended up not saving. D: And I think some people might be more comfortable if it was typing... but, nonetheless, there will be lots of voice chat stuff during Belinsk. 8D Concerts and so on, and I see no reason why that can't include discussion as well. |

Sounds like an awesome idea! The idea of RPing can be pretty daunting, especially if everyone else is fairly experienced, so having some sort of panel on it (in whatever format it might be) would be really helpful for those who don't want to impose on an established RP while still trying to learn. Although just to be clear, the Temple has always encouraged new RPers to join in on proceedings. We were all new to it at one stage or another, and the other RPers are always helpful in regards to what you should and shouldn't be doing while you're in the RP environment. |

We could try to summarize the panel and put it in a sticky in the RP section. I think some tips and tricks would benefit a lot of people. |
