![]() Starbound is a new PC game set to come out this year. It is a spiritual successor to Terraria, with several similar gameplay concepts. The lead designer was also an artist on Terraria. In this game, instead of just a single earth to build and mine on, you'll have an entire universe of planets to explore. There is a heavy focus on procedural/random generation. Planets, monsters, weapons and more are procedurally generated. ![]() There are seven different races you can play as! Human, ape, bird, fish, plant, robot, and "neon gas-star thing" (dunno how to describe them really) races can be chosen. One way races affect gameplay is that you get access to different default sets of crafting/building recipes depending on which race you choose. You can find more recipes through exploring the universe or you could trade with someone of another race if you want an item they can make. space space space![]() big buffer space space space![]() A major emphasis is exploration and lore; you can examine creatures, objects, and environments to learn more about them and record your findings in a logbook which you can share with others. Much like worldgen seeds in Minecraft, every planet in Starbound will have a unique coordinate so if you find something especially cool you can share the coordinate so other players can see it too. The game doesn't have a release date yet, aside from "2013." The reason I'm making this thread so early is because they have opened up preorders on their website. They're doing it in a sort of "kickstarter style," where more preorders will mean new features can be added to the game since they'll be able to work full-time on development instead of part-time, or hire additional developers/artists to get work done faster. That seventh race, the Novakids, was the first result of this. You can find out a lot more about the game on the developer blog. They have an interactive development roadmap which lets you track what they are working on and what additional features are going into the game. And if you make an account on their forum, you can use this beta character creator application to create your own characters. (note: all the characters seen above, except for the Novakids, were made by me in the creator. ORIGINAL CHARACTERS DO NOT STEAL) huge screenshots

Hm, looks like they're adding lore and story and stuff like that. Combined with a Terraria-like game, that sounds really cool. I'll probably pre-order it before long.

I've been looking forward to this one for a while, but I got kinda worried when it seemingly went silent and all the console-exclusive terraria shit happened. This makes me satisfied in the plants. |

I don't see how the Terraria console stuff would have had anything to do with this, literally the only overlap is that one guy who did art on Terraria for a while is a designer for this game.

Oh, I thought there was more involvement, given that you said it was a spiritual successor... moar liek "inspired by," maybe? /pedantic But yeah, this looks quite good. |

Hmm, looking around online I guess most people do consider that term to imply that there is heavy overlap in the creators. I'd never thought of it that way; I had just considered any works that had a large overlap in unique, identifying elements to be spiritual successors. (To give an example, Final Fantasy Adventure/Mystic Quest GB/Seiken Densetsu 1 as a spiritual successor to the original Legend of Zelda.) I'd figured the reason that most spiritual successors in video games had heavy overlap in their authors compared to the original works was just because of the nature of the industry (heavy employee turnover, copyright law, IP holders, etc). But it looks like most people consider that overlap a defining feature! |

Quadpost The first stage of the beta for this game releases tomorrow. There are some people who already have access and some are streaming it. If you just search for Starbound on Twitch.tv you'll find some livestreams to watch if you want to see the game. |

Yep, I'm just going to see how far I can get by any possible means before it happens. Used the 3D printer glitch to get plat bars, for example, since they're wonky pre-level 40 planets. |

I finally found a home, and made a little plant-house for my plant-lady, hooray! But I am totally prepared to waste another two days post-update to do it all over again! |
