I haven't downloaded it yet (just been listening to some of the songs on youtube), but one thing that sticks out to me in a lot of these songs is that you seem to add sound for the sake of adding sound. What I mean is, "more sound" does not necessarily equate to "better sound." One of the synths you use fairly commonly just sounds completely overloaded, like it's a "wrong note" being played over and over. For example, your jupiter lighthouse remix sounds like you're overloading the synths up until around :37 or so, is fairly pleasant to listen to after that, and starts to get overloaded again around 1:45, becoming extremely overloaded at 1:57. 2:21 would be pretty cool, but the constant rough reverberating tone greatly distracts from it. The song keeps building after that, each time getting more and more rough/overloaded before you finally take it down a notch for the ambient section around 3:40. Here, it's quieter, but the "overloaded" sound is still notable for a while before you drop it out completely and start going into the experimental section. If I turn down the volume a bit, it becomes less noticeable, but I shouldn't have to turn down the volume to make a song sound better. Typically, I should have to turn up the volume to hear the little intricacies going on in the background. I mention this because it seems you've still got problems with that in your more recent work (i.e. the karagol sea remix). It's less pronounced there, either due to the shorter duration not giving it a chance to pop up as much, or due to you trying to not do it so much, but it's definitely still present. At first, I only especially noticed it around :14 and near the end, but listening more carefully, now I can hear it sprinkled throughout the first half. I'm not sure if you just need to mess with the EQ, but you should try working on making the synths sound less "hard." The reverberations really do reek of pushing the synths to make "too much" sound. It's possible that there are filters you could use to smooth it out, or possibly turning down the individual volumes of synths and raising the volume in post-processing, but I dunno if that would help any. |

I know the phenomenon you're talking about. Fact of the matter is that I'm an amateur using low-end software. Some of this is me being a chuckle[radio edit] and some of it is just bad voices on cheap software. I give many of my voices a basic low boost because without them, it sounds like the instruments are coming out of a tin can, which I can't stand. It's a choice of the lesser of two evils, from my standpoint. That said, I can see what I can do as I proceed with this latest mix in making it sound "cleaner." Also realize that I love rumbly woofer sounds; they have more overtones than tweeter sounds. It's the sort of thing you notice when you play low brass parts for 13+ years of your life. :I EDIT: thanks for the feedback, by the way. I do appreciate it hearing good constructive criticism. |
