1) Uh, nothing, Kain likenever posts on the forum, he's a lurker. 2) Point. Counter point is thus: There's also no reason not to change it. It's an entirely arbitrary stance either way, so it's always up for debate. 3) Satty, I didn't like how you just walked in and dismissed the idea. |

I didn't know we had to have 1000 posts to change user title at first, then somebody told me. As someone who will probably never get to that many posts without a little spam here and there, and while I'd like to be able to change it now... I don't really care about it. I don't think that not having a custom title should make me feel left out or anything. It IS just a small profile thing after all. |

If left blank, your default title currently will be: Phasmatis of Elementum

Same here. You got 1337 posts in that one day. Man those were the days. We should do it again, I know Draco loves those as much as you and me. |

Spam can be boring, but it can be fun if it's just a fast-paced, silly conversation between you and some friends! I think we'll do something different for this contest. ... Omg, I have the best idea, I just need to fine-tune it. To the staffmobilie!

I thought about this long enough in the shower to warrant a sharing of my feelings. What is the purpose of user titles? As they are now, they don't fulfill the function intended by Zetaboards, which has them set-up to distinguish users by their post count*. It's a system that is designed to reward users for visiting/contributing to a Zetaboards site and therefore increasing its traffic. Each post invites more posts, which increases the likelihood that someone will accidentally click an ad. All the while we're just fixated on trying to get that next title and getting the subsequent dopamine rush. This system is used in gaming a lot to keep players coming back. Does it work though? Ehhhhhh, not really. Not in this setting at least. Many people here have argued that post count isn't a valid way of measuring contribution to the forum because of spam, which is completely true**. Furthermore, with one or two exceptions, most people reported in this thread that they felt apathetic to their newfound ability to create their own username. Then there's the question of whether we should be rewarding people at all for something that is supposed to be fun and voluntary. Shouldn't the excitement of conversing with fellow Golden Sun fans be a reward in itself? I mean, functionally custom user titles don't serve a purpose that isn't already fulfilled by other profile fields, so they don't really have a reason to exist at all. But they aren't hurting anyone or cluttering up user profiles either. Occasionally they even make me chuckle. So, I'm in favor of getting rid of the 1000 post requirement for custom user titles/blurbs that go under your avatar because they don't actually work as a reward system and because intrinsic motivation > simple rewards. *Right now the real prize, custom user title, is awarded at 1000 posts. The original system would keep giving new achievements foreverrrr. So, in this way our reward system caps out at 1000 posts. **Unless we wanted to make it so that all posts in pointless gibberish don't contribute to post count. |

Incidentally, we tried this once, and Pointless Gibberish immediately became a ghost town. >_> I still think, even though it doesn't directly prove how much a member contributes, there's still something to be said for the dedication/activity that post counts show. So it's not that post counts lead to dedication, as in the dopamine model you outlined, but that dedication leads to post count -- theoretically. So sure, if someone wanted to skip straight to the bonus they could by spamming (and I'm intentionally framing it as bonus instead of reward), but the custom title is just to recognize something they already have. That being said, you bring up some good points. I'll append a poll to this topic so that we can have some quantifiable data. And thank you for bringing this discussion to a proper topic for it. >.> |
