Temple of Kraden News: Welcome to the Temple of Kraden! ------ All worshipers may enter the Most Holy Place in single file, reflecting on the bountiful blessing Kraden hath provided unto him or herself since their last visit. Head coverings are not necessary, as true penitence and humility are found within. The Priests and Priestesses of Kraden endeavor to remind all that fresh orange juice is heavily preferred; only whores use frozen.
Greetings, heathen. Perhaps some fortuitous blessing of Kraden's grace hath led you to our humble Temple, or perhaps you are simply curious about this strange and wonderful cult. Should you be willing - and dare to hope - to achieve enlightenment, the door opens before you. Lo! Leave your old life behind! For once you step through, you become something more than just yourself.

You become a Kradenette.

Are you willing to make the rapturous plunge? Do you have what it takes?

I don't know what people expect when it comes to stories in games.

"They're full of cliches."

Yeah, so? This is inevitable. Everything has been done at some point, in some form or another.

"They're not the main draw of the game."

And...this makes them bad/boring?

"They're generic."

As opposed to what?

This isn't directed at anyone in particular, I'm just addressing common complaints people have with video game stories.

Video games are my favorite medium of story-telling.

Movies: Only 2ish hours per movie

Books: No visual or audio

Manga: No motion or audio and usually no color

Games: Pretty much the best of all of them. TV shows/anime can rival this, but the games also have gameplay, so that edges it out.

Fiction in general is fine, you might be thinking of the fact that I don't like fantasy fiction or science fiction in literature, and though I like other kinds of fiction, I overall prefer nonfiction literature.

I've had the story in games discussion in multiple other topics so I'll just sum up my points here and be done with it, don't expect a response in this topic

The key distinction of a game is that it is interactive. If you are playing a game for its narrative, the least interactive part of the experience (with very very very few exceptions), you may as well look for fiction elsewhere instead, where you'll get a much better-written story and you won't have to go through the challenge or tedium (depending on the game) necessary to advance the plot in a game. I would also say that if this happens with a game, the creator/development team failed as game designers. The gameplay must not be very good.

It's okay to enjoy the story of a game, and for the story to add to the game's quality. A game's narrative can even be good. But if the reason you're playing a game for its story, save yourself some time and money and watch it on youtube instead, then go read a book afterward.

I considered watching Birth by Sleep on youtube one time. Just for the story, since I hate the PSP and I didn't own the game anyway. Watching the thing on Youtube robs all the life of it. It's an awful experience and if you like it you clearly need to be adjusted in the brain department*.

*Obviously I'm kidding. blah blah blah, opinions, blah blah inb4 somebody's feelings are hurt because I said your brain was broken.

True, I can see where you're coming from. However, playing through the game to experience the story makes it more immersive than simply watching. Kind of hard to explain but I'm sure some people understand what I mean. Basically it's the journey, not the destination.

Basically this for me I cannot enjoy a game by watching it. Going through the game expirencing the story first hand on a personal level is what I look for. Looking at someone else doing it just isn't the same as playing the game.

The opera scene in Final Fantasy VI is entirely unremarkable and is one of the most overrated moments in video gaming

well it's something that puts it above every other FF game at least

I agree that it's overrated, I wouldn't call it "entirely unremarkable". Plus, yeah, the opera music is really nice.

Agreed with Crash, it really is nothing special. Celes' opera song is really good though.

Would've been better if they hadn't made you input the lines, that kind of ruined the moment. Otherwise I think it's [radio edit]ing amazing.

I don't see how it ruins the moment. If you don't choose the line yourself in a few seconds, it picks whatever your cursor is on automatically, so it still flows perfectly.

What Storm said. It's not about timing; you don't interrupt cutscenes with a prompt asking you to remember the name of an important NPC, because it pointlessly detracts from the immersion. Same applies here.
