FFX definitely has the best gameplay by far, then possibly FFXII?
I couldn't really get into XII myself because the game was so easy. Granted, all Final Fantasy games are pretty easy, but the Gambit system just made XII easy to the point of being boring for me.

Not saying XII's combat system is bad, I just wish the game would have been harder to make it feel a little less boring.

Well, not everyone is equally good at games. I definitely had more trouble with FFXII than any other Final Fantasy, or pretty much any other RPG I've played. As in, actually got stuck on bosses.

That forest dragon............

That's true. It's one of the reasons why I wish they'd add difficulty settings to Final Fantasy games. That way everyone can be happy.

I really enjoyed FFXII, but I honestly reckon it required too much grinding. :| Or maybe I skipped way too many enemies on the field or something... The only reason I couldn't finish it was because of all the grinding.

But I agree that X had the best gameplay - all the turn mixing of the ATB system with all the thought process of the standard turn-based system. Plus, I loved the sphere-grid, actually meant you didn't have to use the standard "this is your mage. This is your warrior" people and could mix skillsets (particularly when you went the advanced grid in PAL) - my Kimahri had a piercing weapon and mug, it was fantastic.

imo, games shouldn't require grinding, but yeah FFXII was just... brutally hard.

And then there's that 50 million HP boss, which my friend's been stuck on for like a decade...

On the upside, that is an optional boss, and they do exist for people who want extra challenge, so it's not exactly an example of them making FFXII too hard... But yeah, definitely shouldn't have required grinding, but I had to do it every now and again. :|

At least chaining was kind of addictively fun.

I didn't really go after extra bosses in FFXII, but towards the end of the game I just got SO bored with the combat. That Gambit system just did all the work for me to the point where most of my intervention in the battles was obsolete. So I guess you could say they designed that particular function TOO well... to the point where it was less fun. I haven't played any FF past that.

Yiazmat was one of the reasons I wanted to play through XII. Unfortunately my PS2 died on me before I was able to defeat it. I was only able to get two or three attempts on it.

The hunt missions were actually one thing I really enjoyed about XII. Especially...

The difficulty in FF12 would largely depend on how many hunts you did, if you skipped through most of them like Satty probably did then the game would be considerably more difficult since lower leveled characters and such.

Forced side-questing isn't much better...

Well, I did hunts as I was going along instead of going out of my way to complete them and it wasn't too bad for me. I did end up having to grind a bunch for that dumb forest dragon boss by Fran's village though, it was awful.

I didn't actually fight it LOL. I read somewhere you could bypass it if you stuck yourself in fleeing and kept running to the next village. So I did that, instead.

Damn, I wish I knew about that when I was younger, the difficulty spike for that boss was ridiculous.

Yiazmat was fun. I think I beat him on one of my playthroughs.

You also had to take a different route with level 50 or so beasts, so most people only became aware of the path after they got past that boss and continued the game as per usual.
