Persona 4 is a great game though. The problem is that it's been milked so much to the point where people can't stand it anymore. As a standalone game it's pretty good. And I don't think FFXI was a typo considering many people consider FFIX the best. |

It's an issue of scope, yeah; that's the word I was looking for. You kind of need a budget to pull off scope. I think the main reason a lot of indie games are skewed toward gameplay innovation is because it's easier to be creative with gameplay than with storytelling. I think if you want to find unconventional approaches to narrative and characters in the indie scene, you might consider checking out some of the so-called "anti-games" that have been mentioned above, like Dear Esther, Gone Home, and Fibrillation. |

IIRC Stanley's Parable also does storytelling in a weird way. It was Ys 1, Kiki. I quickly acquired a burning hatred for the bump system, along with finding the first boss extremely dumb. |

Yeah, I think "anti-games" are really the appeal of indie games for me, because I understand that making games for art's sake as opposed to commercial viability can be difficult in the industry proper. Not that it doesn't happen, but just that it's easier to take a risk -- and if your risk is a premise that can be executed and resolved in a shorter space of time, that's better for costs as well. Like, Dear Esther sounds great and I'll probably check it out, but I wouldn't want to play 30 hours of it. |

Here we go... I otherwise never get into these kinds of discussions. As a female gamer I do not particularly care if female characters play damsel in distress roles. I am terrible, I know. I know Shantae and other female characters in that series are sexualized but that never bothered me. I guess because they are very empowering characters. |

Yeah the association of damsel in distress with weak characters and sexualization with objectification is something I see complained about a lot, and I've never really bought the connection. Like, it seems insulting to me to imply that just being captured at some point will instantly rob a female character of all her redeeming qualities regardless of how much agency she has throughout the rest of the game. And as for the sexualization thing, just look at Bayonetta: sexualized as hell, but also a strong example of an empowering figure that lots of female gamers respect. |

I too don't mind sexualization and damsels in and of themselves. Its fine to indulge in sexualization both as empowerment from the chick's POV and as enjoyment for ppl who dig chicks. And damsels can still be good characters. Weakness is allowed. So I try not to get worked up by individual examples. Princess Peach is great and nothing wrong with Bayonetta or even some boob cheerleader zombie girl sucking a phallic lollipop. My only beef I guess is that when you look at all of these examples collectively it paints a stifled portrait of female characters in gaming as a whole. Not enough variety. |

If you're wondering, I like the game for the following reasons: - Social links (they're generally better than P3's IMO) - Adachi - The soundtrack - The gameplay, partially because of how easy it is >.> - The characters |

Here's a bulleted list of why I don't like P4 with explanations without writing a novel. -Story is dumb (consists of you dicking around for months until the plot just falls in your lap. Tries to pass itself as a mystery but doesn't actually do anything that a mystery should do) -Social Links are dumb. It's ten, varying levels of you dicking around with characers until they eventually bleed their hearts out for you and then you just solve their problems with a line of dialog or two -The whole shadow thing is poorly done. Every single shadow encounter consists of the character's shadow telling everyone something they're ashamed of, them denying it, you fighting the shadow, and then all of a sudden they're fine with it....except not really because that's what their social link is for. -Personas are supposed to be "the facade that one wears to get through life's hardships" but everyone just gets handed theirs when their friends beat up their shadow for them -The combat (much like P3's) is just a watered down version of Nocturne's and DDS's. This, combined with the fact that the game is very easy, makes combat nothing except for "If you have high HP use your strongest attack, otherwise use mediarahan" -IT STILL USES THE [radio edit]ING NOCTURNE DEMON MODELS |
