I was waiting for Miral to discover this topic, was not disappointed. This is the kind of topic that starts wars. And idk, isn't "Golden Sun is mediocre" the popular gaming opinion? We're a fansite though, so I guess it might count as unpopular. It's true I can't really see beyond the nostalgia, but it's better than all the sprite Final Fantasies. Apologies if some of these are clones of Silvy's posts. - Skyrim is worse than King's Field (a 1995 PS1 RPG that was one of the first 3D adventure games), and is a generally awful game with cardboard characters, an elementary school kid's plot, and repetitive gameplay. - Echoing the "indie games are shit" comment. - Pursant to the above, I played Bastion for maybe 2-3 hours and there was almost nothing redeeming or significant about it. It was just generic in every respect. - Golden Sun is better than almost all the sprite-based Final Fantasies. - Golden Sun: Dark Dawn is a great game. - Video games have been improving in almost every respect over successive console generations. I'll try to think of more later. 8D |

Yeah sorry Shiny, I was going back and forth over that one. FFV might be as good, but it's a little more black-and-white than Golden Sun is and its themes are much less developed or complex. FFVI is the same but worse, pretty much. Of course, with its "elemental-themed dungeons" GS holds a huge debt to the early FF series anyway. :awsm: More because I never really played an indie game that could compare to a game with budget. Terraria was fun, but at the end of the day there's only so much to it. And it's not something fun by yourself for me. Indie visual novels can be pretty fantastic though, since you can produce something fantastic with a small team. Deal with it, Solbowz. 8D |

Have some more truth bombs: -Persona 3 and Persona 4 are blights on the franchise. (bet nobody saw this one coming) -Super Mario World and Mario Bros. 3 are both pretty mediocre. Galaxy, Galaxy 2, and 3D World offer the best Mario gameplay. -Almost every JRPG has an awful storyline. -Atelier is one of the best RPG series. As is Etrian Odyssey. -Chrono Trigger is an awful game. -Almost every game on the NES is pretty bad. -XI is the best (numbered) Final Fantasy. -Disgaea is pretty boring. -Fire Emblem Awakening sucks. -Tales of the Abyss and Tales of Vesperia are both awful games. Vesperia moreso, though. -Bravely Default is pretty average. |

At risk of sounding like I'm repeating the same tired adage, I think you just haven't played the right indie games. It's true there are a lot of them that are terrible, but if you go into it with the mindset of comparing them to AAA games, you're going to be disappointed. I'm of the opinion that indie titles tend to be good when they pick one thing to focus on, and do that well. An indie game simply won't be capable of delivering an epic, sweeping story with high-end graphics, good voice work and soundtrack, and robust mechanics because they don't have the budget for that. So if you want to find indie games that you might enjoy, pinpoint a particular aspect of gaming that you like and find well-regarded indie games that innovate on that. |

Oh, big exception! I guess Touhou is an absolutely amazing indie game, so there you go. Touhou is the best indie game. 8D Rofl, Miral. Keep it coming. And but seriously, most of the indie "games" I enjoy are the visual novels, which should tell you what I enjoy the most about games. 8D Maybe I'll give To the Moon a try. |

You might just prefer the AAA formula by nature, then. Exploring characterization and the like isn't really dependent on budget, so I think a lot of indie developers either avoid it as being "too easy" or take a more abstract approach. |

Well, what are some games that do characterization and story really well, then? Most indie games just lack the scope to do a really involved story, and a lot of them that I hear of/are recommended seem skewed towards platforming games or action-RPGs, which generally have mute protagonists. Reading about To the Moon, it definitely does look quite interesting. Though I'm not a puzzle fan (as much as I enjoy Limbo's unique atmosphere and aesthetic, for example, it gets old and is sometimes just needlessly frustrating), it at least looks good. So, what are some other games that you feel convey a strong narrative and characters? |

D&D 4e is better than 3.5. I like how each class fills a certain role in combat, and that the players have the freedom to build and extend their characters to be able to preform other roles as well. It's also a lot more player friendly than 3.5, what with a better sense of balance across classes, a better conveyance of what each class and role does, and the ability to retrain abilities that don't seem to work for some reason. Because sometimes, your dice just really, really hate a certain skill. |

Well, she hit the nail on the head with Persona 4 and NES games. I think that FFXI was a typo anyways, must have meant FFIX.
Yes, AAA titles a shit. It really just depends on the style and scope of the game, some need a high budget to realize their potential, some really don't. Either way you can have great gameplay and/or a great story without having a high-budget, graphically impressive game. Let's not forget the horde of high budget titles that tend to be lacking in the story department, since it's somewhat of a more challenging thing to advertise in a game and many people aren't concerned with whether the story in a game is good or not in the first place. Selling a game on "it has a good story" isn't nearly as easy as showing that it looks like it has fun gameplay, since you have to invest hours in a game to get a feel for whether you like the story in the first place, whereas a simple trailer or demo can give you a feel for the gameplay. |

Don't worry about To the Moon's puzzles. If you can solve one face of a Rubik's cube, you can probably solve To The Moon's puzzles. And now I'm just puzzled as to what Miral actually likes. Now I'm just waiting for her to proclaim that she's a huge CoD fan and that her favorite game is some Star Wars game. |
