Even if while writing the story you start to move in another direction for a while, you had better always have some kind of ending in mind. Otherwise we often end up with a piece that's disjointed and has no clear theme, with unresolved/contradictory plot points, etc.

Granted, that sometimes works out, and generally isn't much worse than the author that has a long, complicated storyline that they give up on halfway through, leaving a lot of questions unanswered. But yes, I agree, it generally works out best if the author has a story in mind, and an end point, and works towards it.

So in another ten years or so? Also, for one that updates regularly, and probably isn't going to end anytime soon, Schlock Mercenary. It (as far as I know) doesnt' have a definite end, but it's consistent about being good, and it has Footnotes!
