Anime Heros

Death comes to all of those who oppose me.

I have serious issue with some anime heroes. Any hero that goes i'm so under-powered, but by the power of caring I will shoot up in strength for no reason and win. Ichigo, Naruto, and Natsu seem to suffer from this. With Natsu being the least of all so far. (Well see in the next few episodes if they decided to give him it in a situation that he clearly should lose.). I'm okay with the good guys ending out on top due to outsmarting their opponent, or getting lucky. It seems to be becoming more popular to just give people 100000000000 power for no reason. DBZ I found okay for a while for example Goku doesn't get to go super sayian until Krillin dies. Does anyone else have a problem with this kind of anime hero?

Don't forget Flame of Recca, the third of the only three shounen series I actually like. 8D Although in all those cases it's the female characters who don't depend on hotbloodedness whom I like the most.

"HAHA, LOOK AT HOW SMALL IT IS."

Shounen manga can be good when done right, imo.

As long as the heroes aren't falling over near death and then next panel they're suddenly okay and proclaiming that believing in the heart of the cards brought them back.

In the case of Naruto, he actually gets stronger from training, as it should be. I admit though, he's been getting quite overpowered with his SSJ-like powerup.

Oh god yes...I hate that kind [ESPECIALLY Ichigo].
Natsu is better in the manga, and he got curb-stomped in the latest arc.

On that note, I really can't think of many anime where characters get literally powered up by sheer willpower. There's quite a bit of difference between "their hot blood makes them go SS-9001" and "they get the resolution to achieve victory through willpower."

The former can get kind of stupid if not explained correctly, but the latter is one of my absolute favorite concepts ever.

Wut....
It's awful...
Unless it's used by Jack Rakan [he has willpower as an actual power[as well as awesomeness [again, an actual power]]

Oh man, then you would have major problems with how the characters in Gurren Lagann power up, then. The series is entirely wrapped around the "what-ifs" of having willpower as a viable energy source. D:

Of course, not all shounen series follow the OVER 9000 rule, since it's usually the ones that worldbuild that are prone to doing that. Even then, Naruto and Bleach don't really use the "I can raise by battle levels by screaming a lot" quite that often. More often they use a device called the "training phase" to explain why they get so powerful. Almost every Shounen series makes use of this "training phase" to keep their stories interesting.

<3 mecha

But Spiral Energy is just a ripoff of G-Stones. Which are just a ripoff of Getter Rays.

True...I never realised that before.
The only ones that don't are Nanoha where they are all uber-strong to start with, and Negima where his solution is *training would take too long. Dark magic is quicker and easier."

I can actually live with characters getting powerups out of nowhere when it's explicitly stated that in their universe, hot-bloodedness and ferocity give you power. It's a bit harder to swallow when it happens to characters who rant about revenge in a setting where one family has eye magic that comes from hating each other really hard and can be transplanted by ripping out your own eyes and replacing them with somebody else's.
